The Wrath of Khan Directors Cut Vs. Theatrical Cut, Differences?

Pretty much the only diference between the "ABC' version and the DVD D.C. is the lift scene--along with with the excision of of the word 'God damn' and the close-ups of the eel entrance & exit---as was pointed out previously.

For all intents they are the same, and no way that the P & S version of the lift scene would be in the widescreen version of the movie.

After the first 1985 showing of the 'ABC' version I never had any use for the theatrical.

6 of the 8 DC reinsertions were very nice family moments by the main cast.

Kirk & McCoy--glasses
Kirk, Peter & Scotty--nephew info
Spock / McCoy---debating
Kirk, McCoy & Scott----sickbay
Kirk / Spock----'that's my son'
Kirk, Spock & Saavik----'human ego'

That's exactly the kind of stuff I WANT to see in my Trek movie.

"He's an ugly mother-fu......."
"Shut your mouth!"
"But I'm talkin' 'bout SHAS !"
" Yo' damn right !"

^ Those ARE in the DVD DC. That's the bit I called the Spock/ McCoy 'debate' after the Genesis tape.

"Are you by any chance in favor of these experiments?"
"Gentlemen, gentlemen......" etc.

^No there weren't.

Check the shooting script--there are no lines cut from after the genesis tape---except those that are now in the DC, that I mentioned.

After Saavik interupts the discussion with news of Reliant's approach, Kirk mentions that "Chekov's on Reliant!" (in the script) But that line was NEVER included in the ABC version.

I compared my VHS tape of the ABC cut to the DC after the DC came out and after i was staisfied there were no differences I tossed it. Regretably I didn't think I'd have any use for the alternate 'lift scene' since I preferrred the widescreen version.

For over 3 years I have asked anybody who still has the ABC version on tape to post shots of the alternate 'lift scene' and nobody has them.

Do YOU by any chance, have it on tape? If so, please check your copy and see what those phantom lines consist of.

And anybody else who has it on tape please list any changes you can find between the two. Thanks if you do.

There have also been many (over 5) posters who swear the Romulan heritage scene was in the ABC cut, but I watched it at least 25 times between 1985 and 2002 and it sure as hell was never in there.

I hope this clearer
The tape becomes snowy and blinks off.
Kirk looks at Bones and Spock -- they are stunned.
SPOCK It literally is Genesis...

KIRK The power of creation --

SPOCK Have they proceeded with their experiments?

KIRK The tape was made a year ago. I can only assume they've reached Phase Two by now --

BONES But dear Lord, are we intelligent enough to -- Suppose, this thing were used where life already exists?

SPOCK It would destroy such life in favor of its new matrix --

BONES It's new (matrix) -- have you any idea what you're saying?

SPOCK I was not attempting to evaluate its moral implications, Doctor. As a matter of cosmic history, it has always been easier to destroy than to create --

BONES Not anymore! Now you can do both at the same time! According to myth, the earth was created in six days. (Now) Watch out: here comes Genesis; we'll do it for you in six minutes --

SPOCK I don't dispute that in the wrong hands -

BONES Would you like to tell me whose are the right hands, my (logical) cold-blooded friend? Are you in favor of these experiments?

KIRK (Gentlemen) Gentlemen, this isn't --

SPOCK Really, Dr. McCoy; you cannot ban the acquisition of knowledge because you distrust the moral
implications of what you learn. (Really Dr you must learn to govern your passions--they will be your undoing)Logic suggests -

BONES Logic??(The man's talking about logic!) We're talking about universal Armageddon, you (green-blooded) inhuman
bloodless...

SAAVIK'S VOICE (intercom)urier] Admiral, sensors indicate a vessel in our area, closing fast.

KIRK What do you make of her?

SAAVIK'S VOICE It's one of ours, Admiral... It's Reliant.

SPOCK (Reliant!) What's she doing here?

KIRK Chekov's on Reliant, isn't he?

I've added where in the actual movie they either added or replaced dialogue, from memory so I may be off on a word or two.

I can't muscle through all that, but this stood out to me:

In the ABC version, McCoy repeats the line "In the wrong hands??" incredulously. And I'm pretty sure he said "logical," not "cold-blooded."

I do have it. Many years ago I made my own cut - it was the letterboxed theatrical version from a commercial VHS, plus I spliced in the scenes from the ABC version. In creating that splice I came to know the ABC version very well. I won't have time to check it today, but will try to get to it over the weekend.

And the Romulan bit was definitely not in the ABC version.

^ I removed all that font business and added in where they had replaced or added words and lines (while leaving in the lines as scripted.)
Also, all those changes are in all three versions of the movie (except where the theatrical didn't have the ABC/ DC added lines of course.)

So is what you are saying that the additional line(s) you're talking about is/are McCoy repeating the line,

"In the wrong hands?" ---a second time?

If so that's fairly minor and likely just an alternate take. For example, in the famous 'Showwest trailer that contains the 'Romulan heritage' scene there are a number of alternate takes/readings of lines--including the famous 'Gamma HEE-dra' pronouncation by Alley.

It's possible that Meyer--when he assembled the DC in 2002---took a preferred 'take' of post-tape exchange. But it seems that we got all of the lines from that scene with the exception of the "Chekov's on Reliant" & "What's she doing here?" scene finale bit. Too bad about those deletions IMO

Those two lines, the Romulan heritage bit and Terrell checking the air in the cargo container before they remove their helmets are little bits I wish Meyer had added back in that would have only taken less than 45 seconds altogether.

Hope you find your 'ABC' copy and it'd fantastic if you could post a couple of shots of the alternate lift scene !!

No kidding?

Actually I thought the second post HAD removed the fonts thing but it hadn't. Finally got them removed from the second post.

There's only one thing I miss about the theatrical cut, and it's really picky. I really liked the inflection Kelley put into McCoy's line at the end of the engineering scene-- "Admiral, what about the rest of the inspection?" It made Kirk's silent response seem a lot funnier. The extended version uses a different take, and the line doesn't stand out nearly as much.

Overall, though, I really like having the added segments in the director's cut.

Totally, that line is awesome. The take in the DC isn't very good. Actually, if you listen carefully I think there is ADR on the original line by Kelley, but it's still much better than the new version.

Having said that, I prefer the original cut. Having seen the film so many times, the alternate cuts bounce me out of the movie.

The climbing ladder "That young man is my son" scene is good, but I don't see the need for much else.

Well, I ve seen the DC 10 times as often as the theatrical and NOT HAVING those scenes bounces me out of the movie.

I guess I'm extra glad I had the ABC version on tape for all those years.

The Saavik is Rom exchange was broadcast on television, but not in the context of the film. CREATURE FEATURES had ILM's Ken Ralston on in 82 and he brought some eels and a tiny RELIANT and some film clips, and one of them was that exchange.

I do have it here... somewhere...

No, the "She's half-Romulan, Jim" line appears in what is known as the Media ShoWest Convention Presentation Reel, a specially produced long trailer (3 min. 24 sec.) that was screened at that convention. It's narrated by William Shatner ("Here're some scenes from a little film we've very proud of...", IIRC).

The reel also has temp music, Saavik mispronouncing "Gamma Hydra" (Heedra) and "Ceti Alpha" (Seeti), and Saavik with her hair down during the scenes in the Genesis Cave:

I once Googled it and found a good zip file copy on someone's website. There is a portion of the reel on a different Youtube clip, I just noticed. It's missing Shatner's opening narration and "Gamma Heedra":

I still think that they should have kept the Romulan heritage scene.:klingon:
