Not sure if it's been mentioned but I thought I would just quickly ask anyway. Is that actually a Robot that chases young Kirk and asks him his name in the trailer cause unless Abrams is including another new peice of Tech into Federation history Earth has never had, to our knowledge, walking Robots besides the Soong type Androids?

Yeah thats my opinion. But the voice does sound really distorted after he says the word "name"

Thats one of the moments JJ forget it was Star Trek instead of Starwars, he brought in COP-3-PIO.. :p

Haha.

Watching the trailer again, there is some distortion on the cop's voice, but still doubtful he's a robot.

There's not enough info either way to decide whether he's a robot or human. I'm leaning towards robot, personally, because robots aren't nearly ubiquitous enough in the Trek universe and I'd be surprised if J.J. didn't look at this as something to be addressed.

It's also possible it's a robot with a remote, human operator. A police department equivalent of an unmanned drone.

I'm not sure what to make of the modulation in the voice. There are voice synthesizers available today that sound more natural than that, so I'd expect 23rd Century robots to have very natural-sounding voices. If the cop's human, perhaps the modulation is there to protect the identity of off-duty cops ... like a superhero who wears a mask so people in his or her personal life aren't put at risk. I don't like the implications of that, however.

If its a robot why does it need a breathing/filtration apparatus on it?

Same reasons explosions in space make noise. It's cool.

Atmosphere analysis? Heat exchange ventilation? Exhaust?

Why would they put the CPU in the more vulnerable head?:p

Anthropomorphism. Or the rest of the body contains the power supply and hydraulics or equivalent. Besides, what makes you think the CPU is in the head in the first place? Just because the visible vents are in the face, doesn't mean they're the only ones and that the ventilation can't be circulated through the torso.

We're assuming that there's not a third choice - he's not a robot or a human, he's an alien who needs the equipment to breathe.

Remember these guys ?

Their voices sounded modulated too. Why does everyone living on a Federation planet need to be a native ?

The above image is hosted on my own personal Google Pages webspace and is not a hotlink.

 So they would put a heat exchanger/exhaust sytem in the face where it has to face and talk to humans? Not likely.

I didn't say it was in the head, but that's where butters suggested it would be. Is it logical to extend a vent system in a complex machine that has a capacity limitation like a humanoid form to the head if the CPU is elsewhere?

Why couldn't it be? How big is the ventilation snorkel on a diesel submarine?

I remember back in 1980 -- when The Empire Strikes Back came out -- one of my friends contended that Boba Fett was a robot.

Try putting one in a humanoid.
