The Psi Phi collection thread for favourite characters and scenes 2008

I would like to start with making the following suggestion:

Star Trek: Klingon Empire – the good-bye scene between Rodek and Leskit

Maybe you should mention somehere in the title or at least the first post that this thread is for next years awards. :)

If the thread stays sticky long enough, it could be for a lot of years. The 2007 Awards are still in development. Therefore I see no harm if people also want to mention favourite scenes or new characters that apply to 2007.

But wouldn't that get a bit messy after some years? I think one thread per year would be better, but it's your idea. :)

But we allready have a thread for this years contest. Why should we complicate matters by distributing suggestions for this year's contest to two threads? Especially since we are supposed to send the suggestions via eMail anyway.

From Forged in Fire: Torture of the heroes
From A Burning House: Worf and Kurn/Rodek on the field

Character: Matriarch of the farm family in A Burning House

I would like to suggest a spoiler warning be added to the thread title. While we can speak in generalities, a lot of cool stuff happens near the end of books that's difficult to mention without giving something away.

To be accurate, it wasn`t my idea. I just helped. :)

The problem with books is, as I experienced myself, you can easily forget what year a suggestion applies to. I can see it coming that people suggest things, others say “This suggestion is not for 2008 but for 2009 and should therefore be moved into the other thread”. It might get confusing, even annoying. My feeling is, the people who put the Psi Phi Awards together can look and see themselves where they belong.

One factor is, not everybody is reading the books immediately after release. I have a big “to read” pile at home and am definitely not always certain what year the book in question belongs to.

I think there is nothing wrong with it to offer people more than one option. Sending emails without mentioning the choice somewhere else, like here, is a wasted opportunity because others see it, might think “Great idea, I want to vote for that scene too!” Or it might jog memories that lead to new suggestions. I see this as an idea to help to get more emails and more choice.

At this late time I don`t think there will be a lot of movement in any thread about 2007 suggestions. If something pops up here nevertheless, I don`t think that is a bad thing.

But the e-mails are just for nominations, not voting. I assume a given scene only has to be nominated once. And then all the nominees will be listed publicly for the actual vote.

But this kind of confusion would only be possible in a very small time-frame from January to the end of February of a year, the time were the actual suggestions are collected, after that previous works aren't eligible anymore anyway.

It's nice enough from them to actually do the contest, despite the fact that PsiPhi the website (I'm not speaking about the forum) is basically defunct, do we really have to make their life any harder than we have to?

Isn't the date printed in the front of the books somewhere. Something along the lines of "First printed in February 2008" or something like that?

I never said that anyone should just send an eMail and then never mention it again. As you can see I have posted my suggestions in the other thread after sending the eMail. I just think whoever has a suggestion should send an eMail in any case to make Brendan's job as easy as possible. After that he or she can still post the suggestion at one of the boards.

Sorry if my comments may have upset you, I just wanted to give my input on an idea I thought was very good.:)

No, actually, only the top four or five suggestions for Best New Character and Best Scene make it to the actual voting. So even if someone else has mentioned e-mailing about something you'd like to see nominated, it would be wise for you to send an e-mail too.

Qagh from Forged in Fire. I'm only about 1/2 way through, but so far I've found him to be a fascinating character, and judging by what people have said here I haven't even seen the worst of what he does.

He doesn't really count, though, as he first appeared on DS9 in "Blood Oath," so he's hardly a "new" character.

D'oh!:brickwall: I just completely spaced out when I posted that. Which is really suprising because part of the reason I like the book so much is the fact that it gives background for one of my favorite early DS9 eps.:brickwall: That and the fact that it is just an awsome book.

Best Scene:

Forged In Fire: The epilogue (Epilogue 2) where Kang meets the Albino's former wife and tries to elicit information from her about the Albion's whereabouts.

A Burning House: The scene in the High Council Chambers wherein Kurak is made head of her house, Leskit's wife--Karreka?--becomes her ghin'tak (sp?), and Leskit and Kurak marry.

Woo!

And yes, Leskit's now-ex-wife is Karreka, and it's spelled either gin'tak (the Anglicized spelling) or ghIntaq (the tlhIngan Hol spelling).

Keith,

Thanks for the clarification. Acutally, although it was a great scene, it was just one of many great scenes in the novel. I may add a few more (I want the book with me to get them right), but this one was one of the best.

The Final scene in ART OF THE IMPOSSIBLE.

My signature, from THE RETURN.

CAPTAIN'S GLORY's epilogue - IMO, the best finale for the ST universe, it it could ever have been one.

Q and Picard arguing in Q-SQUARED, with Q forcing Picard to help him because of the incident shown in TAPESTRY.

These are some of my favorite scenes from some of the novels I've read.
