Spoilers The Walking Dead - Season 9 discussion and spoilers

As we move further away from there great episode, my good feelings about this show are completely gone. I still think it's barreling right toward cancellation.
Except given what AMC Execs have said, such cancellation is still a decade away - IE they're going to ride this franchise into the ground until it is a Zombie of itself. ;)

You continue to spell doom for the show, yet there's no evidence to support your position. On Talking Dead, Gimple--of all people--gave the series the biggest infusion of fan interest since the announcement of Negan finally coming to the series to years ago. The series is pulling in large numbers and making money, hence the reason AMC is expanding the franchise.

Since genre shows are brought up for comparisons in WD treads, there are other fantasy series that truly have low ratings and probably need to be cancelled long before anyone seriously sees TWD in that way.

It's all about trends. The Walking Dead went from 17 million viewers to 4 million in an unbelievable 2 years! A similar percentage of viewer loss will take the show to the ~1 million range, which is on the borderline of cancelation. The decision to expand the universe certainly happened some time ago, perhaps when Walking Dead was being watched by ~12 million. Nobody expected that the addition of Negan would make the show lose 75% of its viewers.

Regardless of what happens, TWD's place in history is cemented. It will always be remembered as one of the most successful genre shows of all time. I just wish that it would be able to go out with SOME kind of bang, instead of the whimper they are clearly driving it toward.

It's kind of funny, a couple weeks ago I had a dream, serving as a "prediction" of how things would "end" with Rick and in it there was Jadis with the Helicopter People saying she could fly Rick away to "save" him but he could never come back.

Could someone tell me what the Commonwealth is suppose to be about? My guess just going off the name and the few things I have seen is that it's a group that is trying to bring back the old world in some fashion as in the tech and way of life. Basically a bigger scale version of what the Congress lady was doing with Alexandria and even the Governor with his town but on a larger scale that expands beyond the borders of one state and even country and might go into Mexico and Canada and maybe even overseas. It's got hold of lots of old world tech. Maybe more so than any group we have seen to date. Is my theory way off?

The Commonwealth is a community of nearly 50 000 people which has managed to maintain a similar lifestyle to pre-apocalyptic times run by a Governor (an actual Governor, who was a politician in the old world). I don't remember if they state where it's located, but a lot of its citizens seem to be from midwestern states.

The main problem concerning the Commonwealth is they stick too closely to the ways of pre-apocalyptic life, to the point that it's leadership and respected citizenry are people who had wealth, power and fame in the old world while everyone else, including people with skills that are more practical to surviving a post zombie apocalypse world are treated as commoners and disrespected. EG, one of the militia men who is tasked with being the bodyguard of the Governor's teenage son is routinely verbally abused by the boy who threatens to have him fired if he doesn't get his way, and this is tolerated because it's what is expected. Indeed, the only one from Rick and the Gang who is even allowed an audience with the Commonwealth's senior leadership is Michonne because in the old world she was a lawyer with a very prestigious law firm, in other words, a person in their eyes. Everyone else is too common to be bothered with.

I've wondered about that, too. In a world with such a high body count, not everybody we know could have survived those six years-- plus, people we've never met should have risen to prominence.
I doubt they'll kill off any more major regular characters, but I could see a few of the minor recurring characters not being around anymore. If they do that, I just hope Jerry isn't one of them, he's one of my favorite character. If Enid hadn't been promoted to regular and made a doctor, I'd have suspected she'd be one to go, but the actress's promotion and character's new job probably mean she's safe.

Jerry dies and we riot!

Quite the contrary, a common trope on Walking Dead is that the doctors are always killed. Pete the Porch Dick, Denise, both Dr. Carsons.

There is Siddiq...so either him or Enid is next.

And I am with the rioters if Jerry dies.

I hope the big kid Judith timeline is a flashforward....seems kinda dumb to go that much ahead in terms of a season...awesome for an episode ender, but not for more than that.

Will they maybe switch between Whisperers and Commonwealth?

It was cool to hear about the movies...but how will that work? And will it truly work?

Quick question on ratings...does it take into account delayed DVR viewings and/or AMC Premiere? If they got a million subscriptions...that could be better than 3 million live viewer???

I was actually riveted by this episode. Like others I assume, I had only been half paying attention to the series for a while now. Doing other things as the show played in the background just to catch the beats of the story. For the first time in a long time, the series faked me out with Rick's death scene. I can't believe that Rick or Maggie will not be returning to the series. That leaves one original character left now? Surely these announced movies must just be leading to a return of Rick at some point?

Same day delayed views count as live views. Views within 3 days count for less, and then 5 days count for even less. AMC premiere doesn't count as far as the Nielsen numbers are concerned, but obviously AMC cares about them.

