They don't want my trash!!!

^Yeah, they'd rather sit on the furntiure and watch TV instead of using the bike....

Why do people engage in the craven act of scavenging? Is there material benefit to be gained from taking old, broken possessions? Are these people crazy hoarders like you see on Today Tonight or is there some genuine benefit to rooting through people's garbage?

Am I missing out on a potential wealth bonanza?

I had a friend who was a garbage man and he would take broken electronics put out for trash and fix them. He said 9 times out of 10 it was just a fuse that had blown, and with a little repair it would work just fine.

I imagine a lot of stuff that gets put out for trash is like that: minor damage that the owner just can't be bothered to repair, so they toss it. More power to anyone who can grab and fix it!

My neighbors down the street put out an exercise bike and some busted out furniture and put a "free" sign on them and at the end of the day the perfectly good exercise bike was still there and the broken up furniture was gone.

In their defence, I would have done the same thing (were I to have a use for broken furniture anyway). A person passing by doesn't know the exercise bike is fine. All they know is that it's being given away with the trash, so the assumption would be it must be broken in some way, and exercise bikes aren't easy to fix or re-use. It's not like you can sit and try out the bike by the kerb-side :)
