The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

We don't know what the tone of X-Force will be. Being a sequel to or offshoot of Deadpool 2 doesn't/wouldn't require "aping" the tone of that film.

Yeah, but Deadpool isn't going to be in a completely serious film. Sure, I doubt characters like cable will be breaking the fourth wall, but its still going to be a fairly humorous film if it includes Deadpool, much more then the average X-film.

Its a assumption that makes sense. I mean, this is FOX. They might be incompetent enough to put a comedy character in some completely serious film, but I doubt it. X-Force itself makes more sense as an action movie anyway, so while it might not be a comedy (although it could easily be if they treat it like a Deadpool spin off) its probably at least going to be an action film with a lot of comedy.

I'm going to have to side with Kirk here (wow this must be a sign of the end of the world), it would seem highly unlikely that they would put a character like Deadpool in a completely serious movie. Deadpool is already established as a very comedic character in his own movie, and I can't see them going against that characterization in X Force. Even if the other characters aren't constantly cracking jokes, I'm pretty sure he will be. I just can't see them alienating fans of the Deadpool movie by totally changing his characterization.

Jessica Chastain has announced on Twitter that, despite what was originally reported, she is not playing Lilandra in Dark Phoenix.

I am looking forward to Dark Phoenix to see how the characters moved forward in time another ten years while barely aging, again.

Jessica Chastain said she wasn't playing Lilandra in an Instagram comment (which she has since deleted), not on Twitter.

In light of this news about there having been talked between FOX and Disney about the former selling their film and television divisions to the latter and the potential implications that such a scenario might present for the XMCU, I stumbled across this article from Screenrant that I wanted to share:
15 Reasons The X-Men Universe Is Better Than The MCU

While some of their arguments are either based on misconceptions or contain factual errors, I do agree with most of their points, and would much rather see the XMCU - which, in spite of its lesser overall output - has been going on - without a reset in continuity - for nearly twice as long as the MCU and is currently the longest-running superhero film franchise in history.

Build on the continuity. Hell, explain away some of the discontinuity (damn Nathaniel Essex and his time travelling clones).

The X-Men universe both has an end date (when every single mutant hero worldwide, from beast to Nightcrawler and presumably including Deadpool, Cable, and their friends
dies magically when they all simultaneously travel to New York right when Xavier loses his marbles because he can't kill people worldwide so dozens of heroic mutants must have been right next to him
), and a completely broken continuity in the middle. It would benefit from its current continuity getting thrown out (outside of Deadpool, he could fit with a new continuity with no changes) and starting fresh.

No "focus on one actor above all else", no weird "We have to retcon things every damn movie because we keep randomly changing crap for no reason". A cohesive X-Men universe with a possible future and a clear past/present is desperately needed, and Marvel using them is the best option in my opinion.

I so hope they do right by the story. And by doing right, I don't necessarily mean a beat by beat adaptation, just something that gets the characters and the emotions and the consequences right. I don't necessarily think that they should kill Jean again, especially since it's been done twice and we've already seen adult Jean in the altered timeline, but Mystique or Magneto are both prime targets, as neither were seen in the new future timeline. My money would be on Mystique, simply because there's nowhere else for her character arc to go.

I know, right? It's been just under 30 years since First Class! Mystique can get away with it 'cuz she can shapeshift herself to look any age she wants, and all McAvoy needs is some crow's feet eyes and a slightly saggy chin. But at only eight years to go now before the original (timeline) film, Fassbender really should be starting to look a bit grey and craggy by now.

Apparently this week's Entertainment Weekly is going to have a story on Dark Phoenix, so a bunch of stuff is starting topop up online.

Mystique seems like the most likely candidate for the death, since we already know that Jennifer Lawarence doesn't want to play Mystique anymore. Unless the funeral is just because they think Jean is dead, and she shows back up later as The Phoenix.

Is Jessica Chastain playing a Skrull?
I can see where the Skrull thing could be likely since her character is described as an "other worldly shapeshifter". It would be ironic if we ended up with another Quicksilver situation with both Marvel Studios and Fox introducing the same thing from the comics within just a few movies of each other. After how different their two Quicksilvers were, I have to wonder how different their Skrulls would be.

Jennifer Lawrence came back for Dark Phoenix because she wanted Kinberg to direct and he would only do it if she was in it.

It's interesting to me that the concept of Phoenix has gone in different creative directions, as the idea of it being an alien entity that bonds with hosts is sort of more of a retcon than what Chris Claremont had intended (that Phoenix would be Jean's abilities boosted up to a Power Cosmic level, and that this would make her the X-Men's counterpart to Thor essentially).

Seeing how this is basically the end of the FoX-Men series, I wonder if they'll rewrite the ending to give a sense of real closure this time around.

^ It's already been confirmed that we'll be seeing the release of New Mutants, Deadpool 2, Dark Phoenix, and Gambit, even if/when this Disney/FOX deal goes through, so you are wrong.
