News The Orville: For Star Trek Fans

Speaking as a lifelong Trekkie, I intend to check out both shows, am hoping to enjoy both, and have utterly no interest in using The Orville to bash Discovery, or fretting over which show does or does not respect the True Fans or the sacred "canon" or whatever.

They're TV shows, not rival political parties. Here's hoping they're both worth watching.

I intend to watch (and hopefully enjoy) both as well.

Different people are drawn to different things about Star Trek. There is no single, correct way to enjoy the franchise. I am not offended if the aspect that I enjoy is not on offer in the new show. I have my DVDs when I need to reconnect with that. I am interested in a new, modern vision. Adapt or die.

I agree that The Orville will probably be the poor man's Galaxy Quest, but as long as it can offer me a fun romp with likeable characters and a few laughs I will happily go along for the ride.

I wonder how many people seeing Orville as the "the great Trek hope" spent the last twenty years spitting after saying Brannon Braga's name?
Or MacFarlane's, for that matter.

At least we don't need to stew on it for too long as we'll be seeing them soon. I am curious what both shows will actually be like compared to their trailers.

I fail to see what is the edgy aspect of Discovery that some people keep trying to call out. Is it the overall detail of everything? Is it because the show is using modern film making (Enterprise went off the air in 2005. It is now 2017. A LOT has changed in those years in terms of filming, prop making (3D printers), etc.) and taking into account the show is going to be seen on high definition screens? Is it because they have a much bigger budget compared to past shows and aren't limited by it? What about the show is edgy given we've not seen a single episode?

It can't be because they're showing action in the trailers can it? Something shown in every single Star Trek promo in the past? Something that's been in nearly every episode of Trek since the beginning to one degree or another. I'm genuinely curious what is it that some people see that makes them not just look forward to the Orville over Discovery but also makes them want to constantly attack Discovery, dismiss it, and degrade it?

I do not see that at all on the other side. I do not see people going into Orville twitter threads or forum threads reminding people they're not watching it or they think it looks bad, etc. Yet there is always a group doing that in Discovery content. This is separate from those that might have real and honest concerns about the show but hope it might be good.

That's the biggest confusion I have had. Look forward to the Orville all one wants. I'm going to check out at least the first episode. I doubt I'm going to stick around because I don't like McFarlane's work. Some of Family Guy I find funny but not a lot of it. I can count on one hand how many times and episodes I've actually laughed out loud at when it comes to that show. I can't stand any of his live action stuff. His style, humor, etc just doesn't click with me and it's been that way for years. Yet not once have I felt the need or desire to attack Orville itself. I'm more indifferent to it.

I'll watch the first episode and judge it based upon its merits. If I don't click with it, I'll bail. Too many other things with which I can occupy my time...

I think we're in an ideal situation for Trek fans, we've got The Orville for the old school TNG era Trek style stuff, but then we've also got Discovery, which is giving us a darker, more modern Trek that can stand alonside things like The Walking Dead or The Expanse.

I like this, I hope you're right!

My husband and I were talking about whether this might lead to a state of "Trek Fatigue" (like I experienced at the time of Enterprise). He just laughed and said, "it has been a long time since Trek has been on TV...and, come on, do you not know Star Trek fans?"

I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

Except TNG wasn't a Seth macfarlane comedy. It also wasn't a comedy/parody in general, and Orville really doesn't resemble it outside of the fact that pTNG is one of the shows that Orville is parodying. So, its really not a show that in any way fills the gap of a TNG style Trek show.

Got plans on checking it out to see what it is like. Don't really care about the arguments about between it and Discovery, as they are just TV shows. Both are different.
Same here. The sniping at current Star Trek productions got old real fast with Kelvin universe. I'll never understand the desire to create something out of spite for another product's take.

Except this is not "a Seth McFarlane comedy" and it's not a parody. I've read a couple articles about how the comedy aspects really aren't the main focus of the show, and that it really is a fairly straight sci-fi adventure show that just has some humor in it. One even said that what we see in commercials are pretty much all of the jokes in the pilot.

Well a good start - a few more eps for cast/crew to tighten up, find their legs. Don't think McFarlane will let this ting get too far of base - after al it's a labor of love for him after all.

And I like the jokes.

Haven't seen any penises' yet... watch those hallways! :)

[ Because McFarlane. ]
