Things that annoy you off about TOS

Only one thing ever annoyed me about TOS...the concept of "parallel planets" was okay, but after the 3rd or 4th visit to one, it did tend to get very old. My thoughts were that when the production crew ran out of shootable scripts, they resorted to "Hey, let's do another parallel planet episode!"

Or the old "time travel" plot device. Boy, I hate those.

I recall one of the TOS production members (Justman?) stating that parallel planet and time travel episodes were budget savers, allowing the use of existing props, costumes and sets.

Some (a lot?) of the complaints can be boiled down to the constraints of a TV budget 50 years ago. I'm extremely happy that we got what we got, and it was good enough that it's still around to complain about.

A lot of Trek's contemporaries weren't anywhere near comparable quality.

So no, there's not much that bothers me about TOS. It was my first Trek, and I love it like a ragged old teddy bear.

I don't mind "parallel Earth" stories if they're well written and executed. This idea was in the earliest formats of the series as budget saving solutions. It wasn't a "ran out of ideas" thing at all. The Omega Glory was one of the earliest scripts of the series, written by Roddenberry as a choice for the second pilot (I also happen to enjoy that episode a lot).

If anything, some of the music usage will grate on me (love themes being layered on too thick for example), or really obvious even on a small static filled screen stunt doubles (Kirk vs Khan & Ben Finney). But those are tiny niggles. For the most part, nothing about Trek bugs me. Only that it was cancelled too soon.

The main thing is probably having heroic music play almost every. single. time. the Enterprise is shown (even when it is hijacked, which also happened a bit too much).

TAS is even worse. They have about five musical cues total, I swear, and everyone is played ad nauseum. It's really distracting.

How many times has that happened?

No idea, but it has happened (as told to me by retired Navy guys). Basically, the CO is responsible for everything that happens on/to the ship, and if the crew steers into a pier or whatnot that means it's the CO who gets it. There are plenty of officers who rate a command and never enough ships, so there's no reason to be lenient or forgiving of cock-ups, and it forces the COs to really pay attention and make sure their crews are on the ball and everything is ship-shape. Even when they do great, most COs command one ship for maybe a year or so. They don't stay with the same vessel or crew for years on end. Rotation is the name of the game.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Still sucks though. One map is out of date, you run your ship onto a sandbar that shouldn't be there and *BOOM*...not your ship anymore.

I personally don't regard the TOS adventures as being equivalent to a modern Navy. Kirk is on a mission of discovery and is frequently out of contact with base.
I regard Kirk's adventures as equivalent with Cook, Magellan etc. If those guys ran up their ship on a sandbar, they'd either be stranded or able to lash some errant ensign for the mistake.

The lack of true diversity -- at the end of the day, it was still a white guy in a white hierarchy with some minorities working for him.

The lack of other Starfleet ships shown onscreen. I had hoped they would cure this with the remastered episodes, and while there have been some offerings, I still would like to see other types of starships.

It's reasonable to assume the rules are different for a ship that is out on the frontier like Magellan, but the Enterprise is always going back to starbases, so that idea sorta flounders. And even if there were reasons for keeping the captain there for five years, once that mission is over, there's no good reason to keep his crew on that same damned ship, refit or not.

Yeh but you had the Enterprise out of contact for 3 months with no problem while they were chasing an asteroid. Also Cook did restock supplies at some bases in Africa or South America.

And when investigating Deneva it seemed Kirk was going to have to make the big decision. The parasites had destroyed entire Solar Systems without a big bunch of Federation ships finding out why contact was lost. The same deal with the giant Amoeba thingy.

The edited title of this thread annoys me off.

Was it originally "piss you off"? If so, why did it get changed. There's not a profanity rule on this board, is there?
I believe the use of profanity in thread titles is frowned upon. In actual posts, you can use whatever the fuck language you want. :techman:

That's some logical sh*t, I will admit. I suppose it would look bad if n00bz were browsing and every thread was full of profanity.

Your response implies that I'm arguing with you. I said it might've made sense on the 5 year mission thingie. However, the whole bridge crew together forever afterwards: no.

I didn't even notice the 'off' in the title remaining after it was changed!

It reminds me of a job I had many years ago. There was a notice on the bulletin board of some event taking place on the 23rd of the next month. The date ended up being changed, but whoever corrected the notice changed the number only, so it ended up reading the 26rd.

I honestly didn't even know that "piss" was considered profane.

If they had to change it, they could have at least removed the "off" so the title still made grammatical sense.
