THE ORVILLE S2, E6: "A HAPPY REFRAIN"

I actually liked In Theory, but now I can't help but think of it as the inferior version of Happy Refrain.

That's going to be hard now that Data is dead.

I agree. I also liked this episode. But your right in now that it will look inferior to what "Orville" did. Even maybe the best scene with Data acting angry to create a romantic spat looks worst compared to the scene with Issac in his underwear, wife beater shirt and his redneck style lines that are 10 times more funny because of his voice.

On a side note, I noticed how they cleverly sidestepped the question of where Isaac stands on the question of his homeworld joining the Planetary Union. I have this strange feeling that his planet is not contemplating joining the Union but rather whether or not to let it continue to exist-- and that their ultimate judgment will not be favorable.

I really liked this episode as well, but don't have much to add to what has already been said. I do have some thoughts on Isaac.

It is possible that he will continue to develop his programming to become more human, to the point that he will have to make a choice whether to stay with the Union or rejoin his people. I also really like the idea that perhaps his race is considering eradicating humanity and that the data he has been collecting has something to do with this. It is very possible that they become the Dominion or Borg of this series, which would also place Isaac in an Odo style role.

Maybe he's the Dann of his race and they sent him on this mission even though they have no interest in joining the union just to keep him busy and get rid of him.
That would be hilarious. The rest of the Robot People are all dreamy poets or something and Isaac is just defective. :rommie:

That's kind of what I was thinking. The Robot People are the equivalent of Saberhagen's Berskers or Clarke's Monolith aliens, and Isaac's relationship with Claire puts him on the side of the Planetary Union.

The opposite.

The Kaylon must be deciding if the Union is worth invading, and if the Kaylon decide that the Union is beneath their notice, you know "unworthy" then Issac will never see Clair ever again, which is bad.

The only way to keep his girlfriend, is to enslave her species.

It's possible that Kalyon space is so big that some of their neighbours are too far away from each other to talk to about how militant the Kaylon is... Or perhaps they go looking for a fight far from home a lot, so that they have no bad reputation at first, until they start burning worlds. Or it's possible they only go on a warfooting ever thousand years or so.

I thought Yaphit is supposed to play an Odo style role given his shape-shifting abilities ;);):hugegrin:
