Things that frustrate us all

  • People who use their spot in a grocery line to hold a spot ahead of everybody else and then one or more people come in with more items. I was alreay in line. What you did was the equivalent of allowing a friend to cut in front of me. If you got a kid doing that, or an elderly person who can't move as fast and is maybe behind, I understand -- we're are human after.

You're one of those customers then. I bet you're the type to demand a new till being opened when all of them are anyway.

  • People who cut in front of you while driving, then go slower than you are.
  • Likewise, people who weave in front of you and then make a turn a minute or less later. Why not skip the dangerous driving and pull in behind me?
  • People who spit their gum on hte parking lot of a place of business, likewise the assholes who do it INSIDE stores.

Yep, I've come across people who pull out in front of me into a 60mph zone despite their being nothing behind me and turn off at the very next juction.

But if we want to talk driving :-

Failing to use indicators

Thinking the speed limit doesn't apply to them

Thinking the speed limit doesn't apply at 02:00

Those that drive at 40mph no matter the speed limit. So they pull away in 30mph zones, just for you to be stuck behind them when the speed limit goes to like 50 or 60mph

Those that speed up the moment you try to overtake, only to slow back down when you get past.

Tailgaters, despite you doing the speed limit.

Those that don't understand you give way to the right at roundabouts (in the UK) including at mini-roundabouts.

Those that wait until the last few yards to mere in front of you when the lanes go down from 3 to 2 for example.

Those that wait until the last possible moment to change lanes when exiting a motorway. Despite being told usuallly a mile away that an exit is coming up

Those that don't plan ahead and move into lane 2 so as to allow cars to enter a motorway.

I'm sure I'm missing a few.

Merging the "Frustration" thread and the "Arrrgh!" thread, since they're essentially the same subject matter. I'll keep the Frustration title, since it's more descriptive.

One time after my leg injury, I was in line at a grocery waiting for the homeless-looking guy in front of me to count out about $5 in change for over 5 minutes for what he was buying. I had a single item I wanted to buy, and stood there with my cane patiently waiting and in pain from standing that long. But that's not what bothered me.

Some guy in line behind me, apparently just off work from how he was dressed, had about 5 or 10 items including ice cream in his hands. After the guy ahead of me finally finished and left, and I'm next, the guy behind me said, "Do you mind if I go ahead of you? I need to get home soon and have this ice cream and it's melting." I said, "Yes, I do mind, because we've both been standing here a long time, I only have one item, I have a bad leg, and you should have asked me while that other guy was still in line."

Then the guy said, "You know, it's people like you who--" I don't know what he said after that, because I lost my temper for him thinking it was more important for him to get through the line instead of me, and told him so. I was pretty upset that he somehow considered himself entitled. I was shaking with anger when I left the store.

Lots of things related to my job (teaching) frustrate me. Mostly because the higher ups inevitably get some terrible idea that they impose on us without asking for our input.

For example, my school now does a 40 minute 'Review & Remediation' block twice a week. Why? It's the trendy thing to do these days. It's supposed to help the kids who need extra help have a time to do so. In practice, it means:

- We have a different bell schedule every day

- We have to tell our homeroom students where they're supposed to go a day ahead of time, which involves logging on to a google doc and sifting through all the names for the 19 or so I have in my homeroom.

- All this paperwork is so we can hold students accountable if a teacher wants to see them and they blow it off...but if they DO blow it off, we've never been told how to report it or what the consequences are.

- On R&R days we have to monitor the students left in our homeroom (keep them off their phones) while ALSO giving the 10-20 students there for extra help individual attention. (You may pick up on a slight problem here)

- Because kids are coming for help with different topics, you end up having to prepare A LOT. It's like teaching three different classes at once, and it's a lot of extra work for me on top of the work that I already have.

For the record, I'm required to work from 7:15 - 2:45. I was at school today from 6:45 - 4:30. I did the same on Monday. I'll probably do the same tomorrow. This R&R schedule isn't entirely to blame, but it's certainly not helping!

Re: aaargh!!

Not necessarily, I'm afraid, CaptainMurdock. I've been in the very same situation here. Maybe I phrase my opinion badly or maybe some people just wait for a chance to bash me. The result is the same. I keep getting called a Nazi by people who never have been to Germany nor are aware of the fact that I am a left-wing liberal and actively fighting the neo-Nazi movement (family tradition, kindof: all my grandparents and their siblings have been in the German Resistance. Some actually survived).

