Things that frustrate us all

Wal-Mart, or as they now spell it on buildings, WalMart (or Wal*Mart), is a little less caring about bad costumers.

I see rude, disrespectful ones (like kids and teens, even sometiems young adults, riding the carts for the disabled for fun) and poorly dressed ones to just shop. Hell, a few eyars ago they announced they would no longer prosecute shoplifters younger and 18, older than 65, and stole $25 or less. But damn you if you try to walk out the doors and the mechandise security tag sets the alarms off -- they'll follow you out the door.

They're not supposed to do that, are they?

I know that at my store we're not allowed to stop people if the alarm goes off. Which makes me wonder why we even HAVE the damn thing. :scream:

At malls, I've seen plain-clothes loss prevention staff chase down and tackle shoplifters in the parking lot, or corner them in the lobby area between the interior and exterior doorways.

Is it just in my country or is there a general increase in shoplifters older than 70?
Also, I see more and more old people collecting bottles (you get a refund at shops for every empty bottle) to improve their meagre pensions. Many do it at first light so that nobody sees them. It's pretty terrible to see such things in one of the world's richest countries :(

I am... very angry. :censored: :brickwall:  :scream:

I can't even use Photobucket right now. Whoever updated it has NOW made it completely unusable. Gigantic, obnoxious ads. Pictures that scroll slow. Ugh. I was planning on upgrading, but with the way it is now, I've been put off by it.

Congratulations guys! You've possibly lost a future customer by trying to force people to upgrade! Idiots.

It's propably a small comfort to you, but due to a minor virus infection the Bavarian government is atm blocking all sorts of external internet sources. I can't even access my own domain from my office, let alone webmail, news sites or any message board but TrekBBS (and it's just a matter of time till they block itthis one as well). It's utterly frustrating

Odd. I came here to complain about YouTube for similar reasons.

People who have prestigious jobs who look down on others, who don't. Each one of us has our own set of skills and desires and talents. This society doesn't run without men (and women) in reflective vests. Someone needs to pave our roads, drive a truck with a trailer full of goods, to market. Someone has to make our pizza, so we can have the experience of having that meal out to celebrate a birthday or an accomplishment. We are assigning value to the lawyer and the doctor, but there is value in a mechanic and someone who puts the dream of an architect, into the reality of existence. We need a plumber because I need my toilet and sink, to run. We need builders because without them, I don't have a home or a computer or a television or an air conditioner or the piece of art that relaxes me or a book that makes me think or a bed or a wardrobe or a desk. We rely so much on the people who work with their hands. If the stock isn't on the shelf, are you capable of buying the product you need? Then there's value in stocking a shelf for a doctor or lawyer to get what they need, as much value as the doctor saving a life. We need all of these jobs done, and without them, we are in an agrarian society. No lawyers. No science. No research. We just sit on a farm, growing our own food, and never reaching our potential. Survival is the only thing we do. But, the philosopher has to eat. The summer day needs someone to make you a sundae so you feel good and celebrate an ordinary day of summer. Or a lifeguard for the same purpose. Not everyone needs a 4-year, or 6-year, or 8-year college degree. It may be more prestigious, but the truth is, the hard work, the needs of society are met, by people just trying to make a living. If my mind can give them a little purpose, then I have put my mind to good use. The artist needs a canvas or a piece of paper to field their work. We function together, as one society. No one need look down on the other, because we are all integral to someone else's ability to fulfill their talents and use their skills and realize their desires.

End of rant.

*applaudes*
Total agreement, HaventGotALife! I think it's a very good thing that everyone has different talents. This way everyone can find their own space in society. And f...orget all that nonsense about the status of a profession. I admire people who can tile a floor or wall evenly (I definitely can't!) or manage to sew a straight seam in seconds (takes me hours). And baking good bread is definitely a more useful talent than being able to build a neutron bomb.

