Couldn't resist:2. I'm confused. Captains exist to punch villains and wrestle dinosaurs. Security officers exist to die horribly as a demonstration of the villain's power.

Because they are in spaceships...
And fire in Spaceships is bad, as they pointed out in The Next Generation.
Dude its a whole other world when evangelical parents and people from their church bust in, hold you down, splash anointing oil on and and preach and speak in tongues while you try to get up. The burning of the books also did not endear me.
Not really, fire was show to be a big no no even in TNG.This is sci-fi. In the future. They can do whatever they want.
wait, what
D&D was "satanic" and people round here took that seriously . This was pre-internet and at the end of the Satan scare era.We played here and at another guys house as he had this nice big attic with lots of space and a big window we could open and his parents "seemed" fine. But one day they bust in, mind game with 8 or 10 church people, big guys and some ladies. They force us down and try to anoint us with oil , on our foreheads and the preacher is waving his bible around and denouncing Satan and guys are tossing our stuff in bags and women are chanting in tongues and it was scary as all hell.
Being bigger guys, me and Doug put the guys holding us into the wall, and it broke down into a grand fist fight and the ladies screamed and we ran. Left our stuff, which we learned got burned. The guy who lived there got sent to a "camp" to cure him of his satanic influence. Never saw him in school after that. Last I saw the guy he was a rabid atheist with a hate for all things christian and had not spoken with his family in a decade.
Hands down one of the scariest events in my life.
To me it sounds like you're describing events that took place about 900 years ago while a redhead was being burned at the stake in a neighboring hamlet.
Was only a bit over 20. Stuff like that STILL happens. I have had issues at work over not being christian and was once beat over it. Parts of the US are still pretty backward man.
That's pretty shocking, honestly. I guess I just assume that it's pretty much the same everywhere these days. I can't even imagine this happening in the 19th century where I live, let alone 20 years ago.
I bet the Klingons are going to turn out to be the good guys. Lorca(I mean...Captain Lorca) is clearly villainous, and Burnam will probably turn out to be one of those morally grey characters that modern audiences are so fond of.
I hate the fact the Klingons are solely responsible for the war and seem to be set up as Orcs versus more sympathetic characters.
I have an idea, how about "Isis is bad, but being armed/trained by the CIA/et al."I'm still predicting the War on Terror angle.
ISIS is bad but the drone strike/CIA/assassination happy Section 31 is also bad.
Which oddly means it's just DS9 again.
Which isn't a bad thing.
It isn't "bad" per se, but it's certainly unoriginal.
*Like everything else about the show, it's low-hanging fruit. Discovery is basket full of mangled apples.
Don't read about Appalachia, then. My grandmother was a Baptist missionary to a secluded area in that region because they are so isolated. That's pretty shocking, honestly. Unfortunately, it gives Christians a very bad rap, and it frustrates me to no end.
