Thesis

What that person told you does not sound like it could be correct. There should be a dot after the f regardless of whether you are citing for just one sentence or a while paragraph. It is true that if you are citing for a paragraph then there will not be a dot after the last bracket, but there should still be a dot after the f. Honestly I don't think that other person knows what they are saying!

Anyway, good luck with everything. I hope you can be done with all of this soon!

After the f yes, but after the bracket?

Thanks. To be done with it, is what keep me going. ;)

This is so confusing.

If you are just citing for one sentence, you should put a dot after the f AND after the bracket. It does look weird to have a dot, a bracket, and then another dot, but that's the way I was taught to do it (and from searching various style guides online it looks like that's the way most others do it too). If you are citing for a paragraph then there would be no dot after the bracket, just after the actual sentence and the f.

Ah! See thats what she told me. So its correct after all! :)

So but what is if I have no f, because I used just one page of a book, so its only like page 9. Then I always have a dot behind the bracket, but not the sentences, no matter if I am citing for just one sentences or a whole paragrapgh, yes? (indirekt citing is meant here, not direct)

And what about mixtures? Like ...( ...S. 4 f., S. 25).... dot behind the bracket or dot behind the sentences?

TerokNor

^Whether you use an f or not is irrelevant to whether there is a dot after the bracket. If you are citing for one sentence, there is always a dot after the bracket. If you are citing for a paragraph, there is never a dot after the bracket. It is an unrelated issue to using the f or mixtures.

Done! Just printed it and let it bind (is that the right word?)...well so that it looks like a book now (well 3 aactually, as we need to give 2 to the university and one I wanted myself). The CD is done too. Now I only need one more thing, before I can drop it off at university tomorrow...I need to decite if I agree to have it puplic, so that others can read it online or borrow an exemplar of the bibliothek or if I don´t want that.
Hmm... have to think about it.
Did you decite to have your things puplic?

I didn't have such an option at all. A copy is at the uni and can be viewed by any student who requests it, but it is not available for everything from a library.

But if I were given such a choice, my decision would probably depend on my plans. If I planned to continue my education and proceed to doctorate, I would want it public and available as proof of my scientific work. If not, then not.

But the choice is yours. It's not that this is personal data that you make public, it's a thesis.

We didn't have a choice, they published all of our theses to the library where anyone can check them out. That's why they had such stringent formatting and citation rules that they went over with a fine tooth comb - because every thesis was meant to look exactly the same (besides the content of course) when they sit on the shelf in the library. And I suppose because these are works representing the university, they don't want to put out some poorly formatted garbage. The school also required us to upload a version to an online library so that people could access a PDF version.

Anyway, I am very happy for you that you have finished! Go have fun, you deserve it. Go to the movies and eat a great meal, or something else you enjoy. Finishing a thesis is a great relief.

I don't see any harm in making it public.

Even I opted for the public option. ;) And at the time I thought it was a total failure but I had already decided on it earlier. I still don't know whether it was a failure, of course, but I'm much more optimistic about it. I was quite depressed for a few days after handing it in so if that happens to you, just hang in there. The feeling of emptyness will pass.

Yeah, I have nearly decidet now for the puplic option... nearly. Though what is, if I did something wrong and then they say I copied? I hope I did not and have not forgot something, am a very honest person, but as I am quite human of course mistakes can happen (especially as I am not very proficient at all those science working rules, as you have noticed). I think before they make it puplic they run it trough some program that searches for that kind of things.
If there should be something you think they just tell me and I can undo the mistake or does it mean then I tried to betray them?

As I already bought ...5 DVDs, 6 books and 1 audio book while writing the thesis to have always something nice looking forward too. I am a bit moneyless right now to get me anything for finishing it. *L* Though when I have dropped it of at university tomorrow I think I may just get some ice-cream. Thats not expensive.

And thanks for reading this thread and for all the advices. :)

You mean plagiarism? Unless you tried to rival Guttenberg you should be safe. ;) I also worried somewhat about that because there are only so many different ways to say something but then again, I'm sure things like that don't count as plagiarism. You didn't plagiarise so you don't have anything to worry about in that regard.

I think every honest person worries a bit about that but yeah, absolutely no need to. Even if there are a couple of mistakes you're safe. It takes a lot more to get into trouble.
Mistakes happen.

That what I mean. And *L* no, no little Guttenberg here, I did write it myself, but what if I forgot something?
Ah oh well, life is risc. Will decite for puplic and hope everythings ok with my work. At least that way someone else may learn something from reading it. Too much work to hide it away.

I found a mistake.... there is a word and a number.... but no space between them. Argh! Actually I don´t wanted to look inside it anymore, but now I had a look inside and this jumps into my eye! Hope there are not so many others!

Meh, and earlier today I was thinking of telling you to not look inside until you know the result.
Exactly the same happened to me (I told the story before) and it annoyed me to no end. Don't worry. :)

Yeah, guess you never can get every little mistake out of it... and it is only a lttle one. Still... annoying.
Well I will not have another look inside there, thats for sure.

However as I just talk about annoying... different topic, but I was looking at job offers and am ANNOYED about what I read. First of all some seem not to know anything about children. There is one offer, that does partly open work with the 1-3 year old..ok.. some do that, but they have over 90 (!!!) children...and sorry, one not really has to be an expert to know that over 90 children between 1 and 3 all together might be a little stressful for the kids (and adults).

And then there is an offer that says they pay well (übertariflich)... HA! When I read what they pay I thought they wanna kid me, they pay 9 Euro per hour (Brutto). That is offending! I get more than that when working as an helper in my holiday-job...
I hope no one applys to that offer, though I guess someone will be desperate and take it.

Ok, rant over. :)