Todays argh: during my last vacation a colleague dropped one of my cacti (a silver torch) from the window sill and it broke into a dozen pieces which he left lying on the ground for 10 days. I tried to get the fragments to root but discovered this morning that they all suffer from an infection and are going to die. And the remainder of the mother plant looks pretty bad, too. I've had this cactus for almost 40 years and it's a species that first flowers at the age of about 50. No chance of any blossoms now :(

My wife teaches high school seniors, and this is something that she tries to impress upon them. From one of her recent posts:
Going to say it again. Education, and life, are not one size fits all. We have got to be supportive of all of our students. Our college bound students get a lot of support, but I feel like we need to do a LOT better at making sure our kids know that there are other options, many of which pay just as well, or even better, than the jobs held by college grads.

Nothing like going onto Photobucket and seeing that they're screwing people over in terms of space now. Last I checked my account was at 32 percent full.

Now it's shot up to this:

I haven't uploaded a ton onto it lately. :brickwall:

Just sent their support email account, a nice email, letting them know just how bad the service has gotten.

I thank you for reinforcing what I was saying with a more learned source, someone taught to be, someone trusted with, raising the next generation. My view on education reform, is that we should test kids early. I know that mothers and fathers love to see their young ones become scientists and doctors and lawyers and be told that their son or daughter was "gifted." I was someone who got good grades, but too often, I needed someone to show me how to complete a task that wasn't some abstraction like identifying the key components of a story. My learning style is hands-on. I liked examples when doing physical tasks like cooking or cleaning.

Show me, don't tell me, but you only have to show me once, and I have it down. I have meta-cognition and was told, just today, that I have above-average intelligence by someone with some credentials behind their name. Education should not be one-size-fits-all, take-a-standardized-test. Too often, that relies on rote-memorization and then they start just covering the material on the test, which is not teaching the child how to think, it's teaching them what to think. Identify the kids who are hands-on, and put them all in the same classroom to streamline their learning, and keeping them engaged in the material.

My brother could do 2nd-grade work in Kindergarten. He is smarter than me, sees more of the big picture than I ever could. Why tell him at 5, he can't do 2nd-grade work? Why is it determined by age, and not ability? Why does he have to be in a classroom with 7-year-olds, when it should just be up to when they learn, what they are capable of learning?

I am not someone who turns off their brain because something is seen as menial and not worth their time. I may work at a gas station, but I look at the time when it gets busy. I do overnights for a 24-hour station. I know that between 4:40 AM and 4:45 AM, my regulars are coming in for coffee. This means, I have to have floors mopped and swept, coffee products out, hot breakfast finished, by the time this first wave hits the store. I remember our regulars and have their orders (usually a pack of cigarettes and what brand, or their size of coffee, ready when they hit the register, just to speed things up). I may not know their names, but I do know they are in there every day and fill their mornings with chatter, always reflective of whether they are tired (especially at that time of the morning) and gauge how much chatter is too much. I want them to have an experience, being a small town and our prices higher than most, than to treat them like a number and just expect them to come back. It's always about how you treat people.

I dream of being a Social Worker, as I find the human animal fascinating and want to help and serve those who need it the most, but I take pride in my work. I don't just throw things at the oven and the fryer, I want this breakfast to be good enough that they come back and have some more the next day. I thank my bosses every chance that I get, I talk them up to customers and potential employees, and try to serve them for giving me the opportunity to be in a job. It sure beats not having one, and when I sell a half-gallon as opposed to a fifth of Jose Cuervo, I am happy because if the store does well, then my paycheck is more secure--hopefully.

