While discussing the orbs with my wife, it hit me... the orbs themselves, not the containers that house them, are shaped like an hourglass. I find this ironic, given that the prophets exist outside of linear time.
I would guess the most likely reason is that the script was written before TPTB had a clear sense of how the orbs were going to appear, but in-universe, don't religious artifacts not-infrequently have names that are somewhat more metaphorical than literal? Orb of the Prophets does sound better than Hourglass of the Prophets, or Egg Timer of the Prophets. 
^To this day I still wonder who first decided to call an hourglass shaped item an orb.

Or a mistranslation of the Bajoran term for the holy object connected to the wormhole.
^I like that idea. Alternately (or maybe not, depending on how you look at it), maybe in the Bajoran language the word "orb" has multiple meanings in any case.
Of course, they're also called the Tears of the Prophets, and we could argue that they don't look like tears either...or do they? Maybe "orb" is a colloquialism while "tear" is the more formal term.

OMG, I haven't heard that song since it was popular. Pretty mind-blowing. Fun video.
So, I was curious and the origin of "orb" in English is Latin for "ring" which the Orb does have, one at the top, and one at the bottom, encircling the center piller.
And, as dumb as it sounds, I just realized that the Orb looks like the freaking wormhole. Damn this week sucks. Can't believe I missed that.
I saw DS9 in original run, but I was in Jr High/High School. I always thought Into The Pale Moonlight was just awesome how Garek just manipulates things to get to the conclusion.
As an adult I have rewatched it, I realize I was wrong then. Garek, already had the rod. Getting the gel to make the bomb was always the plan. And well the forger and senator were never leaving alive either way. That was always the plan. I feel kind of dumb saying all this but 16 year old me just didn’t see it

As was Star Trek Into Darkness (the 9/11 part and the whole terrorism/drone weapon usage part.)
Everything we need to create a "1984" surveillance state is in place: drones, cameras, facial recognition, tracking cars and phones, monitoring internet activity, satellites that can spot you from orbit. And given how scared people were when 9/11 (3000 dead) happened, can you imagine their fear if a nuclear or biological attack killed 100 times that many? They would be perfectly happy to invite Big Brother into their lives.
We're practically there already.
The pieces are positioned, but we're nowhere near there. If we were, saying anything bad about the government would be a punishable offense. As would any post like "how to make napalm" or "how to 3-d print a gun". And if I posted something like...
Q: "What's the best thing about being Joe Biden?"
A: "You can hide your own Easter eggs."
That would get me either taken to a reeducation camp... or worse.
But one of the big elements of 1984, the control of information to the masses and curtailing critical thinking in schools, is already here. News outlets and channels that both sides (Republicans and Democrats) control skew news from each of their parties to keep culture wars going and make each side more hostile toward the other.
One of two scenarios is a likely outcome with things the way they are going... either a 1984-like outcome or a form of Corporate Congress from CONTINUUM. (In that future, governments and countries were quite literally ruled by corporations.)
Neither outcome is very reassuring.
Money talks. And since corporations have a lot of money, they talk loud.
