Tall buildings tend to sway in quakes, so it likely didn't feel the same as on the ground. And the ground there is soft, as someone posted. Add that the Monument was not designed for earthquake regions, it'd be scary enough.

And I still hope to spend a week or more in DC. Hubby and I could spend that time on the Mall alone, I think.

Sometimes tall buildings sway even when there is no quake at all. You go up in the St. Louis Arch and you can literally feel it move. Even when the surrounding area is completely still.

Here in California the taller buildings are built on rollers to accommodate for earthquakes... but even then, on particularly windy days, the skyscrapers here do sway - it can be really freaky.
