THE ORVILLE S2, E2: "PRIMAL URGES"

Why should they do that - they don't on shows like, oh, Star Trek.

Characters in fiction are, by necessity, human. You can give them funny looks, odd customs and even peculiar motivation; they remain human.

No one would watch a fiction TV series that wasn't about people.

You can have truly alien aliens. See Darmok. In those cases the alien functions as a plot device more than a character. But it would be tiresome to do it every week.

^because non-sapient animals aren't capable of producing literature, simulation programs and motion pictures. Moclans are....

Someone chose to give a real world example, so I gave them a real world answer.

Just so you know, Moclans aren't real...

Not at all alien. They wrote a clever communication barrier into the episode, but the aliens were to all appearances motivated and behaved like human beings.

You are being pedantic and silly.

While non-sapient animals (which I suspect what you meant) are incapable of creating some kind of movie or a holoprogram, there are cases where certain species get themselves aroused or engage into some of sexual pleasure behavior solo.

Yes, Moclans aren't real. But thinking an alien species capable of space travel shouldn't be capable of some kind of sexually deviant behavior just because they aren't Human is absurd.

Call it a wild guess but I feel sure at some point humans have been able to sexually stimulate themselves without pornography.
Humans are doing it now. They're doing it in The Orville, and so are the spacefaring Moclans.

This post doesn't make sense, as it doesn't really address the point Amaris was trying to make.

You answered that yourself in post #85

"You can give them funny looks, odd customs and even peculiar motivation"
Sorry, no.

Human beings have varying customs, languages and so on. Doesn't make them alien.

By peculiar motivation, I simply meant what Niven - and Trek tended to do: take some human behavior or characteristic and exaggerate it. Klingons are violent humans. Puppeteers are cowardly humans, etc.
Someone chose to give a real world example, so I gave them a real world answer.

It was a bad answer that didn't address the question.

I think I would have probably liked the episode more if the B-plot about trying to save the survivors on the endangered planet had been the main focus and they'd given less time to Bortus' porn addiction. To be totally honest, the various simulations made me pretty uncomfortable... but if they had to do an episode about porn, maybe it's good that it centered around the lumpy alien's fantasies, because then it's less likely to be accused of being exploitative or titillating at the same time that they're trying to deal with a serious issue (although I'm sure there have to have been some viewers out there who found Bortus' kinky scenarios appealing).

I liked the episode. I was sure this was when we would see Bortus with the mustache because it made me think of a porn stache. I also found it very moving when talked about how he hasn't gotten over whay Kylden did to their child. The porn stuff was fun especially the penis alien who gave him the program but they didn't overdo it and make it full of bad cliche jokes. I still do wonder why the penis alien is working on the ship. You think he would get in just as much trouble as Bortus for giving him the porn video made by his friend.

IDK - the 'porn' he 'downloaded' from a trusted source having a virus is about as cliche as it comes (it's an internet meme that ALL porn downloads contain viruses). :)

I thought the porn fantasies were funny. I agree the B plot should have gotten more screen time, and I think the main obstacle coming from a porn virus was stupid.

Shows like this are considered Space Opera as a nod to 'Soap opera in space'. Maybe we should call Orville a 'Spacecom' instead.

I've already stated my issue was with weak/lazy writing with the use of porn involving very human fantasies. They had the chance to show sexual behaviour in a single gender alien species and also sexually deviant behaviour for that species and there was zero creativity with it.

An example of something which showed some creativity in this area is Trek with the Ferengi and oomox.

You know what I liked?

I liked not having to listen to some goddamned bloodless, ritual debate over the fucking Prime Directive before Mercer and Grayson decided to swoop in and try to rescue those survivors.

That's a kind of masturbation that Star Trek can keep to itself, thank you very much.

Human erogenous zones include areas like the ears. That said, why are Ferengi attracted to human women? That seems a little lazy to have them attracted to humans other humans would find sexually attractive.

I know. Even by McFarlande. DIdn't he do a "Family Guy" episode were the answer was for Peter and others to take their laptops out on the ocean and toss them into the sea!

It makes perfect sense for Ferengi men to want human women that other humans are attracted to. To them those females would hold more value and the Ferengi are after all about acquisition.

Lazy? No. Great well thought out writing I'd say.
