Things that frustrate us all

Re: aaargh!!

Not necessarily, I'm afraid, CaptainMurdock. I've been in the very same situation here. Maybe I phrase my opinion badly or maybe some people just wait for a chance to bash me. The result is the same. I keep getting called a Nazi by people who never have been to Germany nor are aware of the fact that I am a left-wing liberal and actively fighting the neo-Nazi movement (family tradition, kindof: all my grandparents and their siblings have been in the German Resistance. Some actually survived).

Makes for a few really good arrrrgh-moments, though. :D And fortunately, the vast majority of posters here is able and willing to solve disagreements in a mature, polite and flame-free way.

Ziyal, could it be that this distant relative simply has the wrong photo? Maybe the person who got the minor order is not your ancestor but someone else (a friend or other relative) who got his order around the same time; maybe even in the same ceremony. A mix up can happen. And since it was so long ago there is nobody living who could identify the person on the photo. But with a little luck there might be a written document. Afaik parts of the Imperial court archive survived the revolution. Do you happen to speak Russian? Then you could contact the Russian archieves directly and spare yourself a lot of red tape.

My current arrgh: the lift/elevator in my house that was being modernized 2 weeks ago (in spite of working perfectly) has been out of order ever since. Last wednesday and yesterday it actually worked for a few minutes in the evening, only to be out of order again the next morning. It'd be amusing if I hadn't injured my foot. Hopping up three stories with a full shopping basket is surely strengthening the leg muscles but it weakens my sense of humour considerably.

I remember things were very heated here when the film first came out. Probably why I was gone for so long until my recent return, though My regular forum hangouts were getting kinda stale. I came back for my love of Trek. Facebook drama has been my Aaaargh! for a while. At least people here are civil and respectful. That's what I like. Anyway that's my two cents on the matter.

Re: aaargh!!

I'm a bit prejudiced about facebook, I'm afraid. It's not exactly safe when it comes to data protection and in their TOS the small print says that you grant them full rights to everything you post (text, pictures, movies, music - really everything). Over here we have a ministery for data security and they explicitly warned people not to use facebook because they so badly violate privacy. (and there seem to be a lot of morons on it)
I much prefer boards, chatrooms and email groups for social interactions. They're usually a good deal safer

Re: aaargh!!

I don't use facebook under my real name hardly anymore. I'm part of a sci-fi roleplay group and that person has pretty much taken over. I keep up with Trek news on it, but it's mostly click-bate and havens for people who like hiding behind the guise under something nice to justify being jerks to people who just like movies and want to be entertained. I need to ween myself off Facebook more. A couple of my friends just treat me like a personal psychiatrist now and it's starting to wear thin on me.

Obama as president
Obamacare
People who hate us just because we live in the USA

People who think I hate black people just because I can't stand Obama

I have noticed an interesting coincidence, which I'm reminded of now.

Not all republicans are racists, but all racists are republicans.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you and I weren't born in the same century.

That's a kinder way of saying what I was thinking.:bolian:

I wanna hear your version.

And you survived????
You're thinking of the Pinto. Fortunately we never owned one of those...
Yes, the Ford Pinto had the fuel tank that would burst into flames in a rear-end collision. The Gremlin was just a piece of crap.

Also, the Gremlin already looked like it had been rear-ended.

Not all republicans are racists, but all racists are republicans.

My grandfather--a lifelong Democratic voter--is also a seemingly incurable racist.

So, things that frustrate me: stupid generalizations.

I think that is a very disingenuous way of framing your past missteps here.

Nice name! Our local priest insists in the bells getting rung at 6 am like crazy (on weekends, too!). Sadly, all dogs in the neighbourhood are very musically inclined and howl in protest. For reasons of solidarity ours joins. It's known as dawn-demonium in the neighbourhood.

That's very anti-social of him. The churches around here used to do that as well, but people complained so much they all stopped doing it. They probably worked out that irritating your potential congregation is not a good move for the Church in these times.

Now nobody rings church bells until at least 9am.

No you haven't been in that situation here, ever. You've been justifiably corrected for saying some really offensive things on numerous occasions, and it wasn't because of bad phrasing or people just waiting for a chance to bash you, either. Quit making excuses, making things up, and playing the victim.

  • People who use their spot in a grocery line to hold a spot ahead of everybody else and then one or more people come in with more items. I was alreay in line. What you did was the equivalent of allowing a friend to cut in front of me. If you got a kid doing that, or an elderly person who can't move as fast and is maybe behind, I understand -- we're are human after.

This reminds me of a time a lady in front of me invited her friend to just cut in front of me and have her order done ahead of me. I made a deal out of it -- she just let somebody cut infront of me for a seperate order because they were friends. I started tellings everybody this was not okay. She didn't ask me, and she certainly hasnt' asked the people behind me. I pushed my food ahead and got rung up before the line cutter, meanwhile the cashier who should have said something, did the wrong thing and said nothing. There is a right and there is a wrong in some situations and what happened there was wrong.

  • People who cut in front of you while driving, then go slower than you are.
  • Likewise, people who weave in front of you and then make a turn a minute or less later. Why not skip the dangerous driving and pull in behind me?
  • People who spit their gum on hte parking lot of a place of business, likewise the assholes who do it INSIDE stores.

I've never used it under my real name. Just not safe to do so.
