THE ORVILLE S2, E7: "DEFLECTORS"

^To be fair, Kelly didn't actually ask Ed to do anything.

She shouldn't have to. A guy on his ship is harassing a member of his crew, constantly sending her texts she's not responding to and sending sapient plant-creatures/horrors into her office/quarters. His behavior was out of line and should've been called out, it was bordering on stalker levels.

Just have missed the enterprise reference due to my wife talking over.the show.at points.

What was it

When she re-enters the [holodeck] and finds the engineer guy missing Not!Alara asks the computer to replay the program from "time index 17:01..."

Frankly I'd be pissed if I didn't ask someone for help because I was confident I could deal with something on my own, and a friend took it upon themselves to "help".

And yes, this has happened to me. Oh, my friends are ever-so-"helpful" sometimes...

Kelly isn't a damsel-in-distress.

What an episode! This one was completely serious this week, and the level of tension created between the characters was almost uncomfortable for me to watch. In fact, there were times when it was uncomfortable. This was an excellent episode full of drama, personal conflict, and a solid message on bigotry and how it destroys people's lives. It also shows us, once again, that Bortus has not healed from what was done to his daughter. That moment where Bortus nearly loses his control was excellent.

Two top tier episodes in a row from The Orville.

Another great episode. I hope Bortus is done with Klyden, who is such a hypocrite. He was born female and he’s passing judgement on Lokar.

Also early in the episode, did anyone else catch Kelly calling Talia “Alara”? Who by the way I’ve been referring to as “NotAlara” because up until this point I didn’t know her name.

I was unphased after seeing the previous episode featuring Dr. Finn and Isaac entering a relationship. Yeah, it was cute and would've been more appropriate for Valentine's Day, but I'm not a romantic type.

Tonight's episode again focused on Moclan cultural norms and values. This is what I like about The Orville (and what I loved about Trek shows in general). Yes, it's partly comedy and is meant to be entertaining. The stories are often about humanity and the human condition, whether it's about ending a relationship or facing dishonor and judgment amidst the revelation of one's true self. But it didn't have to end the way it did. Locar could have sought asylum aboard the ship rather than face condemnation, but it was his choice not to hide whom he was anymore, and tradition seemed more important than freedom or happiness.

I also felt sorry for Cassius. He seemed like a really nice guy and a gentleman, but Kelly's decision to end their relationship was understandable in that she didn't want to lead him on, considering marriage or any long-term commitment isn't something she wants right now.

During the first 20 minutes I was dreading this as another relationship Moclan episode. After that, it became one of my favorite episodes of the series. It's probably still not as good as Majority Rule (Which is probably my favorite episode of the show so far) but this was really well written and this is something Trek could not do because of the times it was in. We live in an era where there is more freedom to tell these kind of stories and the emotional baggage that comes with it is pretty intense. I really hope Bortus becomes kind of like Rom in a sense that he is a beacon of social change on Moclus, kind of like the Farengi storyline on DS9.

Very good episode. And was that Bruce Willis doing the voice of that plant creature? It sure sounded like him. Klyden is an ass...no redeeming qualities at all. Bortus should dump his ass.

Well, that episode was depressing as hell. Not in a bad way, since it was well made and compelling, it was just very emotional to watch.

They seem to be angling toward the Moclan either being expelled from the Union or breaking away because their values are not compatible, and I have to say that if they do I agree. There's an argument that you have more influence to act as a force for change within an alliance, but the Union doesn't seem to be applying any pressure to the Moclan in that regard. And at some point it becomes a bit like complicity in their society's many horrific traditions and beliefs.

It's reminiscent of the issues with the Klingon/Federation alliance in TNG and DS9, though in that case there was something of a buffer in that they were simply allies rather than members of the same government, and the alternative would be the Klingons remaining a belligerent power on their borders, and one of relatively equivalent strength. The Moclan are weapon experts, but it's still only one world against the entire Union.

Klyden is a repellent character, and they seem to be building toward Bortus finally overcoming his sense of loyalty to him and concern for Topa having a traditional family life to leave him. Even though it makes for the occasional dramatic plot, I can't stand Klyden and would be happy to see him leave. No knock on Chad Coleman, who is a talented and likeable actor.

Jessica Szohr gave an excellent performance here, and deserves recognition in her own right instead of just being considered Alara's temp replacement, as much as I miss Alara's presence.

The VFX were outstanding as usual, but I really appreciated the shot of the Orville through the gap in the Moclan ship. That was a unique and visually interesting perspective.

Mochlan culture is explained.

They are still following the ethical/legal guidelines set out to keep the species perpetuating before they invented fertility doctors, social welfare nets and refrigeration.

The only reason to keep these rules in place 3 thousand years later, is if they don't have faith in modern technology persisting, or the countries on Mochlan to stay standing.

They are weathering for a new dark age?

After the Mochlans invented ftl and started building extra solar colonies, that dog don't hunt.

Seth is shitting on religion again.

Which came first: the chicken or the egg?

Bortus has the answer: Relationship!

Great episode, on par with 'About the Girl' (my favorite).

It isn't a matter of being helpful, or a "damsel in distress," someone on his ship is behaving out of line.
