One might assume they would, by profession, also know a few things about what the transporter can do to people. But amusingly enough, they themselves never get hurt on screen or in known backstory. If anything, the transporter saves Pulaski's life and makes Barclay a hero. And the worst it does to McCoy is send him to the Mirror universe and then back... It restores him from literally about an inch of his life once!

Of course, it's also been known to split people, fuse people, duplicate people, deposit redshirts in space, turn people into children, transport people to the Mirror Universe, and produce something that "didn't live long... fortunately."

Why? Even if one owes their life to something doesn't make you a fan. You can be skeptical and still appreciative of the device in that particular instance.