I don't stop using my vocabulary because I have a logo and a name-tag on my shirt. I don't play down to the perception you have to be stupid to have a menial job. I love my job, and the people I work with are diligent and hard-working. One does tasks beyond her pay grade, and served in Desert Storm, another helps like she is a manager still (she was, but gave it up), another has been there 16 years and doesn't approach it like it's a drag she has been there so long, but an accomplishment, another is young and having a baby, and works 60 hours a week between 2 stores. Another has an eye for aesthetics, and therefore, can get things sold just by seeing the details of dirt and presentation. Our maintenance guy is in his 60s, and knows the store inside-and-out, and he is a speed-demon. I can't keep up with him. These are people I respect and would do anything for. And it doesn't matter that it's a gas station. We all have worth, are trying to pay the bills, and take pride in our job. Someone has to do it, and you don't need to be stupid to do it. I didn't fail into this job. I am paying my dues until I can get my degree, even at 32-years-old. We all have inherent worth. And how could I look down on people who do a job as well, or better, than I can?

Anyway, thank you again. And you made my irritation over being told I was stupid, and didn't belong there, into something worth sharing. :)

huh? Someone told you you were stupid?? Man, it takes a huge load of stupidity to think that of you! You're one of the most interesting posters here, someone who has something to say and who can explain his point of view clearly. You most definitely belong here!

My argh of the day is a wet one: walked home through the rain and promptly got splashed by a passing car from chest to toe. Freshly washed clothes all in a mess and myself soaked to the skin in dirty and ice cold water. Unfortunately, I was too surprised to memorize the number of the car.
May the driver have 4 flat tyres on the way home!!

I once knew a guy who scored 1600 on the SAT (back when that was the max possible).
He worked in a video store, and seemed perfectly happy. And he did have encyclopedic knowledge of films, very helpful in recommending rentals to other people.

I haven't seen him since before the Netflix boom/bust. I hope he's doing okay.

^One can be incredibly bright and still otherwise incompetent or useless. Hubby works with Math Phds and one guy, who was working with NASA, nearly burned the entire building down because he put his stainless steel coffee mug in the microwave and then left the kitchen. The saddest part is that he did this twice. The had to completely remodel the break room---twice. Just because someone is brilliant in one topic, doesn't me they can do anything else.

I supervise people with a Master's or Phd--who have asked me questions like:
-"I don't know what to do. I know it's not good enough for a 5 but it's not as bad as a 3, either. What score should I give it?"
-"Why does it say I'm working until 15:30? I can only work until 3:30. There's no way I can work until 15:30!"
-"Why does it say we can't use a tablet when accessing the site? What's so wrong about taking notes on paper?"
-"They said I should highlight the text and then print it. Does that mean it will turn yellow?"

Why try to get the number? Could you actually file a police report, or something?

I had a logo and name-tag on my shirt. I used the word "disingenuous," as we talked about Donald Trump (As in, "Oh, so you think Hillary Clinton is disingenuous?") and he looked at me like I had an ear growing out of my forehead , and said "I didn't expect a gas station clerk to use that word." I was stupid because I worked at a gas station. I have had the following exchange:

"What are you doing here?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I don't understand why you work here. You are so gifted. What are you doing here?"
"No ambition. This generation has no ambition."

No, I was out-of-work for a long time because of a medical condition you know nothing about. I DREAMED of having a menial job to come to every day, to not live off the system, to be a tax-payer, and earn my keep. I WANTED this job. They didn't lie to me. They said "you'll have to cook, you'll have a lot cleaning to do, it will be hard to stay up and function all night long. Can you do it?" Damn right I can! And I am! Through a sprained ankle and working two jobs that resulted in burnout, I still showed up and did my best. I'm paying my bills, goddammit. I'm working hard because I want to be good at my job--whether a street sweeper or President of the United States--and if I wasn't standing here, someone else would have to smile with your condescending bullshit. What are YOU doing in a gas station, if it's so beneath you to walk in here? Are my co-workers asked the same question? Do you see character flaws in them? "Oh, she deserves to work here! But he doesn't!"

Yeah, we are not always well-rounded. I walked into work dead-tired one day and someone asked for 2 gallons of gas at $2.45 per gallon. Oh, ok, so you need $2.90 in gas, huh? Rang him up, just like that. I laughed at myself. I can't add 2+2=$4.90. ;)
