THE ORVILLE S2, E8: "IDENTITY, PART I"

BTW, this week we found out that the Union is roughly twice the size of Trek's Federation - about 300 worlds to the Fed's roughly 150.

That was a nice tidbit. Now, Trek and Orville fans can debate who would win if the Union and the Federation went to war against each other. ;)

OK. I'm down with it. First need to resolve several questions. Mostly of all, what is the relation of the two Earths?

Are they mirror evolution Earths, like the one in Miri, requiring space travel to meet for the two to meet, and if so how far are they located? Can we pull “The Enterprise Incident” move posing as humans on a Union ship to steal their Quantum drive? And do the Kaylons pose a threat to the Federation? If they are far outside Union space, could they be near Federation space? Does Section 31 know about their existence, and is their attack on Union Earth a result of Section 31 meddling on Kaylon? Will Janeway provide technology to the Borg to defeat the Kaylons, or to the Kaylons to defeat the Borg?

Or are they parallel universes, like the MU, requiring an ion storm during transport to travel to? If so, does the lack of transporters in the Union, leave all the Federation crew who travelled there stranded? And is then Isaac like an evil MU Data? Did the Borg open a tunnel between the universes to assimilate the Kaylon, or did the Kaylons open it to eradicate the Borg because they were organic and not worth preserving? Will Janeway provide technology to the Borg to defeat the Kaylons, or to the Kaylons to defeat the Borg?

Or are they alternative timelines, whereas only one can exist, and the Union have Guinan tell them the timeline is all wrong? Can the Federation from the non-existent timeline bring itself into existence if the non-existent Janeway steals Annorax's ship and erases the Kaylon from the timeline? If so, are the Red Bursts her time incursions, and the Red Angel actually Captain Braxton trying to fix her damage, and was he falsely accused? Can Braxton ever meet Pria? And if Janeway fails, and the Union timeline solidifies, will Data's head still be buried under San Francisco, and can it be used to reprogram Isaac back into being good?

Oh, and if Section 31 takes control over the Discovery, and uses the spore drive to travel to a galaxy far far away to solicit the help of the First Order to defeat the Union, does the Union's black ops unit then recruit Thanos?

The Federation easily boards Union vessels: not only doesn't the Orville have transporters, they don't even lock their doors.

That's what they reported as their total numbers as of August.

One assumes that's an average or something - if they really do lose subscribers during the periods when they're not showing new STD episodes as some folks say is true, then the numbers would bounce around.

Their average viewer age is 43, a bit long in the tooth for streaming, I'd think - but then, they're mainly streaming CBS shows, so what would you expect?

You’re trying to convince your parents or Gaurdians to cut the cord to save money, they might just do that. Also I would think shows like Survivor and Big Brother might skew younger. Hell one email I get from CBS every week has to do with Big Brother.

Definitely the best episode they've done this season. That said, I can't get excited because it'll end up like TNG and either Isacc will do something - and in the last 5 minutes of next week's episode; the Cylon...er Kaylon invasion will be stopped cold (Hell, might even get the Krill involved.)

And yeas, I know, it's the journey, not the resolution (as we all know everything will be wrapped up nice and neat); but IDK as I figured they'd do something like this at some point.

I guess what I don't get is why the Kaylons are keeping the majority of the crew alive. I guess they really believe the Union is dumb enough to trade it's survival for one 'hero ship' crew; or the Kaylons are goinng to try a 'fake out' with Mecer explaining why The Orville is at the of a crapload of what will appear (like they did when the orville scanned them on the surface) tobe (and are) particle weapons.

I give this one a 9/10 for overall execution; and I do kind of like that the Kaylons are so confident (as they should be) of success regardless, they didn't care what the Orville found out, because it would make no difference to their ultimate plan/goal.

Buut as for the gasp/wow factor - IDK for me, this has been done to death so much bettween Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Styargate SG-1, et. al. - and they are following a TNG style version to a tee here - I honestly figured it was going to be a "Kill all organics" story from the point the Kaylons said "His mission is completed..."

