This Is Us - It's ok to admit that you watch it

My wife watched the first six or seven episodes of season 1 before I gave it a shot, and it's a really good show. Good writing, time jumps, and some top-notch acting; Sterling K. Brown, Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore are really excellent.

Most guys I know won't admit to watching it, but I know a lot of us do.

The only problem I have with it is the character Toby. He played Taser Face in Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2, and now I can't see him without thinking of Taser Face.

So come on, it's ok to admit that you watch it.

I only watched the pilot.

My reaction was mostly that it was extremely saccharine.

The show just didn’t jive with me. The scene where the actor stormed off the stage when they wouldn’t let the sitcom be dark reminded me of the kind of writerly self indulgence as the similar scene in the Studio 60 pilot. Then the rest of it seemed to be stuck in the ‘constant gushingly sentimental emotional revelations’ gear.

My impression of the show based on the pilot and ads is it’s a high budget soap. I could be convinced to give another chance. And just hope it doesn’t give me diabetes.

I agree with both of you. It's way too sentimental most of the time, but I still enjoy it. The acting is great and I am invested in the characters, even if the dialogue makes me roll my eyes sometimes. It's one of those weird shows that tries to claim, "see, we're about normal everyday people just like you," yet many of the situations and conversations between characters would never happen in real life. But, I still watch to see what will happen.

So that's who Sterling K. Brown is. I was wondering who the hell that was in that West Wing thread a little while ago. I don't watch it either.

My wife watches it religiously on Hulu, so of course it's in the background and I catch bits and pieces. Best I can sum it up is that it's so indulgent in misery porn that it makes Parenthood look like a Saturday morning cartoon.

I'll admit to watching it. It's not the best show on television, but it's alright. It has some really strong pieces and some really weak pieces, just like any other show.

it makes Parenthood look like a Saturday morning cartoon

It does remind me of Parenthood quite a bit. I even remember thinking when I saw the first preview for it, "oh, so this is the Parenthood replacement."

Misery porn is also a good way of putting it. I thought about that while watching last night's episode. They've been hyping it for a while, the one you "don't want to miss." Not because of some happy surprise ending or exciting reveal, but to watch a dude die and see how sad it makes everyone. It did strike me as odd. And yet I watched.
