The TNG DVD sets... individual seasons, or series set?

Get the blu-ray sets that start releasing later this year.

Not what I'm looking for, not an answer to my question.

With the blurays coming, and the improvements that are being made to the series for that release, I really think buying the DVD edition at this point is a waste of money.

Do you not have a HD TV and/or a bluray player? HD TVs are pretty common and bluray players are cheap.

Buying the DVDs now would be like buying the VHS tapes when the DVDs came out, I think.

Just my thought that if you put down your money now for the DVDs, and then later this year you see everyone going gaga for the new bluray release, you'll regret having gotten those DVDs.

Like me, you have an opportunity to have skipped over a once very expensive purchase ($100+ per season) for a better product. I'd hate to have put out that money only to want to buy it again on the new format, which I did do for TOS (thank goodness only three seasons!)

Well, at least it seems the discs were in traditional snap-in holders that's far better than any series set I've ever seen.

I'd also second the idea of waiting for the Blu-Ray, keep in mind it'll take the next few years for the entire series to get out. If you must have the series now (and/or you don't have a BD player) then -as I said- I'd think the season sets can be found cheaply in second-hand stores. (Around here we have a place called "Vintage Stock" that carries old, used, DVDs, games, tapes, CDs, comic books and even toys.)

Checking on Amazon (USA version) right now the TNG DVD sets are available for about $47 -though buying one from a secondary retailer through Amazon takes that down to $40.) This would put the entire series at about $329 which, keep in mind, is a fraction of what people paid when the series came out new. From Amazon the series set costs around $300.

For $30 more I'd say it's worth it to get better packaging. If you don't like the bulkiness of the series sets (and the fold out style of the case) 7-disc cases can also be found and bought fairly cheaply.

Beware "secondary retailers" on Amazon. Some of them are selling counterfeits too. If you buy from Amazon, my suggestion is to be sure you're getting it directly from Amazon and not a different seller.

I always thought that the 2002 DVD's of TNG had the best packaging out of all the other Trek series. Paramount set the bar high on those releases, after the 40 disc Amaray's, but unfortunately with DS9 and the other releases Paramount went with cheap plastic for the cases (I still remember having the DS9 cases fall apart after one viewing, even though I was careful with them, back in 2003, so for the past 9 years I've had DS9 cases with scotch tape on them just too hold the covers together).

The TND DVD season sets I have do have high quality packaging, but I'm not a fan of the design. Getting to the discs is pretty annoying compared to the plastic sets that came later, even if I do have the same complaints about the quality of those sets.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if, as with TOS Remastered, there's a DVD release of the new prints as well.

As for why people might still want DVD over Blu Ray, I can't speak for the OP but I do have friends who think it's all a bit of an emperors new clothes thing with there not being enough improvement between the two formats to make it worthwhile. I'm mad for blu ray myself as a film and TV buff (though I do think older movies and shows are more obviously better on blu ray) but I can sympathise with that, it's not as big a leap as the VHS-DVD one was and if you've only space for a small TV/sound system (or mainly watch things on your computer) it won't blow your socks off.