And no, I'm not signling out "The Orville" here per se - but yeah, for me the Star trek style "Machines conquer kill all Humans" stories lost me after BoBW II.

I just really hope we don't get a comedic version of Ed Mecer "Kirking" an A.I. as the ultimate resolution. I'm sure Orville fans would love it, but it'll elicit a groan from me if that's the case. I also hope we get at least one Union Fleet VS Kaylons (with the obligitory Union Fleet wiped out, so I can at least get a dose of Starship porn out of all this.)

IDK as I lost one of my favorite characters in Alara; and Isacc and the Doctor were the only two left I really liked; I do hope somehow they manage tro redeem Issac in all this (Yeah, who knows, maybe they'll do the old: 'I do have feelings for you Doctor, in my own way...therefore AI will save your race and betrey my people...' trope.)

Again, 9/10 and I'm actually wanting to see which way the Union gets saved, so for the first time, I'm looking forward to an Orville episode. ;)

I wonder why the planetary Kaylons had any eyes at all. We learned during the Mr Potatohead incident that his eyes were non functional decorations just to give Humans something to look at when interacting with him...

Loved the episode. It reminded me of cross between "Best of Both Worlds" and "Star Wars." The Issac/Claire realtionship is slowly becoming the best part of the show. I also expect some kind of personality reset but I can see them going the romantic way were a spark of emotion happens in Issac that makes him change his way. Maybe we will start seeing a Issac with emotions and do something TNG never did with Data and that is alter the character and create some real character growth. Instead of exploring things like Data you instead have him exploring his new emotions that he doesn't understand.

I do expect to see some other stuff next week. A bunch of new types of Union Ships we haven't seen before and a Wolf 359 type of space battle. We might even get a more detailed look at Earth which we really haven't seen that much of except from the pilot.

He couldn't tell his friends at the time, a year go, that the two saucer lights on his head are targeting scopes for his retracted head cannons.

Have they done the lost Earth colony episode yet? And if not, what's holding that one up?

They all seem to be patterned after their ancestors, who were made to look like - and presumably interact with - the biologicals who built them.

However the Union does have weaponized porn viruses.

Advantage: Union.

Now they'll never get Picard out of that damned Dixon Hill thing...

Whoopi Goldberg needs to guest on this show, playing a bartender that someone refers to as "G".

I know this show likes to leave things a little messier than Trek, but the thing is, something has got to be laying in wait, for a twist that brings Isaac back into the fold. From a narrative point of view, it doesn't make sense for Isaac to now make a claim of finding no value in humanoid life forms, when only 2 episodes ago, he literally went to unimaginable lengths to make amends with Claire, as he himself didn't want to jeopardize relations with her, because he legitimately determined her to be of value to his existence

So I expect some kind of reset, & as long as it is done well, & believably, I'm ok with that. I mean shit. I watch Star Trek. I'd have to be

Um, just watched last night's Orville, "Identity, Part 1". Wow. I haven't had that feeling in a long time. It's only been like this twice before with Star Trek, once in 1990 and once in 1997. That's all I'm going to say about that. Also, I called it. I called it from the first episode. I've never been so unhappy to be right. Best episode ever.

No, I liked every week's Orville better.

When watching it was an mostly afterthought, and an accident.

And I prepared for Discovery, even avoiding the forum and leaving work early.
Fine, then you liked every episode better but again, so what? It's not a competition, wether The Orville is better or worse doesn't affect Discovery in any way and vice versa.

Damn, this episode took a turn! No wonder it's a two-parter! Next, I bet Isaac will realize that because he's spent more time with humans while the rest of the Kaylons have stayed on their home planet, that he isn't like them at all. But anyway, this is why I watch The Orville. Awesome stuff :)

Btw, at the party, I don't know if anyone caught this, but Isaac's speech was Sally Field's Oscar acceptance speech from 1984. Interesting detail seeing as Mercer told Isaac to scan his databanks for speeches. :D And nice for the episode to air just before the Oscars air! Coincidence?
