"Into Darkness" was part of a completely misleading marketing campaign, just as "Earth Will Fall" on the movie posters was. I really expected and hoped that the movie would live up to those phrases ... imagine my disappointment!
There's still a little bit of that early in the movie where Picard and Worf have to subdue Data (who is quickly repaired and exonerated.) I seem to recall the producers reasoning that it would be unfair to audiences to have them wait two or three years to see their favorite character again only to have them be someone else for most of the movie. Apparently at one point, there was a different story in development for a movie where Picard is kidnapped and replaced by an alien imposter which was dropped for the same reason.

I'm really glad they didn't go with Star Trek: Vengeance, which was apparently considered. That name makes it sound like the fifth TNG movie.

Why? What does "Federation" have to do with the plot?I'm really glad they didn't go with Star Trek: Vengeance, which was apparently considered. That name makes it sound like the fifth TNG movie.

I agree Vengeance would have been really cliche. I will have preferred. Star Trek: Federation.

"Star Trek: Federation" would be more appropriate as the collective title of a series of Trek novels set in Jonathan Archer's time, post-Enterprise.
I think the movie just needed to be a bit more 'darker' to be named appropriately IMO.
I think a truly 'dark' movie would have the heroes forced into dark acts. Kirk avoided it by sparing Khan initially so it wasn't quite right.
The same goes with INS - it wasn't enough of an Insurrection IMO. The Undiscovered Country wasn't enough of a journey into death either. I'm not thinking Shinzon was much of a NEMESIS and what generstions were there in GENERATIONS?
Overall the names don't have to be accurate but cool enough to bring in an audience.
I'd been thinking of concluding that post with a parenthetical " ... if it hasn't been used already," but ended up leaving it out. Oh, well. Not a thing. Why? What does "Federation" have to do with the plot?

Or it would be had it not already been used as the title of a novel twenty years ago.
Having "First Contact" as an episode title didn't stop them from recycling it for a film. Nor did the fact "Final Frontier" was the title of a novel stop them from using it as a film title a year later. Not a thing. Why? What does "Federation" have to do with the plot?

It's a great, simple title. Into Darkness not only refers to how paranoia can
drive people to take "necessary evils" to the evil extremes, but also refers to Kirk's character arc, whereby he is tempted to go to dark places for reasons of revenge. Kirk's gung-ho to kill Harrison/Khan until Spock's admonitions make him think twice, for instance.
Perhaps to some... but would "Star Trek Rebellion" have been less so?It's a great, simple title. Into Darkness not only refers to how paranoia can

no offense but that sounds kind of cliche.

Personally my least favourite is 'The Final Frontier'. There's just something I find lazy about it. A bit like calling a James Bond movie 'Licence To Kill'. You just think, "Yeah, they didn't take longer than a minute to think up that title!"
