Think Back: What was that ONE episode that hooked you?

I gave DS9 a shot in early 1993
I watched from Emissary to The Storyteller and stopped.

Boring Bajoran plots
Little too much of TNG's plot themes (IMO) for my taste
No starship

10 years into the future-2003

I'm get in late, scan through the channels and there is huge space battle. I check to see the show and its DS9. I'm shocked! I decided I'd give it a 2nd chance and haven't looked back.
That show that won me back was Sacrifice of Angels

I didn't see DS9 in first-run till mid-S6...fortunately UPN was also loading up on the reruns so I caught up pretty quickly...the first episode I ever saw was You are Cordially Invited (just missing the Occupation Arc!) and I loved it - grumpy ole Worf is getting married, suddenly he's palling around with people who seem a LOT more fun than those stiff shirts on the Enterprise. I thought it was great.

I was also hooked from "Emissary." Today, I think it's a pretty good pilot, but back in January of 93, man I was impressed. From there, my favorite series would alternate between TNG and DS9 (depending on what day you asked me).

I watched DSN from the beginning, and liked Emissary very much. The first season was hit or miss, though, as I found the "intrigue" on Bajor rather boring. The first non-Bajor ep I really enjoyed was Captive Pursuit, which was the first contact with Tosk and others from the Gamma Quadrant. That ep re-hooked me. That's when I knew exploring the Gamma Quadrant should be the direction the show went with, and it finally did, successfully, with the Dominion. -- RR

The first episode of DS9 I ever watched was For The Uniform.

For a first timer, it was a rather confusing episode to stumble upon. But it hooked me. There was a darkness to it that I hadn't seen before in Trek.

Though I didn't get consistent with my DS9 watching until A Call to Arms.

I tuned out DS9 after Emissary as a kid during it's original airdate. Was bored to tears by Emissary. Always loved TOS ,and hated TNG ever since I first watched TNG, and then I hated DS9 as much as I hated TNG after Emissary.

Only rediscovered DS9 and noticed it was a good show in reruns on TV around year 1999. The episode that comes to mind is "Covenant". I was intrigued that something so interesting was happening on a TV show and was fascinated by Alaimo's acting. I rarely watch TV since it's almost all drivel IMO. After seeing the rerun of Covenant I kept watching more and more of DS9 and remained intrigued until eventually I realized DS9 is easily one of the very best shows ever made, and the best SciFi show ever made IMO.

I was just a little kid when "Emissary" premiered. For some reason I was super hyped about seeing it (and I was the same way when "All Good Things" aired) even though I never watched Star Trek. Star Trek was kind of that pretty cool show I never bothered watching. I have no idea why. I caught the occasional episode until I watched "Way of the Warrior" when it first aired and then I was hooked on Deep Space Nine until the end.

First episode I saw was Emissary, but it didn't really get my interest. Didn't see another episode until Way of the Warrior in like 1996 or 97 when it screened on free-to-air in Australia. Caught purely by accident, channel surfing late at night and stumbled on it. If I hadn't seen Worf I might not have bothered. Thought it was a cool episode but didn't get into it. Around 2 years later In the Cards/Call to Arms appears at my local video store and it had a very close looking cover so I got it out. After that I started renting out each new video as they came out. Unfortunately my video store only had like 4 earlier videos and while I caught a fair bit of season 4 and 5 on TV I didn't see much of the first 3 seasons until I got the DVDs a couple of years ago.

I really followed DS9 when I was watching in on the DVDs. I didn't remember much of it via first run, even though I really loved "Past Tense" as the episode that hooked me. Via DVD, it was definately In Purgatory's Shadow. All those twists and revelations and all of it made sense. It was an incredible 45 minutes of storytelling.

I watched DSN from the beginning, and liked Emissary very much. The first season was hit or miss, though, as I found the "intrigue" on Bajor rather boring.

Trust me: watch that Bajor intrigue again with the Iraq situation in mind--regardless of your political views--and you're going to see it in a whole different light.

The Visitor. This episode demonstrated that DS9 was much more than a cool sci-fi show; it could also deliver a huge emotional payoff in a father-son relationship.

Totally agree

It's really hard for me to say. I was a huge TNG fan at the time and loved Trek in general. So I was going to give DS9 a huge change anyway. And, after all, I had nothing to lose since TNG was going to be on the air for a few more years anyway. So why not have two Treks instead of just one?

I thought Emissary was a solid start. And although S1 as a whole was pretty rocky, I enjoyed DS9. It couldn't touch TNG at that point but there was no reason for me to stop watching.
Come season 2 I felt the show had grown stronger, and I myself became more attracted to the Bajoran storyline. TNG was still in the lead but DS9 was doing some catching up.
Obviously, at this point VOY was already in development. I was extremely excited about ANOTHER Trek show, and for a while this was what I was looking forward to most. Interestingly, sometime before DS9 S3 and VOY S1 aired, I noticed that I had actually grown more excited about a new season of DS9 rather than the launch of VOY (is that prophetic, or what?).
Anyway, I remember being really impressed by the Defiant. I'd never seen anything like it on Trek. And the huge fleet assembled by the Romulans and Cardassians was also like new territory in addition to the things that already set the show apart.
By S3, I admitted to myself (quietly) that I actually liked DS9 just as much as TNG. Not that I'd have ever stated that in public :D.
I think the point where DS9 really, REALLY got me was The Visitor. I think no TV show had ever touched me quite as much as that one episode did. I found it absolutely amazing. I also realized that it could have only come from the building of characters that DS9 had done so well over the years.
With S4, DS9 just skyrocketed IMHO and left TNG in a plume of dust. I was totally hooked, and couldn't wait to see what would come next. The show was darker, more complex, more serious, yet also more fun on a certain level. And it was a lot harder to guess what would happen as events with the Dominion, the Klingons, the Cardassians, and the Rolumans unfolded.
The rest is history, so to speak. When I went to rewatch DS9, the one thing that struck me most is how excellent Emissary was. This is IMHO easily and by far the best pilot a Trek show has ever done - period. It's complex, engaging, moving, and it does a terrific job of introducing the show and its characters. Honestly, if I had to rate it on a scale of 1 - 10 for the entire series, I'd give it a 10 without even flinching. And interestingly, as I grow older I find that particular episode only becomes more appealing and relevant.

The only other show to ever truly challenge DS9's position as my favorite show (and I think it's probably succeeded) is nuBSG. But I still hold DS9 in very high esteem. It remains one of my favorite three shows (nuBSG, DS9, B5).

I was 10 years old when DS9 debuted, I was already a huge fan of TNG so a new Star Trek series was pretty exciting. Alas, my 10 year old mind was not really understanding or appreciating DS9 and I gave up after several episodes.

Flashforward several years and I learn that WORF was going to be joining the cast of DS9. So I decided to check out Way of the Warrior when it orginally aired and was hooked and never missed and episode until the series finale. Way of the Warrior is still one of my all time favorite episodes.

It wasn't until the DVDs that I was able to go back and watch the earlier episodes. DS9 is now without question my favorite Trek series...It just took me awhile to grow into, haha.

After Emissary, which I loved overall, I'd say Necessary Evil, or, The Wire were the first episodes that gave me a hope of a promising series.

I watched Emissary when it aired but it was Past Prologue that. I like that the issues weren't clear cut and the Kira vs Sisko stuff.

I was a fan after Emissary however being an eight year old kid at the time I didn't grasp the concept of timeslots and seasons until season 1 of VOY and season 3 of DS9. I think I got truly sold when I learned of the warship Defiant during the episode Meridian.
