The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its going

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I think the brilliant ones are the productions that do a lot with a little by focusing on performance, writing and basic film literacy.

You obviously mean Act IV of TTI. ;)

I'll make a plea for the whole thing.

Sorry, my Id and Superego. I was "inspired" by the comedy team of Peters and Burnett. ;)

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I really do think that somewhere in the middle of Burnett's Twitter stream this afternoon he shifted into an arch mode about the whole thing.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I have to be honest: I'm not affiliated with Trek Productions. I've never been involved, but I've watched several. They were a big help - especially after Enterprise ended - and I enjoyed what I've seen.

That being said I'm not going to deny I'm worried about the future. Ever since I saw the promo for Trek 13 and saw the announcement of the 2017 series I've had a feeling that the days were getting numbered and legal action would start being taken. I hate to see that this is happening and I hope that it doesn't get any worse.

Hopefully this all gets resolved quickly with no further action taken.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I really don't think the new series or the movie have anything to do with the legal action.

I think Axanar pushing the perimeter so far, and pocketing money, and investing it in ways that are very much outside of what CBS was willing to allow, are the reasons for this.

Axanar might be perceived as a threat to a new TV show in the sense that it's made for a comparable amount of money to a TV show and would coexist in the same format as the new show coming. However, I think this is very unlikely to be the reason.

But there was no way Axanar was threatening the big bread winner, the movies, and it wasn't going to effect the CBS merchandise of classic Star Trek stuff. So it really wouldn't make sense from that stand point.

No it's the "corruptive" elements that are the problem here. Trying to play off as a professional production, and making any kind of "profit." I mean they were basically SELLING MERCH.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

Isn't there a "donors store" for the Axanar donors? Where you can get model ships, soundtrack CDs, blu-rays, books, posters, patches, t-shirts, jackets, etc. ?

That would seem to fly in the face of "no profit" in my opinion.

Oh yeah. People were basically buying model kits of the Ares that could easily pass off as the same ones put out by Polar Lights.

Perhaps this isn't the time to say this, but I've never been impressed with the design of that ship.

The Ares was based on the Centar... one of Trek's ugliest kit bashes IMO....

Same here.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I really don't think the new series or the movie have anything to do with the legal action..

I think the new series has more to do with it than the movie.

They don't want something remotely approaching the style or quality or tone of the new series to be online while they're trying to sell this new series which will also be online.

Also, the flagrant disregard of copyright, royalties, and trademark.

But I think if CBS didn't have anything cooking, they might still be allowed to do what they're doing. However, now they're profiting from diluting the brand.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

Seems unlikely that CBS will pay Abrams to put it in his universe.

There is no "his universe." He does not own any part of that franchise.
It is his universe, because even after he has left, the movies continue in that universe he first established under the direct authority of CBS/Paramount, the people who own the rights to Star Trek, making it official Star Trek.

Years from now, it will still be his universe, because it was created using his vision of Star Trek's future, under the direct authority of the license holder for Star Trek, and has been enshrined in the pantheon of films (and possibly TV series'). That will not change.

TL;DR - J.J. Abrams is a part of the official Star Trek universe. Nothing will change that.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

He made a couple movies.

That doesn't make JJ Abrams "universe" any more distinct than Nicholas Meyers, or Roddenberry 2.0. It's all Star Trek. All owned by CBS.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

Does anyone know whose idea it was to do the alternate universe thing? I'm assuming it was Orci. So, from a meta standpoint. It's really his universe.

Thought now that I think about it, if it was Kurtzman, then that might be some indication where the series is going.

He never had any input at CBS and it is currently unknown how, or if, the new series will relate to his movies. CBS probably wants it to in some sense given the hiring of Alex Kurtzmann to get things going; but who knows what if anything from the new movies they are legally allowed to use?

Abrams definitely made a major impact on the Star Trek franchise (and with his collaborators did create a new 'universe' that may be the standard going forward) but as much as that's not going away; it's also not his - it doesn't look like he'd get even a token producer credit on the new series.

PRetty sure it was either Orci or Kurtzman who came up with that. The idea was to try and appease long time Trek fans by keeping the original timeline intact.(And I also wager this may have been a financial move, so that the novels and merch could continue unhindered/unaffected, along with Star Trek Online and such.)

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

Perhaps this isn't the time to say this, but I've never been impressed with the design of that ship.

It just looks like the 23rd century equivalent of the Titan from the Pocket Books series.

There's nothing unique about it, which makes me wonder how Peters was able to copyright it?

It's all CBS's to use as they wish.

JJ may have created it, but he doesn't own it. If they wanted to use elements from TOS, TWOK, TNG, ENT, and STID, they could without much legal wrangling... might be some royalties they have to pay off but not much else.

You don't hire the guy who helped create the alternate timeline and then not use that timeline.

CBS. Owns. Everything.

Re: The Star Trek fan film community: What it looks like & where its g

I believe John Allen, a user here has also experienced similar issues with his own YouTube channel having videos/the entire channel arbitrarily shut down. I've also read horror stories about how the automation combined with the piss-poor infrastructure when dealing with this sort of problem at YouTube only further aggravates the problem when a video is taken down by mistake. Sigh, technology... even when it is supposed to make life easier, it eventually bungles it up!
