The Whispers

I'm trying to remember the Whispers that don't entirely make sense in context of the Others. They seem to have knowledge that they shouldn't have, but I'm not entirely sure they shouldn't have it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Others know about the guy Sawyer killed in Australia? I seem to remember Ben mentioning it or something.

The most logical rationale these days would be for Smokey or Jacob to be causing it, since they seem to have the supernatural force people once associated with The Others. But who knows?

... following that train of thought ...

Ben said that Jacob never "deigned" to speak to him. So, how did Jacob inform Ben of these events?

Same thing with the lists - how did Ben get the lists?

If Richard was the go-between, between Jacob and Ben, why wasn't Richard the leader?

Richard probably wasn't allowed to be the leader (condition of being immortal, I would imagine). He could be a go-between and advisor, but not actually lead.

If you play the whispers backwards, they say "Locke is dead. Locke is dead." :p

Case in point: I had to pause and post this topic because Sawyer just heard whispering, and the only clearly understandable phrase was "It'll come back around," which anyone who's seen the ep before knows is what Duckett says to Sawyer right before he (Duckett) dies later in the episode's flashbacks.
If it's never explained, I'm just going to assume Sawyer was just hearing things in the whispers.
