My opinion? As long as it doesn't get out of hand, I don't think there's any problem talking about politics every now and then.

Not everyone has or wants access to TNZ. The Darwinian nature isn't really my taste.

I'm not crazy about it, but it's nice to be able to have "serious" topics in here every once in awhile. It breaks up the monotony of threads about poop and love life issues.

Besides, it's sort of like a wading pool for those of us that have an interest in politics but are terrified of the shark-infested waters of TNZ.

I wish the usual suspects in here would take their garbage to TNZ so it can get the reception it deserves.

Depends if people actually want to discuss politics, or just indulge in the sort of childish partisan bickering that now passes for politics.

Since people are under no obligation to read or participate in political topics in Miscellaneous any more than they are required to join TNZ and discuss politics there, I don't really understand how anyone could have a problem with it even if that's not one of their interests.

There can be politicizing of topics which one would not expect to be political in nature, and that can be annoying, but I haven't seen an excessive amount of that going on. Most topics that are political or hot button in nature are usually pretty obvious from the start, and even if they do eventually turn that way unexpectedly, you're still free to stop participating in the topic at any time or notify the mods and they'll decide whether the topic has been derailed into something it shouldn't be.

I like the idea of having serious topics in Misc, but the political threads in this forum, such as The Cinderella Story and The Obama Bow, are hardly serious. The pointless arguing and political jabs from both sides is no different from TNZ. Sure, you get less name calling, but it's the same thing. Lengthy threads that serve no purpose other than to be a battleground for the left and the right to spar with each other.

I really don't want Misc to become a TNZ lite, so I'd be willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. It's really disgusting bath water.

Nothing wrong with the topics themselves, only that a lot of the political threads in here lately aren't really for discussion so much as trying to score some political "points" somehow, or bait people into an argument.

Most of it is just spill-over from TNZ anyway, from people that either can't handle the responses in TNZ, or who got booted out and just moved the game to another venue...

Which has actually been happening since the First Continental Congress, but I digress.

To be fair, there's occasionally good political discussion in MISC. It's just that most of it isn't INTENDED to be discussion, but mere baiting or posturing, so those threads tend to be doomed to failure before they start...

Yeah. This is the "out of hand" part. If political threads are/were/would be up for review, I'd understand if the mods decided either way.

Exactly. It's not civilized debate; it's just mudslinging with slightly different mud.

I see it as an attempt to start a serious discussion, but inevitably these then descend to name-calling, posturing, and the re-emergence of grievances already established in TNZ - to the extent that they are ultimately the extension of already-commenced TNZ battles spilling over into the rest of the board.

Ha, yes very true, but these days people don't even need to get up from their desk to do it, hell you can even do it while you're still in bed

You get exactly the kind of discussion that you give. It's interesting the two topics that you chose to (correctly) cite as examples of being non-serious, since the two guys who started those topics aren't here for serious political discussion at all.

If you start things off with a ridiculous premise, if you lie, exaggerate, misrepresent, or only see the worse in an opposing political viewpoint, you're not going to get serious discussion in return.

I really don't want Misc to become a TNZ lite, so I'd be willing to throw the baby out with the bath water. It's really disgusting bath water.
Then don't participate in political topics. Why impose your personal dislikes on others by calling for a ban on all political discussion?

We rehash this argument about banning some line of discussion from Miscellaneous once or twice every year. It wasn't the right answer before and it's not the right answer now. The answer remains the same each time. If you don't like it, you aren't required to participate in it. There are plenty of other topics in Miscellaneous to participate in.

I see it as an attempt to start a serious discussion, but inevitably these then descend to name-calling, posturing, and the re-emergence of grievances already established in TNZ - to the extent that they are ultimately the extension of already-commenced TNZ battles spilling over into the rest of the board.

People blame everything on TNZ but that's not right or fair. The two biggest disruptive influences to having serious political topics in Miscellaneous never even participate in TNZ.
