The secret life of Travis Mayweather

Mayweather writes lovely little haikus in a notebook that he never shows to anyone. Sometimes, when he writes a particularly good one, he'll shake his head and say "Oh, Travis..." while smiling wistfully.

^ That just makes me sad. I would prefer not to remember that the actor was a human being, with hopes and dreams. Where's the fun in that?

Just so we're clear, we're making fun of Travis, not Anthony Montgomery. From what they gave us to build on Travis (which wasn't much), the character must of had a dull life when not behind the wheel. Did he paint, or have a musical instrument, or something, or anything?

Didn't he eat some pie once? Oh yeah, that was Trip.

The simple fact is, most actors don't make it. More than 80% of professional actors are unemployed at any one time. Anthony Montgomery did what he could w a very limited role and seems to have a good attitude about it (unlike a few of the TNG and Voyager actors who seem oddly bitter about their experiences as part of one of the most successful entertainment franchises ever). Just being a regular on any ST series means you eat for free for the rest of your life.

The NX-01 is an awfully pretty ship.

I watched Fortunate Son the other night. They really could have involved Travis more directly in the plot, maybe have him give advice to the captain during the climax, but all he gets are a couple of earnest conversations.

Apart from underusing Travis, the real problem with the episode is that Archer has to carry the idiot ball in order for the plot to work. We should be nice to the pirates. Why? Because Nice!
Never mind that, unlike the Hollywood version, real pirates are scum by definition, people who've stepped out of the reach of civilised law in order to prey on the vulnerable. How many people had the pirates killed? How many would they go on to kill after Archer let them go? This moral conundrum is more annoying than that in Dear Doctor.

Trip : [attempting to make small talk] So Travis, what are your plans for the weekend?
Travis: Um...........
Trip : [stares at Travis for a minute, then walks away shaking his head]

Trek.fm has a new Podcast of Warp 5 discussing Travis Mayweather on their Twitter page they have alink to listen to it. It was a real interesting show.

It looked like Travis spent a fair amount of time in the ship's gym.

To be honest, the man had one sexy body.

Archer: Travis, report to the decon chamber.
Travis : But I haven't been off the ship.
Archer: Don't question my orders, ensign.
[Later]
Travis : Say, why are all you guys out there watching?
Archer: Shut up Travis, and keeping rubbing in the gel. Oh yeah, that's the stuff.
Travis : What the hell?!

I felt kind of bad for the actor. Travis was introduced as being the most experienced member of the starfleet portion of the crew when it came to actually being in space and being week or months away from a friendly port at any given time. His rank was only ensign but he lived almost his whole life in space and had actually been to alien planets

other than a handful of comments over a few episodes that premise was basically forgotten
he should have been a stronger more important character even if he was a low rank

Travis was featured in Fortunate Son (s1) and Horizon (s2), but the actor did little with the part. He had a bit more to do in s4, but still wasn't very interesting.

When you see the season outtakes, Anthony is much more animated and good natured than he ever got to be as Travis. Bakula could break him up easily.

In one from the end of "Dead Stop", when Travis is recuperating in Sickbay, they play out the scene, then Scott adlibs "We found those pictures in your room." Anthony tries to stifle a laugh and fails.

Maybe if they'd given Travis a bit of an edge, it would have worked better. I could see him being a bit sarky and clever, dropping a few cutting comments from the helm. But I guess T'Pol was already "the sarcastic one". At least he wasn't a "space brother".
