I'm of the opinion Rom was assassinated about two weeks after WYLB. You can't just completely turn around a society like that.

I have it on good authority that Rom is a fan of the old Earth film series Star Wars, particularly the prequel movies, and has been seen taking notes while watching them.

In order to ensure the profitability and continuing economy, the Ferengi Alliance will be reorganized into the first Ferengi Empire! For a rich and profitable society.

Yeah, I mean Quark is alive (or managed to franchise his business before the 2390s), and Nog managed to become legendary to the point of starships being named for him 800 years later. So, it's not like Rom's family went the way of the Romanovs. But there was probably at least some backpedaling and slow progress after the events of Rom's ascendancy.

At the very least, I imagine most of the "progress" only applied on a public relations front (to get in good with the new post-Dominion Era powers) and the true businessmen running Ferenginar behind their puppet's back still acted and did business in the old ways.

Maybe the planets that make up the alliance were originally independent colonies and then unified to form the alliance. Also they seemed to have at least one vassal race, the Hupyrians whose home planet was in Ferengi territory according to Star Trek: Star Charts.

Governmental names always interest me, because of their likely connection to history. An "Alliance" of Ferengi makes sense, because of its laissez-faire (or pseudo laissez-faire) attitude. Ferengi don't govern one another. They join an alliance for mutual benefit.

Ferengi makeup is one of the few things I think DIS could do better than was originally done - since it was already pretty close to a full face mask, and for some reason the DIS makeup department loves to do full silicone masks even for races that don't need it, like the Orions.
