The positive Voyager thread: What was good with the series?

There have been a lot debates in recent threads about what went wrong with Voyager. I've been participating there myself and as you probably know, I do have some objections to how the series was handled by those in charge and there are certain events I would like to wipe out or change radically from the series.

But I think it's time to look at the positive aspects with the series and discuss what was good with Voyager. Why do we like Voyager?

I will throw in my gold coins here and throw in what I like with Voyager:

The characters and the premise for the show.

I definitely like the strong bond of friendship the crew develops over time including the Doctor. Everyone cared for each other. The only thing that bothers me is Joe Carrey being killed off in one of the last episodes.....
Voyager has strong female characters. I love Kes's role as adviser for Janeway and her chemistry with Neelix. Even Neelix became less annoying and he had hilarious scenes with Tuvok - almost like Spock and McCoy! (Mr. Vulcan ).

I'll bite. The one thing I'll give Star Trek: Voyager credit was it was the only series that came close in embracing the Star Trek slogan "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before." As other series, including my fav which is STAR TREK, they tended to do patrolling in sectors which had a pre-set history, it may have been new to the viewer but for Kirk and Spock it was familiar ground. While Voyager journeyed to a planet but didn't have such background, and for the character of Kes-- for me was the symbol of the general audience-- learning about Star Trek and the nuances at the same time while experiencing an unexplored world as the episodes ensued.

Tim Russ performance in this show was on another level IMO and the same goes for most of the cast. Music, the overall premise and stories were all really good.

While I hated her sexualized outfit and the horrid pairing with Chakotay at the end, Seven of Nine's introduction and arc was awesome.

The EMH.

Episodes like "Future's End", "Year of Hell", "The Raven" and loads more.

Likable characters. Some really good episodes. Good premise. Seven's arc.

The Doctor (very good character and mostly due I think to the talent of the actor Robert Picardo)

Seven: She started as a Borg babe and turned out to be a very good actress, much better than the lackluster (Harry Kim) who definitely should have been the one let go instead of Kes.

The stories were varied and ambitious, if sometimes idiotic (but we're not here to talk about that).

I liked this cast. It seemed like they had great chemistry and Kate Mulgrew, like Janeway, was the mother figure of them all. Also, I loved the theme and the sequence. It's my favorite in all of Trek.

The starship Voyager himself was something really positive about the series; it was definitely a step up of advance design after the beautiful USS Defiant from DS9. Although I never liked the bridge layout for the ship, but everything else from the engine room, the corridors, Sick Bay, the Mess Hall and the quarters of the ship was a sight to see. I've mentioned before NCC-1701-E should have been Voyager or it should have borrowed a lot from him because it was a sight to see every episode.

If the cast had chemistry then I guess Harry Kim was like argon for air breathers. He just occupied space and wasn't involved in the overall chemical reaction, his removal wouldn't have changed anything except for people looking for inert gasses.

For me positive points are : Kate Mulgrew/Jeri Ryan/Robert Picardo (even if I'm not fond of his character, the Doctor) performances, the vessel/its interiors and the musical theme which were very classy and to end, some storylines which were really well done (from writing to acting) => a special mention to guest stars who were fabulous and some of whom would have deserved to stay more on board!

Initially, I thought the Captain was a positive, she was feisty, she didn't take no shit from the hostile alien of the week/season.
But as time progressed she began to irritate me. Too much "Let's have a look at this anomaly" instead of "Maximum warp, let's get to fuck home"
Positives for me were Suter, all too briefly, Seven of Nine and the Doctor.
Kim, Torres, Paris and Chakotay bored me rigid.

Chakotay was a good First Officer, he had to deal with the overblown ego of the mary sue Captain every week which would've been annoying to any other 1st officer, and despite his disagreements with her leadership he was subordinate till the end of the series. He had opportunities to form a mutiny since the crew valued his ethics and real leadership but never did, his stance to stand below the ever increasing large shadow of his Captain whether it's strategic decisions or violating the prime directive anytime the Great Janeway wanted to. As frustrating as it was as a viewer to see this interesting character be upstaged by the perfect Kathryn Janeway every week; I understood his grounds to respect she's the Captain of the ship.

I honestly wish the Voyager producers explored Chakotay with B'Elanna; I always thought the truly great actress Roxann Biggs delivered a personal affection for him and even when she was wrongly matched up with the WIll Riker wannabe Tom Paris IMO, she still conveyed very nice subtle sentiment for Chakotay.

Wasn't she with Chak in that episode where they're all delusional? I think she was.
