Spoilers The Walking Dead - Season 9 discussion and spoilers

This isn't an answer.

You keep saying there's something deficient about the current episodes of TWD, and you've been asked twice about what those deficiencies are, but all we get is "It's not as good anymore" and "I'd end it." Why is it not as good anymore? Why is cancellation the only remedy? What are the showrunners doing wrong?

It's maudlin and dull. The question has been answered.

So you want a peppy zombie apocalypse? Again there's always Z-Nation.

Every episode is constant navel gazing set to a dreary soundtrack. If you like that good for you. I don't. I've given it years to improve and it hasn't. This is the show now.

Not to put words in your mouth but I think your saying that the concept has been milked out and their is nothing left to do with that concept or these characters that is interesting. It isn't just that the show has gotten bad but the potential for future greatness no longer exists because it's been played out in so many different way that their is no hope left for it to ever, improve. Am I wrong?

You're correct. It's run it's course. It happens to every show eventually. Even TNG took a dive in the last season.

TNG took a dive long before its final season, and carried that over to the TNG movies.

Don't tell that to the TNG writers. I have read how many of them consider season 6 the best season of the show. Which I don't but I think it's pretty good IMO. I think season 7 is when they simply ran of any more good idea's or maybe they missed Pillar's presence or the better idea's were going to DS9. I find it interesting that "DS9" got the more fun stuff with "The Maquis" even though you would think you would want "TNG" to really sale them, more since it was the show with the better ratings and thus in theory would help "Voyager" more when it got started.

The Maquis storyline was one of Trek's few (only?) attempts at a crossover story. The whole thing was first set up on TNG with Journey's End establishing the colonies and the DMZ between Federation and Cardassian space, the gets picked up on DS9 with The Maquis two-parter, and then we get the Maquis appearing on TNG in Preemptive Strike. All this was done as set-up for Voyager, though DS9 would continue to do its own Maquis storylines.

I know but it seems like during that season 2 of Ds9 and season 7 of TNG, DS9 actually got the better end out of the deal. The Maquis situations was set up but DS9 got show them in action for the first time. Plus you got some drama from them when "O"Brien was put on Cardissian trial. TNG had two, so-so episodes. DS9's got the more interesting storytelling from it which of course pays off more down the line even more with Edington and before him the Thomas RIker, episode. Heck I would say The Maquis were even better used on DS9 than Voyager which is why they were they were created in the first place. Plus I feel that they were the first real swipe at Federation concepts on the show, which lead later to the Dominion War and then Section 31.

I finally watched last weekend's episode today, and the resolution to who was killing the Saviors was not what I expected. It didn't even occur to me that it would be the Oceansiders.
I'm not sure how to feel about Maggie and Daryl walking away. I definitely understand the Oceansiders wanting their revenge and Maggie and Daryl letting them take it, but it does go completely against everything Rick set up.
I have to wonder if maybe their should have been at least a bit more punishment for the Saviors. The Saviors did some pretty brutal stuff, and I can see where some people in this world could feel like they're basically getting away with it with nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

Most of the really brutal Saviors were already dealt with. Negen's in prison, Simon's been killed and his zombie is chained to Sanctuary's fence. Likewise, Simon's loyalists who were with him when he killed the Heapsters were all killed. Dwight's in exile, with possibly everyone else believing he's been executed. The only one of Negen's top Lieutenants who is still around is Regina, who aside from attempting to kill Eugene in response to his betrayal has never seemed particularly evil. I guess there's also Laura, though it was her idea to surrender to Rick and the Gang, and so far she seems to be making a genuine effort to establishing smooth relations. Indeed, Daryl actually apologised after he snapped at her in the premiere, so she must be doing something right. Even among the rank and file Saviors, the only one who truly seemed a genuine threat last season was that one who had a grudge with Morgan, and he's dead now.

The Walking Dead
Season 9 / episode 4 - "The Obliged"

Rick & Michonne: As expected, more of the Happy Grimes Life has the spotlight in anticipation of....

I love that the series still has Michonne--three season and running--being the steady force for creating a positive new society (which Deanna recognized in her), instead of Maggie's "Negan-light" way of running a community.

She's such a tough character, and absolutely fearless in her conversation with Negan. Even trying to use her sons against her. Yes, she said sons, so she did see Carl as her own, much as she considers Judith her daughter, which was sweet.

Negan can make whatever bizarre connections between his late wife and that baseball bat, but his attachment to it is simply...unhinged to say the least. If Rick dies, a betting man would think she will keep Negan alive to carry on Rick's mission, but I see Negan escaping--and Michonne waiting it out, possibly to eliminate him--and another main character...

Nice moment between Rick and Eugene. He did deserve credit for all he's done--including being the original inspiration for leaving Atlanta.

Rick impaled and facing a herd...that was a tough scene to watch.

Daryl: Although his debate with Rick was fascinating and revealing about what each thinks of the other,(the "brother" moments), he cannot just get a free pass to "turn the page" after something bad happens thanks to his constant backstabbing.

Jadis / Ann & Father Gabriel: In just a couple of scenes, this season's most unexpected pairing is the most "must see" in a sea of compelling plots.

NOTES: This is growth: a season four episodes in and its all about the depth of character. TWD has not enjoyed this level of concentration of important relationships since seasons 2 & 3.

Best episode in several years BUT...

"The Famous" Rick Grimes was killed by a damn horse, and now we get a whole episode of dream sequence where it looks like he saves the day, but then wakes up impaled where we left him this week, being eaten? THIS is the glorious death they came up with?

Hey, the writers obviously liked the Terry Gilliam film "Brazil". ;)

I'm not sure he's still there, but actually escapes, only to meet his end elsewhere. After all, this is the same show were Daryl pulled an arrow out of his side, Hershel survived a dirty amputation in an equally dirty prison floor, Morgan (on FTWD) suffered how many bad leg injuries? ...and Carol (and Daryl) walked away from a van falling off of a freeway overpass.

Anything is possible.

I'm basing my theory on what we saw in the trailer. It's also possible that Rick hallucinates a bit, wakes up in time and leads the herd to the bridge. Bridge collapses, here dies and so does Rick. Not really much better, since technically he'll still have been killed by a horse.

Coincidence that it was a white horse? As in a pale, white horse?

It would be fitting, since if it weren't for Glenn, he would have essentially been killed by a horse back in Atlanta.

Michonne is going to be joining Negan soon. It's basically telegraphed. Not sure where people are getting her showing strength. The moment she talked to Negan she was done for.

OK, I forgot that most of that had happened.

I don't know, it looks to me like he's gets away and is leading the herd away from everyone else. So I think it looks like next week will be just him (and the horse) leading the herd away while he's slowly dying. I'd say it's still pretty heroic since it looks like he's going to be sacrificing himself in order to lead the herd away and protect everyone else.

This was another great episode.
Loved the stuff with Rick and Daryl in the hole, that great character stuff for both of them.
Negan and Michonne's stuff was really good too, and I love her reactions to the baseball bat and the picture in the book. The stuff with Negan has given them a whole new meaning now.
The set up for Rick's death next week was not at all what I expected.
I really hope he at least survives long enough to make it back to Alexandria or if not, that either someone finds his body or that he dies on the horse it takes him back. I think it'd really be a shame if we didn't get some kind of farewell scenes with character like Michonne and Daryl.
