The Simpsons 2 will be in theaters on September 3, 2027.

Given that Paramount canceled Avatar's theatrical release and brought it directly to Paramount Plus, and Disney hasn't released a 2D animated film since 2011, I was considering the possibility that The Simpsons 2 might be released on Disney Plus instead of theatrically. However, Matt Groening is a bigger name than all the Avatar animators combined, and from what I know, he wanted the film to have a theatrical release. He probably wouldn't allow it. Also, The Simpsons is a more popular show; even those who haven't watched it in years would want to see the second film in theaters. Disney is aware of that.

In a way I have a certain grudging respect for the fact that Groening, Fox, et al, found a way to create the animated version of one of those legacy comic strips that clog up print newspapers, long after the original creator(s) retired/died and long after the product was funny or relevant (see, e.g. Beetle Bailey, Blondie, the Family Circus, etc.)

It's true: I stopped watching The Simpsons after the first 10 or so years just like I stopped reading Garfield after he stopped being a cat (granted, less than 10 year). Edited to add: Turns out Garfield started doing that after just a few years, but I maintain my point.

Yes, I just bunched Garfield with all of the others that have been going on for far longer but its cut from the same cloth.

800. To paraphrase a quote from the series...

Kill me.
