The best and most important thing Brannon Braga ever did for Star Trek was not being involved with DS9. Okay, kind of harsh, maybe a bit of an exaggeration. Sorry, Brannon, wherever you are.
But even when it had elements of "parody" in the first season, there were still a number of episodes that were more 90s Trek than anything we'd seen in a long time.
As far as I could tell, that was the whole point of the show: Berman Trek nostalgia with dick jokes. Aside from the humour, many episodes of The Orville could be rewritten to be one of those standalone, more or less forgettable episodes that TNG and Voyager churned out dozens of. But it's not 1992, it's 2022. I'm much more interested in seeing a new episode of Discovery or Prodigy than I am in reliving a Saturday night watching "Rascals" or "Aquiel."
