The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

Who cares if the adaptation is 100% accurate to the source, as long as it's good in its own right?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but how do Legion and the new show The Gifted (which references X-Men in the commercial) relate to the movies (if at all), or even each other (if at all)?

Are they not from the same production company (Fox)?
Gifted is explicitly set in the X-Men movieverse, but Legion is it's own thing (even if they have Stewart or McAvoy as Xavier one day, as has been discussed)

But I think you can pretend Legion is part of the movieverse if you want - I think the biggest issue would be timing of events (and nailing down exactly when Legion is set, which is kept vague), but the Days of Future Past timeline reset has magically changed characters' ages and the timing of events so... why not?

Legion is most certainly in the X-Men universe, and the producer has said he's open to either McAvoy or Stewart appearing as Xavier in the show -- and Stewart has said he's happy to do it. Wouldn't be surprised to see him show up in the second season.
Didn't he just say that casusally on a chat show though? (Graham Norton IIRC)
To be fair the original 6 Avengers actors all casually said "er, yeah sure" when Clark Gregg asked them on Jimmy Kimmel to be in Agents of Shield. Haha pretty sure that'll never happen

Not on Graham Norton, but James Corden, but otherwise, yes, it was a pretty casual moment. Could go either way but I wouldn't be surprised if Stewart (or McAvoy) doesn't appear.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind that either. I think it's inevitable that Xavier will appear (especially considering the heavy hints in the first season), but at the same time, Noah Hawley said he isn't in a hurry to feature the character.

Who even ever says this? The script writers certainly haven't.
I wasn't talking about Dark Pheonix, just adaptions in general. I tend to think of things like the MCU movies, and other looser adaptation as being "inspired by -----" rather than an adaptation of it.

I don't actually, something can be an "adaptation" of something and still be a great movie, I just prefer they make it clear it's not a direct adaptation of the story. When I go to watch something that is supposed to be a direct adaptation of something else and it ends up having nothing to do with, I feel like I've been lied to. And yes, I know all adaptations change things, and that's fine, but even with the changes it should still be recognizable.

It didn't, really. It looked like that was what they were doing with Angel and Deadpool, but as it turned out the two Angels have really nothing to connect them at all except they both have wings and the two Deadpools are such massively different characters that they could never have been the same person anyway. Ie, they were just plain retcons, with no logical connection to the timeline reset at all. And isn't the whole point of time travel to change the timing of events? (As well as the occurence of them, of course)

"Bumping" this thread to bring in talk about the recently-revealed information about Storm and Logan's romance.

I think it will be fun and interesting to rewatch the series looking for onscreen clues/cues to support/validate this info, but I think there's something about the reveal that is getting overlooked that I think interesting and neat: it subtly confirms/reveals that the events of X1 and X2 weren't as close together as we think/thought they were.

Hadn't seen this till you posted. Isn't she just talking about that deleted scene on the DOFP blu ray? Which felt like it was inspired the Wolverine-Storm romance in the 90s animated series alternate timeline episodes One Man's Worth pts1&2. Bryan Singer watched it all so maybe, just guessing

She does reference that scene, but she's also talking about the series as a whole, and the internal backstory that she and Hugh adopted for their characters to explain the context of that scene. She also specifically says that the romance between the characters happened BEFORE Logan fell for Jean, which really happens in earnest in X2, meaning that, for however long it lasted, Logan and Storm's relationship occurred between X1 and X2 (which means there had to have been more time between them than we think/thought)... and was possibly rekindled sometime between 2013 and 2023 in the original timeline (hence the goodbye kiss depicted in that scene).

Speaking of DOFP and animated X-Men actually, I rewatched all of Wolverine & the X-Men again a couple of weeks ago. There's a scene in one of the last few episodes where Magneto dissambles a Sentinel, reprograms it, and puts it all back together, so instead of targetting mutants it will target humans. Almost exactly like that part in DOFP.

I just wondered if that was maybe inspired by said episode, or is it taken from a comic perhaps

That was from Ultimate X-Men, the last part of the first story arc. So way back in 2001.

And the X-Men Arcade game had Magneto controlling an army of Sentinels too.

I wonder if they'll go with Deadpool's casting and have Brolin as Cable. But, maybe they don't want to connect a more serious movie with Deadpool?

Personally, I hope most of what I consider the "core" members from the part of the old X-Force run I liked make it:

Cable
Domino
Shatterstar
Siryn
Boom Boom
Warpath

I'd also like Cannonball but he's New Mutants exclusive I'm assuming. I actually liked a good part of the first X-Force run once Liefeld was gone, so I hope they're influenced by that more then the more modern X-Force groups.

Variety's article flat-out says that Deadpool and Cable will be leading the X-Force team in the film, so it's likely going to be a sequel to or offshoot from Deadpool 2.

Well that's good. I mean, a more serious film done well could be very good, but more Deadpool is always a good thing.

We don't know what the tone of X-Force will be. Being a sequel to or offshoot of Deadpool 2 doesn't/wouldn't require "aping" the tone of that film.