No you haven't been in that situation here, ever. You've been justifiably corrected for saying some really offensive things on numerous occasions, and it wasn't because of bad phrasing or people just waiting for a chance to bash you, either. Quit making excuses, making things up, and playing the victim.
Isn't this all just ancient history?

I recently got a new desktop computer at work. Before it was sent to me, the company IT department asked what software I need on it.

I explained that, since I maintain a large number of products, I need many different development environments installed. I told them which ones I need, where to get them, what components from each to install, and in what order to do everything.

It took them weeks to finalize the thing, so I assumed that meant they were making sure they did everything right. Ha ha, what a fool am I? I got it a couple weeks ago and it quickly became clear that they hadn't followed my instructions at all. Out of 6 development environments, they installed 3. They installed the wrong components, and clearly did things in the wrong order. This means a lot of things simply don't work.

Now, I am having to go back and uninstall and reinstall everything. It took all day yesterday and I have to do some more today. Bleh.

Re: aaargh!!

Ziyal, could it be that this distant relative simply has the wrong photo? Maybe the person who got the minor order is not your ancestor but someone else (a friend or other relative) who got his order around the same time; maybe even in the same ceremony. A mix up can happen. And since it was so long ago there is nobody living who could identify the person on the photo. But with a little luck there might be a written document. Afaik parts of the Imperial court archive survived the revolution. Do you happen to speak Russian? Then you could contact the Russian archieves directly and spare yourself a lot of red tape.

There's little chance of the photo being the wrong guy. The cousin had already sent me an amazing family group photo -- four generations of our ancestors! This individual photo is pretty clearly a younger version of the patriarch.

It didn't even occur to me to try to verify it officially, so thank you for the idea! I don't speak Russian any more, but I do read/write well enough that I can produce a good business letter with a little help from my friends Mr. Google Translate and Ms. Dictionary.

You and my wife would have a LOT to talk about! I get an earful of it just about every night.

Oh Facebook™, is there nothing you can't ruin?

I would've said "ruin" was too strong a word... but then I saw a post on a closed FB Star Trek group about how conflicts between the fans were killing everything and people were leaving in droves, and left an encouraging comment about how pro- and anti-JJ fanatics could be equally ignored.

The main Star Trek page on facebook is insane. I was told, I'm an advocate of racism and violence just for liking the Abrams films. I did have fun getting into a logic argument with some jerk though. Delusions can run very very strong in people. In the end, I just gave up. I'm glad this place is neutral and fun.
Ironically, the one place on this board which is NOT "neutral" has "Neutral" in the name. :vulcan:

I was going to comment on this list, but upon further consideration, Australis did a much better job of it:
1. Playing games on facebook and getting to a part where you need help and hardly anyone helps so you are stuck forever!
2. Playing facebook games and getting really into the game only to have it canceled!
7. Playing a game and right in the middle of playing it goes blank on you! FACEBOOK YOU ARE AWFUL ABOUT THIS!!!!!!
It's Facebook. It's evil (really). Play better games.

8. Getting really excited cause you bought a game or someone else did and you download it onto your computer only to find that it will not work at all!!!!!
9. Not being able to find the games you loved as a child and wanting so badly to play them!!!!!
10. Finding said games on internet only to find they either aren't free or you can't get them because some jerk wants to send your credit card number to someone else!
There are plenty of emulators for all sorts of games out there, you just need to look around. ANd yes, some people will try and make you pay heaps for them, just keep looking. Mind you the only game I play is Freecell, and damned little of that in case it over-excites me.

Yeah, you're gonna get that. Laugh at them, "get real", "you can't be serious!", that kind of thing. And you need to hang out with better people. MUCH better people.

Yeah, there's no way around that one, happens to me once a week, at least.

You need a better email provider (try mail.com or gmail.com) or a better internet connection.

Family. It happens to us all. :)

You sure aren;t the only person that's happened to, and it'll keep happening, sorry 'bout that.

Yeah, see that a lot too. All I doi is drive carefully. Sadly cars don't come with 'Idiot on board' stickers.

