They announced the movie all the way back at San Diego Comic Con or one of the other big events a few months ago, the only new news here is that they're pushing it back from July 23 to September 7.
And I'm looking forward to it, I'm a huge Simpsons fan. I was a little surprised back when they first announced it, because I could have sworn one of the producers had said that they were not going to do another movie until the show had ended. I'm pretty sure they said trying to do the movie and the show at the same time was an absolute nightmare, and they were never going to do that again.

The Simpsons has been creatively bankrupt for longer than most of it's target audience has been alive. Recent seasons have been an improvement on the last decade or two... but it's not the show I used to love and never will be again.
I'm honestly impressed it's lasted this long, though I'm not sure how to judge if that's a good or bad thing. 
I had dropped the show from my viewing list by the time the first movie came out, but I still watched and loved that movie.So, if they think now they have something that warrants another movie, well, I'm game.
I stopped regularly watching new episodes of The Simpsons back in 2012. Undecided if I'll bother with this movie, the trailers are going to need to impress The Fuck out of me to guarantee I see it.
I stopped watching regularly after season 10 or so, but I still watch the Treehouse of Horror and Sideshow Bob episodes...although even those are very hit and miss.

I remember like two or three years ago they announced they were going to work on a sequel film, and develop a spin-off series of some sort. I never could find anything further on that spin-off series, any time I search it, just takes you to all the failed passed attempts to develop something.
Of course, the first film was twenty years passed due and prime, and now this one is nearly thirty such years.

The first movie was released in 2007, and they're trying to get the second movie ready for 2027. That means the first movie will be released on its 20th anniversary.

I remember the last new episode of the Simpsons I watched was the one were they killed off Maude Flanders.
Like me, you stuck around too long. I wish I had pulled out earlier.
