A cheap-ass little Safelite cell phone was delivered to my address, but with someone else's name. I was unable to locate the person's actual address or phone # in any directory.
Is this someone's burn phone? Were they hoping to grab it out of my box before anyone noticed? Seriously, WTF?
Throw it out? Turn it over to police, or back to post office?

I'd suggest taking it to the post office.
I blame aliens.
Call the company that sold the phone and try to find out how the person pretending to be you paid for it.
Something similar happened to my husband. Someone bought custom Chevy parts and shipped them to our address. We don't even own a Chevy. With a tiny bit of investigating, we discovered someone had stolen his identity and had opened a Paypal account in his name, buying shit left and right. Hubby notified the company right away, closed the Paypal account, got a new credit card number and filed a police report. He had ZERO liability. He now has credit monitoring.
Safelink (Not Safelite) is apparently a free government phone program. Just looked it up online.

In that case it's highly likely someone had it shipped to your address hoping to grab it before you did, so they could sell it. One of my friends distributes free cell phones, and he says there are always people trying to register for more than one so they can sell the others. The phones aren't worth a whole lot, but even $15-$20 a phone makes it an appealing option if you can get a whole bunch of them. Trying to sell things. It's a pain in the butt. Either you run into scam artists or you run into no one at all who is interested.

Or you run into the people who want to trade something you don't want at all. I remember trying to sell my previous PC. A guy emailed me and said "instead of $200, I can trade you my ATV. It doesn't run, but you can use it for parts."
Oooh that one sucks. The guy I ran into wanted to buy it via a cashier's check. And when I heard that, I knew it was a scam. It was for a spare PS2 I had along with some games. Decided to keep it as a back up after that. Now I'm going via a different route to try to sell some Guitar Hero stuff along with some PS3 stuff.

I stopped using Craigslist for that reason, too. Even though I would state specifically in the post "No checks, no trades" I would get requests for trades, and yeah, a few checks. I hate using eBay, though, because shipping is always a pain in the ass where I live. We have one shipping center around here, and their hours are short, and they are expensive.
Yea I went through a newspaper ad and that went over like a lead balloon. So this time, I went through a site I'm familiar with. Nothing yet, but at least there's less of a chance of rip offs.
Or slowing down everytime they see a car coming in the opposite direction, slowing down on everybend in the road. There is then of course the 40mph club, speed limit 60 they do 40, speed limit 30 they do 40.

I often have to slow down when I see people coming the other way, because far too many of them DON'T KNOW WHERE THE GODDAMN DOUBLE LINE IS.
Only on 2-lane roads, though.
People who email you calling you a liar when you give unwanted stuff away on a freecycle site and you don't choose them. Pricks.
I would rather take a cashier's check than a personal check. But, of course, it could be a fake.

Oh, man, I had been skipping the thread because I didn't want to get a MOD telling me not to revive an old thread. So many fucking stupid things, and stupid people encountered since my last post.
Let me see if I can remember a few. How about:
Stopping in the left lane to make a turn, where there is a center lane to turn into to make turns? Yes, apparently a few are too stupid to use the center turning lane.
Oh, how about the police officer that stopped his car in the road in the right lane and then made a U-turn across the left lane and center lane, into the other lanes? I know what you're thinking: he had an emergency. Okay, but all he had to do was get into the left lane and merge into the turning lane and make that U-turn more safely.
And this one was last week at a Publix (since some people seem to think stupid people only shop at Wal-Mart): there's an entrance and exit side with a divider; each side has two lanes to turn left or right. I'm exiting the place and get into the left lane to turn left. The guy on the right left me little room and for some reason he wasn't turning. Turns out Mr. Ineptitude actually thought Publix made two lanes just for one car to make a turn, and he turned left as well after I went.
Oh, how about assholes who e-mail asking for the free item you are giving away on Craigslist and then never show up? That actually reminds me of a local story:
My local Craigslist section had a guy make a warning post to users about his experience giving away a couch. He offered it for free and said it must be picked up. Somebody contacted him, talked him into delivering it. He got there, the people looked like trouble, started bitching about the couch (which was fine according to the warning poster) and didn't even want to carry it in and then they started getting pissy and didn't want the couch anymore and demanded the guy who offered it for free and delivered it, to pay them to not take the couch or they'd call the police or some shit.

^In that case I'd have called the police. After all, he had the emails end everything to prove that they had ordered the couch.
I took the liberty to revive this thread as I think the topic is always up-to-date and it's better to recycle an old thread than starting a new one and clattering the database up. It also makes searching easier.
Todays argh-moment: moths started to eat my doll that I carefully preserved these 50+ years (and which by now is pretty valuable though I wouldn't dream of selling her). Usually, I'm not one to use the chemical cannon but in this case I'll make an exception. Die, moths!
