The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

Not family enough with any ore those films to know - was the enough to differentiate or where they pretty much scene for scene?
The new "Total Recall" was the worst in that regard. The only thing it changed was the setting and heavily sanitizing the fight scenes, due to the PG-13 rating.

I just realized, Day of the Triffids has been remade three times. There was a theatrical release plus two BBC miniseries.

Andromda Strain got a miniseries re-make that was pretty poor and the less said about the mini-series remake of the The Prisoner the better and then we had a mini-series remake of a mini-series with the stand <shudder>

so I guess the trick with a remake is not to go scene for scene for but at the same time don't change the crux of the story too much or add padding.

It's sounding like Amazon's live-action Voltron movie could go straight to streaming. Who makes these decisions? I understand spending money on a marketing campaign where the movie underperforms is not a good thing, but if you spend $150 million on a movie and it goes straight to streaming, you're not getting $150 million in new subscribers.

They haven't decided where to release the film yet.

They haven't milked them as much as they can though. Hand-drawn animated movie, computer-animated movie, live action movie, Disney+ series, Broadway musical.

Remember when movie studios could release the same movie on disc over and over again with only minor additions or enhancements (or in different packaging with no updates)? How many different editions of Princess Bride are there?

Wait until you subscribe to D+ Plus to watch them in the Holodeck. :rommie:

First time I really noticed studios milking the audience was when Paramount released the complete movie Star Trek DVD box set. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a special edition while the rest were standard edition. Then every time another movie got the special edition treatment, there was a whole new box set! The first few box sets were released before Nemesis came out.

How many Trekkies do you think own every single version of this box set?

I think all versions of The 39 Steps vary quite a bit. The '78 version may be the most faithful to the book but even this veers off wildly (with Hannay hanging off the hands of Big Ben!*)

I think all versions of A Star is Born follow a similar storyline, only in the original they're actors whereas in every other version the male and female leads are singers.

(* I know Big Ben isn't the clock/tower but only the bell but it's what most people think of as the clock/tower!)

Yeah it was dull film. They made out they were going to be more faithful to the book but really they were just riffing on the film (badly) I always remember Len Wiseman complaining that he'd wanted to make a wholly original sci-fi film but had to make the remake instead, but the absolute lack of any originality in TR2012 makes me wonder how bad such a film might have been!)

The original film is nothing like the book, just a generic 50s/60s monster movie. The first mini series in the 80s is the best of the three adaptations by far.

Yep, the dreaded vault. Disney in particular would bring the movies back out and claim them as new remastered versions.

Yeah, same general storyline, but at least everything else has been reinvented with a whole new set of songs for each different era, evoking completely different feels. Plus I think the Judy Garland version has never really been released as complete. The version I've seen had many scenes that had to be reconstructed with stills as some scenes were lost.

The Accountant 2, which was released in theaters on April 25th by Amazon, is still not known when it will be available on VOD, iTunes and Amazon. Normally, Amazon movies would come to VOD 30 days after they were released in theaters. So they may have extended the period to 45 or 60 days after Cinema Con.
