Things you HATED about this show. As much as there are positives about STD there is much CRINGE!

2. I'm confused. Captains exist to punch villains and wrestle dinosaurs. Security officers exist to die horribly as a demonstration of the villain's power.
Couldn't resist:

Hate is such a strong word. The only thing I really don't like about Discovery currently is Burnham/Spock Family connection. That doesn't really gel well with me at all.

Some of the decisions characters made in the first and second episodes had me go Wha...? but otherwise we've moved past that.

The last thing is a very nitpicky thing on but It's just my own personal opinion. I wish the uniforms were more TOS esque instead of Enterprise esque. It's not a big deal and I do like the Discovery uniforms but I just love the Gold, Blue and Red color coding and I miss that. Like I said, Not a big thing but I do hope Discovery leans closer to that in the future.

That being said, I'm liking Discovery, It's nice to be back in my favorite era of Trek.

wait, what

D&D was "satanic" and people round here took that seriously . This was pre-internet and at the end of the Satan scare era.We played here and at another guys house as he had this nice big attic with lots of space and a big window we could open and his parents "seemed" fine. But one day they bust in, mind game with 8 or 10 church people, big guys and some ladies. They force us down and try to anoint us with oil , on our foreheads and the preacher is waving his bible around and denouncing Satan and guys are tossing our stuff in bags and women are chanting in tongues and it was scary as all hell.

Being bigger guys, me and Doug put the guys holding us into the wall, and it broke down into a grand fist fight and the ladies screamed and we ran. Left our stuff, which we learned got burned. The guy who lived there got sent to a "camp" to cure him of his satanic influence. Never saw him in school after that. Last I saw the guy he was a rabid atheist with a hate for all things christian and had not spoken with his family in a decade.

Hands down one of the scariest events in my life.

To me it sounds like you're describing events that took place about 900 years ago while a redhead was being burned at the stake in a neighboring hamlet.

Was only a bit over 20. Stuff like that STILL happens. I have had issues at work over not being christian and was once beat over it. Parts of the US are still pretty backward man.

That's pretty shocking, honestly. I guess I just assume that it's pretty much the same everywhere these days. I can't even imagine this happening in the 19th century where I live, let alone 20 years ago.

Yep, not even 10 I got harassed at work and reported to HR over a necklace. It only stopped after the magic words "Law suit" came up. The bible belt can be a scary and highly intolerant place. My daughter has a friend, who is gay. And they force her to read the anti-gay parts of the bible every day and sent her to one of those anti-gay camps and all that stuff. Shes no longer even allowed to hang out or talk to girls. Trust me, things have not changed all that much.

I hate the fact the Klingons are solely responsible for the war and seem to be set up as Orcs versus more sympathetic characters.

I bet the Klingons are going to turn out to be the good guys. Lorca(I mean...Captain Lorca) is clearly villainous, and Burnam will probably turn out to be one of those morally grey characters that modern audiences are so fond of.

I'm still predicting the War on Terror angle.

ISIS is bad but the drone strike/CIA/assassination happy Section 31 is also bad.

Which oddly means it's just DS9 again.

Which isn't a bad thing.

Well yeah, Klingons fight. They all have their own reasons for doing that and it was a single klingon that set it up. Pretty sure he did not explain the details to the others, just "Look here they are lying at our border, near our sacred relic with a fleet!"

I have an idea, how about "Isis is bad, but being armed/trained by the CIA/et al."

That could make for an interesting story. ...Tkuvma is a Federation asset.

Then in the end, Burnham might sacrifice herself, and there are no good guys.

It isn't "bad" per se, but it's certainly unoriginal.

*Like everything else about the show, it's low-hanging fruit. Discovery is basket full of mangled apples.

I'm going to pipe in and say I generally have a lot more affection for the redheaded stepchildren of the franchise than most. I think THE FINAL FRONTIER could have been a really good movie with just a few changes and a bigger focus on Spock versus his brother (or just making him a crazy evil cult leader).

Which leads to my point I actually like INTO DARKNESS' original plot as you can tell this movie was made with a very specific "9/11 was an inside job" conspiracy story before Khan was shoe-horned in at the last second because executives wanted him.

I really like Admiral Marcus wanting a war with the Klingons to defeat them before they become a threat and think there's a lot of they could have done with that story--sadly, we didn't get to see it because of the badly done third act. Then again, my favorite Star Trek villains were Chang and Cartwright.

Don't read about Appalachia, then. My grandmother was a Baptist missionary to a secluded area in that region because they are so isolated.

Unfortunately, it gives Christians a very bad rap, and it frustrates me to no end.

Technically, I live in Appalachia

I never, for a moment, believed this was a professional and competent crew of a starship. Or even a houseboat.
From the very first scene, where the 1st Officer is telling her Captain why they're on this hostile world ONLY AFTER THEY'VE BEAMED DOWN! Really?

Then there's the stupid little lazy bits that show a scriptwriter doesn't care about consistency or verisimilitude -- everything is on by the seat of pant:

Like when Michael tells her Captain, down to the second, when the storm will be upon them. And then it's there immediately. Significant digits, anyone?

Or the Captain, making an Trek Delta as a signal... so the Shenzhou can see the ground just fine optically, but subspace doesn't work, and neither the Captain nor Number One have any kind of optical beacon (which they have in TOS, by the way).

Or Mr. Suru, who looks super alien and acts completely human. Why make a crewperson alien if they're going to be human?

Or that stupid, stupid scene where Michael bumps Mr. Suru aside to give the Captain data on the Klingon ship because this freaking Lt. Commander science officer is just too dumb to get the info.

Or the optical scanners of the ship don't work, but a three inch refractor does.

Or Michael, after being radiation-singed, getting up from sick bay to talk to her Captain on the bridge... I do believe they have intercoms in the future. Even holo-ones.

Speaking of which, how about that Holo-Skype that works without time delay across dozens of light years?

And, of course, old chestnuts like ships having to be about five feet from each other to do combat. No, it wasn't like that in TOS. Yes, it's been like that since Star Trek II. Yes, it was stupid then.

Lazy, lazy.

(for those who will say, "It's sci-fi! Don't nitpick!" I'm not asking for my reality, but I am asking for a consistent, plausible reality.)
