The TOS helm restoration

Nothing shameless about it; my I had the pleasure of seeing the restored console in person the day it went on display at EMP and speaking with Will (more like listening to him in awe) about the history of the console and its recent restoration. Amazing work.

Shameless promotion - not. Feek deserves the mention as he did all the work!

OTOH I'm the one who told EMP to call him... oh well I guess this is what they mean about a background character.

Feek61, can you comment on the accuracy of the Franz Joseph helm (in the Technical Manual)?

How about the Michael McMaster blueprints version?

Did either of these guys get the measurements about right?

The McMaster blueprints seem to be closer regarding the measurments but both have certain similarities and differences from the actual piece. Great question! I will prepare a profile comparison so you can judge for yourself.

Here is the line profile of the McMasters helm compared with the outline (in white) of the actual; at the same scale. You can see the differences between the two:

That being the case; it is amazing how much McMasters got right.

Te be clear; The white is the actual, and the line drawing is the McMasters, correct?

I love seeing the cracks in the paint so you can see where the pieces of wood are. It's nice to see the construction. Though, I would pay good money for an "upskirt" shot, so to speak, of the underside of the console. And by "pay good money" I mean, I cant afford to pay any money.

In one second-season episode that I recently watched, when the Enterprise is hit by enemy fire and everyone throws themselves out of their seats, it almost looks like the top of the helm console literally breaks free from the base. I've also seen the base of Kirk's chair tilt up off the floor of the bridge. More examples of "stuff you would never notice in one viewing on an old TV".

Thank you! This stuff is very cool. :bolian:
