Yeah, I'm thinking it's probably more about Whiskey Cavalier being canceled. It can't be a coincidence that she's coming back the next season right after that ended.

Yes--Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus are the last of the 1st season cast left. Both made their debut in "Tell it to the Frogs"--the third episode.
I'm not surprised about the renewal, but it's always good to hear the official word. The return of Maggie is also good news. They'll need her with Michonne leaving.
Unless we count Rick and Morgan who are still around just not on that show. Jason

Thing is, there was a rumour back in the winter that she was offered the raise she was requesting to come back for the start of season 10, which she declined being unsure about Whiskey Cavalier's fate. The implication I took is AMC wants Cohan back badly, so I suspect they have given her the raise she wants.
The wording seems to be vague. One possible interpretation is that she's only in a part of this season, and will be there for the whole thing in season 11. Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if Maggie returns after Michonne leaves, with Lauren Cohan taking over the vacant spot in the opening credits Danai Gurira will leave.
IIRC, there was a deleted scene establishing they all died.

Season 10 - Episode 1 - "Lines We Cross" - SEASON PREMIERE
10 seasons--10 years of what must be the most significant fantasy TV series of this century. It was certainly unprecedented, and outside of comic book readers, no one thought the idea of a zombie TV series would work, let alone become a pop culture phenomenon with general audiences. That's rare for fantasy TV of any era. The series has suffered from low/rough points from time to time, but it continues to roll on, while other fantasy series have come and gone in the same time, or limp on from anemic ratings never really getting a hold on the culture in the way of TWD.
Michonne / Judith: Good that Michonne straightened out Aaron about being good; he was playing the ever-doomed moral relativism game with his idea that they might be the villains of someone else's story. Really? So ASZ's residents were "villains" to the Wolves or the Saviors? Nonsense.
As always, Judith is the great breakout character of recent seasons; she's wise beyond her years in wanting to preserve family history for the sake of her brother, and it was sweet the way she told Rick's story, and capped it off with her own belief that he went to Heaven (so Michonne and/or Gabriel is teaching the word to Judith & R.J.). One can only imagine how she will react when she learns he's still alive.
Daryl: He makes a passing reference to Maggie, but the key moment was his thought about hitting the road, looking for a better place. In the WD TV universe, characters talking about options for their future usually places their heads on the chopping block. No one believes Daryl will ever be "that guy," but the dialogue was moving into the "hope" zone, and that's never a good thing on TWD.
Lydia: I do not like Negan playing with her mind with his "watch your back" string pulling, but it must be easy to do since she's still not trusted so long after the events of last season. Rather sad that her mother took a deep dive into her rejection of the old world that she did not teach Lydia how to read.
Carol: Taking long trips to free her mind of last season's losses is a good idea, but Daryl suspecting she was looking for Alpha is believable. She's sort of in the same place Michonne was in between season 3 and 4 when she searched for The Governor.
Ezekiel: Some sort of respiratory problem before being exposed to the smoke...?
Father Gabriel / Rosita: Interesting dynamic between Gabriel and Negan; the former is not gullible when it comes to Negan's advice and predictions, but he sees some kernels of truth beneath the act.
The entire Siddiq-as-the-father business is too complicated, and of all of the men in Rosita's life, Siddiq is comes off as a forced (by circumstance) distraction.
Alpha / Beta / Whisperers: Alpha lurking around the borders--or crossing it. Her stare-off with Carol is what fans were waiting for as a set up to Carol getting revenge for Henry, but I think someone else will end up killing Alpha.
Connie / Luke / Magna / Yumiko / Kelly: Kelly starting to lose her hearing. For someone to lose a sense after the ZA began must be frightening
Siddiq: Still conflicted over his role (?) in Alpha's attack....
I never bought the social media theories that he sold out his companions to save himself, but his behavior plays like something more than survivor's guilt....
Eugene: I know he "loves" Rosita (and trying to play surrogate father), but by now, he should have let that go. Hell, Laura (the ex-Savior) is still around and sort of appealing.... All he needs to do is talk...
Negan: Still trying to find his place in the community...a place to exploit.
NOTES: Promising opening.
The shipwreck scene: at long last, the living have created effective offense/defense to large numbers of walkers. It does beg the question why the heroes' resident star archer and swordsperson never trained anyone else in the past (aside from Daryl briefly teaching Beth to use the crossbow in 4B, and Judith with her own katana in recent years). Seeing Aaron with the shield line reminded me of what a different kind of survivor he was when Deanna ran the Alexandria Safe Zone. I seriously doubt her family (and just about everyone in that community) would have survived this long.
The humans now fight like an army, and if that's not a preview of wars to come (not just with the Whisperers), I don't know what is.
So, some 10 years into the ZA(?), a satellite finally falls...

Solid opening episode. Though most stuff in this episode is stuff we already knew from the trailers and/or other promotional material, I'm actually okay with that since in many ways this episode is basically just a reunion and catching up with our friends before Shit Gets Real. Though, I see the internet reports exaggerated the forest fire story, making the fire itself sound like it was going to be a major incident for the season, when in fact it was contained and extinguished in this episode, though the fire does serve to get the ball rolling on what is sure to be a major showdown with the Whisperers.
There are definitely some great character moments here, like Judith telling the story of the Brave Man (Rick) to RJ, Eugene's charts and graphs in relation to Rosita's baby, Negan's observations regarding everyone becoming scared shitless over the potential return of the Whisperers, all of Carol and Daryl's scenes and the continued implication of a relationship developing between Daryl and Connie. I also liked the scene showing Lydia attending school with the younger kids of the community, since she is basically at an equivalent level of education to them, particular in regards to reading. Though completely logical, I like they played the scene for amusement without really doing any disservice to the character.

That was a great season premiere, I especially loved the opening scene.
Eugene's approach to parenting was hilarious. That's definitely an interesting little family they've got there, with Rosita, the three guys, and the baby, who is apparently named Coco according to the closed captions I had on while brushing my teeth.
Kelley losing her hearing too is an interesting development.
Lydia not knowing how to read was a surprise, but I guess it makes sense Alpha wouldn't teach her since she isn't trying to recreate the old world.
Negan playing his mind games with Lydia was interesting, I hope he doesn't manipulate her into doing something stupid.
I loved the way they had Judith telling RJ about Rick, that's the kind of thing I could see becoming a zombie apocalypse legend.
I really hope sometime before the end we get a reunion between her and her father.

The show fell 34% in total viewers from its season 9 premiere to 4 million, and declined 42% among adults 18-49 to a 1.4 rating, as well as 35% in AMC's preferred 25-54 demographic.
A series low for a season premiere is very bad. The overall viewership is still huge for cable, but if the rumored salary that Norman Reedus is getting is true, this show might not be very profitable any more...

Given that they are making a whole new series, and need to keep interest up at least until the Rick movies, I'd say there is no chance that it's the last one. Unless they really start losing money fast, in which case they'll just kill off the Darrell character and keep on chugging along.
