There is a fine line between being influenced and being derivative, and more than half the time Orville falls on the derivative side.
It's entertaining, but only a little entertaining. The most entertaining episode IMO has been their least derivative one, the one with Finn and Isaac stranded on the planet.
Sure, at the end they made it into the Psych test from Coming of Age instead of having it be aliens taking the form of people's fears.
What exactly would be original? What could they really do that Star Trek hasn't done in one of its seven hundred-plus hours? It is a space exploration show, they are going to be covering a lot of the same ground.
All I care about is that the show is massively entertaining with great characters and has heart. It is something that hasn't gotten sucked into the grimdark black hole that even Star Trek couldn't escape.
Except McFarlane didn't write the episode. I think it was a straight up acceptance of the fact that those letters are hard to write. What the hell do you write about someone who died in the line of duty that doesn't sound like the typical boilerplate of dying in the line of duty. How do you personalize it when you don't know the guy well? It's tough.Speaking of writing, Mercer's line about not being a good writer was a clever self-deprecating joke since Seth actually is a great writer in real life.
I felt like this ep. would have been better as an ensemble straight "haunted ship" story, basically a lighter/funnier Event Horizon where everyone was affected by something at the end of the ep. But hey, at least Nurse Park didn't get killed for real. I gave this one a straight C. I will add however, that I thought the shots of the Orville flying through the Plasma Storm looked great.
Ah, that would explain so much! Like, why he's defending this one so steadfastly! You can tell us. What holodeck story did you pitch?
Could we get Discovery to hire The Orville costume designers? And The Orville writers, and the directors...
That's alright. We shouldn't all feel compelled to like the same things. That would be boring too. It's great that there are two very different shows to enjoy.I really wish I could get into Discovery as it is. It is just so freaking dull, from my perspective. I still haven't mustered the motivation to watch episodes eight and nine.
Sooo.... Kitan's race is super-strong and super intelligent..?
They clearly said that her daughter is a little "slow" and they made a comparison with other "deficient people".I got the impression her parents were just a-holes that had spent her life underestimating her because she didn't want to do what they wanted her to do.
Plus which, he made himself the super-scary Big Bad. Do superior AIs exhibit Freudian behavior? So, the whole simulation was designed by Isaac?
This guy scares me. He is so damn efficient in frightening people.

This is wrong. Adding a few lines to a script would not require someone to get a writing credit for the episode. According to the WGA, for a production executive to go to arbitration to earn a writing credit:Except McFarlane didn't write the episode.