Are these two related? :) The slightly serious answer, try and leave things in the same place when you're finished with them. Any oldie on here will tell you they have a place they leave their keys, always the same place, it's that or spend hours rummaging around the house.

Yeah, not cool, either of those.

Obama as president
Obamacare
People who think I hate black people just because I can't stand Obama
People who hate us just because we live in the USA
Okay, I'm getting real serious now. This I don't understand. You need to ask why or how this is personally affecting you. Universal health care has been around for a while in countries like Britain and Australia, and it is only seen as a good for the whole society. Compared to your previous President, Obama is a caring and highly intelligent individual. Obamacare is a big step forward for the US, and acordsing to some of us, not big enough. The minor sacrifice you make financially makes a huge difference for the poor and hopeless, and should you ever end up in a bad situation, you. Yes, you. My wife had an operation that in the US woiuld be at least $2000. Here, I paid nothing. My son is on dialysis, and wouldn't be able to get medical insurance in the US. He gets an expensive machine and saline solution for, in effect, free. Because rthe cost, and generated monies, are shared. Think about that. Some medical bills in the US are hundreds of thousands. How could you, on your own, afford those?

As to people hating Americans, it's because Americans overseas are often dicks. But then again, so are most people when not at home.

13. People who think they are better than you are and stick their noses into your business
18. People who think they know all about me but really have no clue
So you've met us, yes? :D
I don't know how old spockkirk is, but I am guessing she has not lived on this earth as long as most of us. Most of the items on her list appear to be the same as most middle/junior high school teenage girls.

As to the Obama/Obamacare thing, I agree with the poster who said, "not all Republicans are racist, but racists are Republican". I have found this to be very true, especially in my adopted home of rural North Carolina. :alienblush:

^ I hate to admit it, being a Democrat, but there are racist Democrats. And racist members of other parties. And racist independents.

Ironically, the one place on this board which is NOT "neutral" has "Neutral" in the name. :vulcan:

You clearly meant that in a negative way, even though there's nothing wrong with individuals (as opposed to the non-editorial news media) not being neutral on international, domestic, political, and social issues, so it's a silly complaint anyway. But I wonder what you know of it, since you don't even post in TNZ?

But then, beyond being a silly complaint, it's not even remotely true, since the rest of the board is every bit as opinionated on controversial issues as TNZ is, and is in fact usually much more offensive in their handling of those discussions because people are unable to express themselves fully when responding without risking an infraction. There are advantages in being able to call out racist, sexist, homophobic, and trolling behavior for what it is.

We consistently have discussions in TNZ which are actually much more civil than many of the ones on the rest of the board, despite the reputation we have among people who visit infrequently, haven't visited at all, or who received a backlash because they said something stupid or bigoted. We don't suffer fools gladly, but we are fair.

That's a most interesting analysis, Locutus. Frankly, I've never been to TNZ as I thought: "if discussions in MISC are already so heated, how badly a tone will prevail in TNZ then?!" But from what you say I gather it's quite the opposite, really?

What, in your opinion and experience as both a Mod and poster are the reasons for that? The "ability to express oneself fully" as you phrased it can not be the sole reason since you took great efforts to stress the fact that the posters at TNZ don't make use of this possibility, what with them discussing in a more polite tone and all.

I think you misinterpreted Sector 7 there. It's quite a witty sentence and an almost irresistable verbal game which, I trust, everyone would have made, had they thought of it first. The smilie depicts a Vulcan raising an eyebrow at an illigocal statement and thus fits the remark very well, as it underlines the un-logic (pardon the bad English) which makes the statement so amusing in the first place. To me, at least, this particular smilie does not hold any hint of scepticism, criticism or other negatively intended -isms that you seem to attribute to it.
Perhaps we should ask Bonzie for her expertize as an impartial? She uses that smilie occasionally.

You're way overthinking this.

Nothing was misinterpreted. His inclusion of the smiley to draw attention to his wordplay (which honestly for a first language English speaker is not half as clever as you think), has no bearing on the meaning of his sentence, which was clearly to malign TNZ.

TNZ's reputation is based primarily on how it used to be, not how it is now. It used to be a far more rough-and-tumble place, but since the worst trolls were largely driven out, it's become a nice little community.