Actually two. Darryl and Carol and I just now noticed their names rhyme. How did I never notice this before. After them the oldest lived character I believe Michonne and later that season Eugene and Rosita from season 3. Well Judith as well but babies don't count.

...but they were not major characters. Enid went from recurring character to one of the leads. That, and her history with Carl, Glenn and Maggie made her too important to kill off--at least for the time being.

Actually, Eugene and Rosita were introduced at the end of 4B's premiere episode ("After").

Well Judith as well but babies don't count.

Regarding Judith, well, she's a major character that has been on the show since early season 3 (Ep.4 - "Killer Within"), and whether she was a newborn, toddler or older child, she was important to the development of the Grimes clan.

So, Rick and Michonne do have a child!

Interesting episode, the time jump is certainly making things more interesting. Liked this "version" of Negan, he seems to have come back down to "reality" somewhat, Little Ass Kicker is great, new characters are kind of interesting. See where it goes. I'm surprised we didn't see the "Three Questions" played during the "hearing."

Gabriel and Rosita?!

And, Carol, show? That wasn't a strike-anywhere match.

The Walking Dead
Season 9 / episode 6- "Who Are You Now?"

Michonne and Judith: Setting the right tone; six years later, Michonne is still dedicated to Rick and his ideas. The first impression is that her carrying the torch is a way of telling the audience that she will have her reunion with Rick, thought the franchise will take the long way of getting there..

Great to see the new Judith, but her optimism has opened the door to the worst, of course. So far, she more trusting than her brother was in his early ZA years (recall how Carl behaved in seasons 2 & 3).

Loved
the brief training scene between mother and daughter.

Sweet moment between Michonne and Judith about what Rick and Carl would do with Magna's group. A small detail that rang true was Judith saying she's forgetting how Rick and Carl's voices sounded; for a child her age, that's not uncommon.

Judith established some sort of rapport with Negan....I hope tis does not lead to her being the reason Negan escapes, either by her own actions, or by leading others to do it.

Finally, two major things--Michonne & Rick's son!

...and the "X" carved into Michonne's back...there has to be a great story behind that....

Carol and Ezekiel: So Henry has been adopted by Carol and Ezekiel...but he's a bit disrespectful. Curious about where that will lead the boy in the Whisperer plot.

The expression on Carol's face after handing over her ring said it all about the fate of the ex-Saviors. More on that group later...

Magna / Connie / Kelly / Yumiko and Luke: Magna is such an asshole that it seems like a no-brainer that no one should trust her or her companions, each heavy on the theatrics and string-pulling. But the heroes--in the face of their suspicious--drop their guard. Yep, that's the SMH moment of the episode.

Rosita and Father Gabriel: The Eugene/Rosita relationship predictions crumble. Initially, I only suspected there was the potential for a deeper friendship between Father Gabriel and Rosita since he was so supportive / protective of her in the wake of Abraham's death, but not a romance. Once again, Gabriel ends up in another unexpected relationship, but its an interesting turn of events.

...however, Eugene's attempted (and far too late) bogarting into Rosita's relationship (and he's still on his atheism hang-up where Gabriel is concerned) was low down. Here's hoping Rosita never leans in his direction.

Laura:
On the council. She's come a long way.

Ex-Saviors: Wait--in five years, they're still hovering around the general area? The episode did not establish how long the Sanctuary lasted with no help from the other communities, but one would assume the survivors would have moved on if they found it impossible to grow food there and/or picked the region clean of any food stocks...

NOTES:
Strong set-up to so many plot avenues--from Michonne & Judith, to Negan, Rosita, Henry, Carol, and Magna's group, it all seems like the best is yet to come.

..and yes, the references to death, and Carol removing her wedding ring points to the future of a certain king...

The Whisperer herd were wearing black wigs.

Just a few things:

-So now Henry's a whiny teenager. You know what I couldn't stand about FTWD? The whiny teenagers. THANKS A BUNCH, TWD!

-Well, I'm glad being a queen and sporting Earth-mother locks hasn't taken away Carol's natural badassery. (Burn, mutha*****, burn!)

-"I have my Daddy's gun and my Mommy's sword and my brudda's hat...and I'm super cute when I shoot walkers!" AAWWWWWWWW!

-Did Negan have to get all philosophical with the girl? Couldn't he just admit he couldn't solve a simple algebra problem?

-Um, when did Michonne become the World's Greatest Detective?

-Jadis, then Rosita? Preacher's got game.

-Well, maybe Eugene won't get the girl, but it seems like he's no longer a pants wetting coward...mostly.

I'm in at least until we see how time has treated Maggie.
