The unofficial TrekBBS avatars discussion thread.

Mine is just a snapshot of the Chespeake & Ohio Canal that runs along the Potomac in Maryland and DC I took a couple of years back. I honestly would like a new one since I'm not crazy about it being my avatar but I can't make heads and tails out of the adobe photoshop program I have on my computer I got last year. I had a great program from my old one but the CD had crumbled somehow.

I like that Dr. Mabuse avatar. I've been watching some silent films lately so it puts me in the mood. I watched Battleship Potemkin yesterday (the 2005 Kino edition is excellent!) but am not sure I want people calling me a "red".:)

Among film connaisseurs appreciating Eisenstein's films is pretty respectable. I must admit, I've yet to see them myself. I have a hard time with the Soviet propaganda. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to start with October...
If you haven't already, you should give Dr. Mabuse a try. It's pretty long (two parts totalling 4,5 hours - typical Fritz Lang length ;)) but very entertaining and exciting. Also great expressionistic scenery.
A few years ago, a newly restored version was released on DVD which offers excellent image quality and a newly composed jazzy score I'm quite fond of. I'm not sure whether it was released where you live but the German DVD also has English subtitles.

Mine is the complete score to a song I wrote. It's titled Writers' Block.

I always have a Smurf avatar because I love the little buggers. And I make them myself of course. At one point I assigned each month a theme and would create a new one once a week that went along with whatever the theme was. I did four Smurf avatars for each of the five Trek series and one month was for Trek villains. I also did a month of DC comic book characters and a then a month of X-men. I also have several special holiday Smurf avatars (like the one I am using now). I think in total I ended up creating like forty Smurf avatars.

But now I have just gotten so busy that I haven't had time to do anything new lately. I still have plans to do the Smurfs as characters from Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars and a few others like Bond, Indiana Jones. I need to make the time. I had a lot of fun doing them. Actually I would love to go back and upgrade a few of the first ones I did too. Maybe sometime soon...

Mine's from the fantastic Doctor Who episode, "Blink". I was going for the scarier version rather than my normal weeping angel. If you haven't seen the episode, do watch. I love it.

I'm alright with the Soviet propaganda. Like anything else, I just look at it as a film, a story. On that basis, ignoring actual reality and politics, it's stunning. The construction is perfect. the technique is geared to make you sympathic for the rebels, and it works. At the end of the film, when the Potemkin sails peacefully past the Russian fleet, who have joined the revolution, I felt like cheering. It's just a great film.

I haven't actually seen Dr. Mabuse, but it's on my list. I saw some clips of it on the Metropolis disc, and it looks great. I love all the German expressionist films I've seen so far, so I'm sure I'd love it.

Speaking of silent film, about a week ago I had the pleasure of seeing a film print of Buster Keaton's The General, with live music from the Alloy orchestra. It was the print that's going to be seen on the upcoming Blu-ray, and it is stunning. Silent film really comes alive in the theater.

My normal avatar is(naturally)Corat Damar, one of the Greatest Cardassians ever. I seem to change it every few weeks using screencaps from trekcore.

my Halloavatar is the Kosst Dukat, or rather the first procession of Dukat by a Pah-Wraith. I think it suits the name Loki Dukat:evil:

I'm basically lazy.
For holiday avs, I google and steal an image from the world wide web.
The rest of the time, I always use a photo I've taken.

If you want something a little more user-friendly (and FREE) just for avatars and the like, try Paint.NET. You'll have to download the program as well as Microsoft's .NET package, but this site will give the instructions for both. It doesn't have the power of Photoshop or GIMP, but it does avatars and easy stuff like that wonderfully well.

That's what I use for my stuff.

I change my av only on special occasions, and I couldn't think of a way to Halloween-ify my usual av except to make the coloring a bit gloomier, thus. The picture is form my favorite childhood movie.

^ As I suspected......... :shifty:

Mine is usually an avatar of Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Bloo is a bit like my alter-ego.

<--- This current one is from a Googled screencap, where he's decked out for Halloween.

^ And... well... um... bony? :rommie: Just don't mess up Christmas this year or we will have to send Oogie Boogie after you.

And auntiehill I wouldn't even recognize you without Bloo. Actually (years ago) when I noticed you loved Foster's was the moment I realized you were AWESOME. (My favorite will always be Cheese... "I like Chocolate Milk!")

Kestra that is one of my favorite episodes of the new Doctor Who! I recognized it right off. That epi scared the... forgive me for being blunt... shit out of me.

Love it! I'm not nearly so talented.

Haha, I was the same way. I was practically hiding behind the couch watching it, but that's standard procedure for me and Doctor Who. Then I watched it again, and again, and again.

Gratuitous geekiness time? I think so!
