Things I have always wanted to know.

If Voyager is any indication, shuttlecraft are pretty easy to produce. Captain Janeway couldn't always replicate a cup of Joe, but popping out another shuttle was easy enough. They were like clowns in a mini-car.

Unless they buy them. I expect you could legally own an Apache or an Abrams, as long as the armaments were removed/neutralized.

And? High ranking Coast Guard officers or officials in civilian services don't have their own personal ships either. The Director of NASA doesn't have a personal space shuttle.

The President and Vice President have Air Force One and Two.

Most politicians, from what I have seen, have their own personal fancy pants cars in addition to their own personal cars.

I would think in the 24th/25th century, with the vast amount of resources at their disposal, they have a few spare ships around for emergency use.

And by the way, Admiral Riker in "All Good Things..." said, "One of the advantages of being an admiral is you get to choose your own ship." Granted, it was a Q created anti-time future, but it was based on Picard's knowledge.

Plus, there's Admiral Hanson in "The Best of Both Worlds" two parter, and Admiral Hayes in FIRST CONTACT. Granted, both were Borg invasion scenarios, but it shows the possibility.

Those aren't technically their own personal planes, but rather whichever plane is available on that day is used and becomes Air Force One/Two simply because the President/Vice President are aboard. The planes do go into rotation or other uses.

Not relevant to this particular discussion.

Just because they were using those ships does not mean they personally owned those ships, anymore than any Admiral owns their flagship. For example, an aircraft carrier is not the personal ship of the Admiral in charge of that carrier group.

Exactly. I have no doubt Picard could go through channels and request a ship but doesn't have one always on standby.

I'm not saying Riker owned the future Enterprise-D, but the dialogue clearly stated he got to keep that ship as his to be on standby or for missions.

As far as Air Force One and Two goes, they are still earmarked for their use when needed. That tells me they are on standby for their use. And even with them being rotated around, I guarantee there are a few ready to go that can be designated as either callsign while in flight.

And the cars for politicans is relevant to this discussion because it's the same principle... mode of transportation that is on standby for their use.

I would not expect the commandant of the Academy to have the same travel expectations as the President of a country or sovereign state. As such, I think regular requests for transportation would suffice up the chain of command based upon scheduling. Not Picard's own personal ship just sitting and waiting in case he needs it. Strikes me as quite inefficient.

Well not wanted as such but maybe answers to things left hanging. What was the fate of Moriarty? What did the Ent. D crew do with that holo module he was in at the end of his second story on TNG? Did they just leave it on a shelf and it was lost in the saucer crash in Generations or did they hand it over to Starfleet for more study?

Was it mentioned in the novels?

Also how did the EMH manage to knock someone up? Didn't that happen in that episode where the EMH was on another world on his way to the Federation?
There is just something off about this post.

That was mostly sloppy dialogue. Something like a capital ship is not going to be held on standby so a flag officer can take it out for a spin.

Which does not make Air Force One/Two the personal airplanes of the President/Vice President.

There is a huge difference between a car being at the beck and call of a politician and a flag officer having a whole ship at their beck and call. For starters, those cars are not worth several billion dollars.

It wasn't sloppy dialogue because Riker said Starfleet was about to decommission her, so he chose the Enterprise as his own ship. It was a way of keeping her from fading into the night.

It also makes sense... instead of just scrapping an older ship, keep it on standby for emergencies.

Pretty sure that if an US Navy admiral decided he needed an aircraft carrier to go off on a some personal quest, the answer would be hearty laughter. Even if the quest was to defend democracy against a hidden foreign threat that only he has evidence of, such action must first be presented to and approved by congress.

Not to mention the crew of any ship so requested. 400 crew are probably not just sitting around with the ship fully fueled, armed and prepped for action, just waiting for some officer to go on a spurious adventure.
