The Sarah Jane Adventures S3 Discussion Thread (UK Pace)

from a plot POV Luke might have stolen a few too many of the Doctors lines and make the Doctor seem less amazing.

Agreed. When the spin off episode has the main character from the main series, you don't underuse him.
but would it have been underusing him, for him see Luke in action and recognise his brilliance? Plus allowing the Doctor to get into long streams of techno babble with Luke would be a very good use of the character IMO.

I was quite surprised at how well the Doctor & Cylde worked together, I was not expecting that.

Also Cylde turning up at Sarah Janes wedding, in suit similar to the Doctors, and with K9, great subtext.

I wasn't surprised, somehow I think I expected the Doctor would gel better with Clyde

If I recall correctly, Nigel Havers auditioned for the part of Captain Janeway in Voyager.
He was the runner-up for the role, actually. It came down to him and Genevieve Bujold. The studio wanted a male captain; Berman, Piller, and Taylor wanted a female captain. They got their way, cast Bujold, and that determined the gender casting for a few other roles. When Bujold back out, Havers was no longer an option; he'd gone back to England, and the roles had been cast around the idea of the central character as a woman. Hence, Kate Mulgrew.

its funny, I didnt really realise the awesome of Clyde and just how much he knows about this stuff, until this episode.

Ah so many missed opportunities. If only they'd been allowed to tack on an extra ten minutes, or even a third episode.

Lovely story, but it all seemed so rushed.

I'll post more once its sunk in a bit.

Yeah that is a trifle odd, I'm sure both Jon and Tom's Doctors called her Sarah Jane, and that 10 called in Sarah Jane before now...
The third and fourth Doctors didn't exclusively call her "Sarah Jane." There are times, especially when the chips are down and the Doctor's feeling particularly terse, that he shortens it to "Sarah."

I do not recall Tom Baker referring to her as "Sarah Jane" even once, although I do recall Jon Pertwee doing it quite a bit.

Hey, thanks for all that information. I didn't know any of that.

At the end of the episode, when it was obvious that Sarah Jane was going to lose Peter, I was so pleased that they had cast Nigel Havers. It was a nice bit of meta for those of us (probably much, much older than the target audience!) who remember all the roles Havers has had as the suave, sophisticated gentleman charmer. I like to think that Sarah Jane was given a chance at someone with a bit of cachet in that department!

Awesome episode. The final moment with Sarah asking if she'll see the Doctor again, and DT saying he doesn't know... very sad.

I think Chaos Descending has it right. Pertwee almost always called her Sarah Jane. While Tom called her Sarah, and ocassionally Sarah Jane Smith when he introduced her.

Ah, now I know what was bothering me about the ending. I was really expecting the doctor to say something more. Not sure what, Just something conforting.

Even better, wouldn't it have been lovely if she'd at least invited him to stay for tea. It would have been lovely if they'd ended it on a more subdued version of The Next Doctor. Such a missed opportunity.

Ah well.

* So the Trickster knows about the Key to Time. Wow, further hint at a possible connection between him and the Guardians?

* Loved the 'Don't forget me' call-back to her parting words to Toms Doctor.

* Not sure what to make of the Doctors final expression as the doors closed. Sympathy for Sarah? Regret? Or his usual 'lonely time traveller' shtick?

* Poor Sarah. I got a bit teary eyed as she walked from the church, and afterwards sitting alone with K9.

im disappointed, they totally wasted Lukes character in favour or Cylde. "Luke you maybe the most intelligent human who ever lived, but just wait with K9" was hoping Luke was coming to do something heroic and Doctorish in this episode, very disappointed.

The Doctor great, seemed he already knew Ranis name, not overly sure how, as she wasnt part of the gang when theDoctor last saw Sarah Jane.

The actor who plays Luke was smack bang in the middle of his exams so they may have had no choice about it.

loved it. i literally LOL'd at Rani's CLYDE!finger point. just like a married couple.

loved the Doctor, natch. loved his nod to seeing Luke in TSE.

Rani's got nice pins.

nice to get shout-outs to Maria and the Brig.

Smith/K-9 bitching was brilliant. also loved K-9 dobbing the kids in and Rani's 'The gob on you!'

thought Clyde and TenDoc made a great pairing.

got teary-eyed at the end.

it might be best that theDoctor didnt meet Mr Smith, the Doctor does not have a good track record with super computers, and Mr Smith is far from innocent.

I think its a shame we are never going to get a 10th Doctor, Sarah Jane & K9 TARDIS story, where they go to an alien planet together.

I think that was all "David Tennant" as I am thinking this was the last time the actor was in the Tardis and the last scene he filmed as the Doctor, he was tearing up quite a bit earlier as well.....

^ No, the last scene he filmed as the Doctor is in the finale. His 'final words' were revealed in an interview he gave that was quoted in the Mirror today. SJA was filmed long before his final scenes.

That's not what he said in a recent interview

What was the last day like?
David: "My last day was actually on The Sarah Jane Adventures which is on this afternoon. The last line I said as the Doctor is halfway through the episode tonight: 'You two - with me. Spit spot!' They were the last words I uttered in the suit! I guess it was robbed of any epic quality really but that was probably best because it was very emotional saying cheerio. Filming the very final scenes was very sad. There are lots of scenes in the final story that are very sad and were very sad to play. If one of them had coincided with the actual final day I'dve been a puddle. I was a bit of a puddle as it was but I kept a stiff upper lip."

Ah. The Mirror article severely cut that down then. And I obviously completely missed him saying that line yesterday. Ah well.

It is pretty much the least epic thing he could have gone out on. Other than tripping over the brick and regenerating of course.

I also loved when the kids asked if they could look inside the TARDIS, and suddenly for a moment he was channeling Tom Baker, with the "You want to look in my TARDIS?!"

I think it was mean not to tell the kids that the place is as small as a large city, and if they'd just open a door into the rest of the "old girl" it's likely they'd have more fun in the bowels of the TARDIS than those doomed kids in Wonker's factory.

We've only really seen the control room and the wardrobe in Nuwho right?

I wondered if he wasn't available for some reason. It seemed like in this and in the last two-parter (woman in the attic), Luke was shoved aside. Exams would explain it.
