This should be interesting (the Washington Monument)

Willis (née Sears) Towers

Cute, I didn't realise some insurance wankers had purchased the right to rename the building. Damned if I'll ever call it that, though.

That view is nice; still not interested in visiting D.C. though.
While I wouldn't plan a trip from Scotland to go to DC, if you're ever in the neighborhood I would suggest giving it a shot. It's a wonderful place to visit provided you stay in the tourist areas.

No, rolling hills around here. Lot of the land around the national monument was originally a swamp or entirely underwater.

I still find it hard to believe the view is as impressive as that from the top of the Sears Tower or the CN Tower.

I've been in all three, and while it doesn't have the same "holy shit this is high" effect as the CN or Willis (née Sears) Towers, it does offer a beautiful view of the city and its environs.

I've lived in the D.C. area for 17 years now, and I still haven't gone to the Washington Monument, just admired it from a distance. I hope someday it will be re-opened...

^Well, like the MetLife Building in New York- a lot of people still call it the Pan Am building (I actually do). And Pan Am not only moved out ages ago, they went out of business!

I still call it Sears Tower. :p

D.C. is a great city to visit. Virtually everything on the Mall is free. The National Archives is great. The National Gallery is huge. The various Smithsonian museums are worth a trip all by themselves.

I lived in the SF Bay Area for most of my life and in SFC proper for four years and never went to the Coit Tower, it happens. I did visit the Sears and Hancock buildings multiple times when I was living in my hometown and when I lived in Stirling I climbed the Wallace Monument multiple times.

I think the difference was that San Francisco is already quite hilly so there's loads of places to get a view - the base of the Sutro Tower is a great spot.

The naming rights?

You do know that Sears moved out, right? Like, 15 years ago. You make "naming it after who's in it" sound so sinister.

It's not sinister, it's lame. Willis is only leasing the place; the building was built by Sears Roebuck so it's the Sears Tower whether they're living there or not. If they wanted to rename it The Great Chicago Phallus, that I could go with, but Willis Tower doesn't impress.

The Smithsonian is probably worth it alone, I'll agree. Okay, it's on the list.

There are other nice places to visit outside of downtown too. You're restricting yourself based off of 20 year old information.

often, best places to see, shop and eat are outside the tourist areas. This applies to other cities.

I was in DC a few years ago for some Nats games - unfortunately did not have time to do a proper tour of the Mall and areas like that. Would like to remedy this soon. (Hopefully there will not be a ginormous heat wave like last time.)

I'm aware however leaving tourist areas if you aren't familiar with the place brings about a host of other issues; notably walking into a shitty neighborhood or getting lost. This applies to just about all cities as well.

Shame. Having grown up in DC, I always undervalued the local museums, memorials and monuments. It wasn't till I moved 3000 miles away that I realized how cool all that was and I miss having it just a subway stop away from me tremendously. No, the view from the top of the Washington Monument isn't really different from other high-rises in the area, and unless you're familiar with the geography of the area, it probably won't mean anything to you. But it was still cool to do and see when I went up there as a kid, and I'd feel terrible if they have to close the Monument for good, knowing other little kids wouldn't have the same experience.

To each their own though.

Nats park is already in one of the shittier neighborhoods.
