The romance - will it go anywhere?

TFA awakens plays the romance elements very subtle in this film - there are a couple of knowing looks and glances but nothing more and you could complete read it as friendship but I notice a lot of commentators are suggesting the hints of a romance are in there?

So will Disney be brave and expand the Poe/Finn romance in the second film?

While TPTB are definitely being progressive with their three stars being female, black, and Hispanic... they will never have a prominent gay relationship. Way too controversial. There have been gay characters in the new canon novels, but those are the novels. The best we could hope for it Poe being revealed to be gay in the novels, but it's conveniently never mentioned in the movies. Just like Dumbledore (and even that revelation was so subtle many missed it).

How is it controversial in this day and age? Doctor Who has had several prominent gay characters, including one who ended up getting his own spin-off.

Granted, I will be surprised if Disney does go ahead and develop a relationship between Finn and Poe, only because I don't imagine this sort of thing being a priority for the Mouse, not because it's controversial.

Then again, I was shocked to discover the EU never dealt with homosexuality and that the SW franchise's first ever homosexual character in any medium was in a novel released April 2015.

What galaxy are you from?

At least three quarters of the world's population is still homophobic as fuck. A 200 million dollar space-opera with a gay romance would have serious trouble selling, and if you think Disney would give up a hefty portion of the profits just for social justice's sake, think again.

I wanna really say you're wrong, but honestly, you're probably right. :(

Didn't they take Finn off the Chinese version of the poster for the all-important Chinese market?

Finn was shrunken down to about a quarter of his size on the US poster. Poe was removed completely (along with Maz and Chewbacca. Clearly there's an anti-Wookie agenda...).

You can see the differences in this CNN article, along with Chinese state media's response to accusations of racism:

A prominent gay romance would risk losing a lot money. And Disney wants ALL of the monies. Where I live, I know people who wont buy food if they think a gay person cooked it.(I don't live in one of the red ones either) They are not going to take their kids to see a movie with men kissing.

Didn't Finn seem more interested in Rey?

If Rey is a Skywalker, I don't think she should hook up with anyone at all. Whenever someone from that bloodline procreates it usually results in a fifty fifty chance of creating either the savior of the galaxy or the destroyer of it. I know it makes for more Episodes but it's still not a very good idea.

If medicine in the galaxy far, far away can replace an amputees hand, I'm sure it can figure out how to snip some fallopian tubes.
