The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

Magneto seems worthy of horseman status on the basis of power level alone.

spoiler]

There are a lot of characters who would be 'worthy' based on power alone. That doesn't mean putting them in that situation would make for a good movie. And it didn't for Magneto.

You just didn't want to see Magneto at all, that doesn't make the movie bad. A more powerful horseman is certainly better than a weak one.

It's true I didn't want to see him. But the movie was bad, in large part because of the poor treatment of him and in large part because bringing him back massively watered down the actual main villain who turned out to be a shadow of his own self. Which was entirely predictable, which is why I didn't want to see him.

And nobody said they should have used a 'weak' horseman instead. There are plenty of other options there.

Although, to be entirely clear, by far the most 'classic' and popular horseman in the history of Apocalypse stories is the guy whose entire mutant power is that he has wings. So power is not the end all and be all of the position, either.

Magneto can have much more interesting roles than being a horseman because of his philosophy. His philosophy doesn't quite coincide with Apocalypse, and he's not really genocidal.

Nevermind, apparently they are showing up in the new movie. :alienblush:

They're not.

Dark Phoenix, for all that it's being promoted as being a "cosmic adventure", really isn't; it's a retelling of The Last Stand, but involving an alien antagonist (who is NOT Liandra) and a single adventure into space that 'enhances' the powers that Jean already had inside her (the "Phoenix Force" is not a cosmic entity in this film despite perceptions to the contrary)

I was hoping they wouldn't release this film in it's current state.

Even on a surface-level, it makes no sense. It's in the 1990s... yet the characters look exactly the same as they did in the 1960s...

Yet they are supposed to look like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen by 2000...

It's like those involved just stopped caring.

The international trailer is out. I like that it shows them saving people at the start. I feel like that's been missing in the other movies.
At least here she kills a character no one cares about. :)

Based on pictures, the poster and tiny bits of the trailer it looks like there's two random mutant "bad guys" on Magneto's side. Do we know who they are? ie. which comic characters they're based on?

Wow, that's a much better trailer than the last US trailer.

They didn't age anyone because they probably didn't want to limit their acting by putting them in old people makeup.

Sure, it worked for True Detective but the FOX people don't have that confidence.

Or they wanted to keep the comic book feel by having time move but the characters stay the same.

You must hate the pre-Craig James Bond films if the characters not aging bothers you enough to elicit this kind of reaction.

Not really, no.

Yeah, it is. It's not the worst in the world or even in the franchise, but is a bad movie. For various reasons, only some of which are related to Magneto.

The point is that a stronger horseman would be an attractive option to him,so it makes sense for him to use Magneto, despite your unwillingness to see the character.

No, the point is putting Magneto in that position did not make for a good story or for good character development. And there are other characters who would make far more sense because they are also strong, they might actually make sense in the position and they would actually offer real dramatic possibilities. While also pulling the audience in as they see one of their heroes falling in a painful way (an aspect which was pretty much always the whole point of the horsemen, and which Magneto could never pull off because he was already the bad guy).

The most recent International Trailer has a snippet of dialogue suggesting that there might be an external cosmic element to the "Phoenix Force" after all in contradiction to my earlier comments on its nature, but it's still clear that The Last Stand was a significant influence on the film's treatment of Jean and the way in which her powers manifest and impact her and her teammates, so it'll be interesting to see how they make things mesh.

It is interesting and I think unfortunate that while Dark Phoenix is still pretty widely loved by the fans, considered one of the best X-Men stories, the fans don't give Byrne a lot of credit or appreciation for it.

More understandably, they're also not interested in watching a movie adaptation by the same screenwriter who wrote the last film adaptation of it which was at least very disappointing.

According to the hivemind, it is. What are those reasons again? If they're anything like "I don't want to see Magneto" I don't expect to be particularly impressed.

No, the point is

My point was what it was.

they would actually offer real dramatic possibilities.

You mean like the dramatic possibility of horsemen turning against Apocalypse because of not being one-note villains?
