Fleet Captain
Did anybody else think that the scene near the end of Part 2 of The End of Time with Ten hooking Jack Harkness up with Alonzo in the bar was a bit inappropriate for what's supposed to be a family show? I sat there and felt distinctly uncomfortable watching it.

Captain Jack has been brazenly flirting with dudes since "The Doctor Dances." It's what he does.

Ya relly! We dont want peple smiling at each other on Teevee!! It waz revulting!!

What was wrong with it?

How is that inappropriate? Two guys in a bar, starting to maybe give each other comfort. It doesn't even have to turn into something sexual. It's not like we saw them having wild sex with each other.

But that was what was strongly implied, I have no doubt that's what RTD intended.

So, it was also strongly implied that Martha and Mickey have sex together. If the people watching it know about gay people, then it isn't really inappropriate for them. If they don't, they won't get the implication. So it works out either way.

Frankly if you feel uncomfortable watching it then that is your issue to deal with.

I don't understand the problem you have with it - you do know homosexuality isn't forbidden or anything don't you? Why should it be treated any differently to hetrosexuality on television?

If Alonzo was a female character instead - the man/man situation was replaced with a man/woman one - would you have started this thread?

I don't have an encyclopedic memory of new Who. Was Alonzo the same Alonzo as "Allons-y, Alonzo" Alonzo?

So it was you posting on the BBC HYS board?
I don't think there's anything wrong or inappropriate about it. Wasn't there some gaybashing going on in Eastenders recently, I don't think there was anything wrong with that either because homosexuality and homophobia are things that both happen in the real world and kids are going to be exposed to both things in time anyway. But I'd rather have gay characters in shows than bigotry.

I was more offended by the way the show promoted underaged drinking.

That Adapose was way too young to be hanging out in that bar!

Yep, from "Voyage of the Damned."

The scene with Jack and Alonso was appropriate. It was about the Doctor giving Jack a nudge that "life goes on", not him giving Jack a "hook-up."

Maybe it's because I'm just so fed up with the constant slappings of homoeroticism RTD keeps throwing at us in his stories. We know gays exist. I actually have friends who are gay. But it can still get a tad annoying if it's brought up this often and this strongly. So if Jack had been with a woman, then yes, I probably wouldn't have reacted the way I am, but even then I reckon too much het isn't always a good thing.

I doubt you would have.

I actually have friends who are gay.

You ACTUALLY have friends who are gay!

But are you fed up of the constant "slappings" of hetrosexuality in Doctor Who? There's far more hetrosexuality in the program than homosexuality - yes we all know RTD injects homosexuality into the series because he wants to include aspects of his own lifestyle that he clearly feels a desire to reflect onscreen, that's fine with me and I've never had a problem with it - but the fact that you are 'so fed up' of the homosexuality and not the hetrosexuality is simply prejudice, no more and no less.

Captain Jack (looking pretty old btw) just needed someone to play billiards with. So the good doctor introduced them, sort of.

Since my kids like to watch Doctor Who I have to sometimes talk over dialog or put up the channel guide so they're not exposed to that stuff. Thankfully there's little of it.

This often? There's been 2 times in 5 specials as far as I remember.

I don't know, I don't see why it really matters at all. It's not like they were having full on sex.
