The Opening Shot.....

Plumster

Commander
....I was having a crap the other night and while expelling the toxins of the day I was reading Nimoy's bio - 'I am Spock' while sat on the thunder box.

He makes mention of Harve Bennett taking the first days shots of TSFS and seeing if they worked, Bennett reported that the scenes 'cut like butter'. The scene related to Kirks 'log entry' (ha ha in light of above) at the beginning of the movie where he tells the log that 'Enterprise is like a house with all the children gone'.

So - what's the best guess as to what will we see and hear in that first scene?

I want it to open with a grand scene in space and with the USS Kelvin coming into view as it approaches to examine the systems star.

We cut to the Kelvin's bridge and captain Robau sitting in his chair as he says " Mr Kirk, report"

Then the Narada pops up out of nowhere and the shit hits the fan.:p

A while back, I wrote an opening scene for the movie, which I will now re-post.

Exterior: USS Kelvin flying by at warp.

Interior: Kelvin's bridge. Officers at their stations. Captain Robau in the command chair, in the middle of telling a story.

Robau: "...and I told the man painting the registry to the ship that I am the Badass Captain Robau, and if I want my ship to have a four digit registry, it shall. Now paint me a zero. And he did."
Engineer: "But why does the ship only have one nacelle?"
Robau: "The second nacelle would have been installed the following Tuesday. But I am the Badass Captain Robau, and if I want to fly a ship with only one nacelle, then I will. So I launched the ship on Thursday instead. Badass."

A new officer walks out of the turbolift and onto the bridge.

Robau: "Ah, our new XO. Commander...?"
Officer: "Kirk, sir. Commander George Kirk."

Tactical station beeps.

Robau: "Report."
Tactical officer: "Detecting something approaching us. I think it's a ship."
Robau: "You think? On screen."

Exterior shot. Space Octopus flies up behind Kelvin.

Interiror Kelvin bridge.
Captain Robau: "Holy shit!"

Interior Space Octopus bridge. Nero sits in his command throne, holding staff.
Nero: "Kill everything on that ship. Then set a course for Earth."

Yay! Scatological humor! Let me wipe the slate clean and flush the innuendos.

All we really know is the movie is said to open with "heresy," which probably means that there will be a breach of canon that will cause all fans (well, you know whether you'll be one or not) to moan and holler, "Rape," at the screen.
My guess is that less than ten minutes into the movie, Kirk is an orphaned new-born. Fade to Iowa, about 12 years or so later, to see what this heresy has wrought.

'Always look on the bright side of life'.......

So the first line heard in the theatre could actually be a 'fan' screaming 'RAPE'.

Interesting.

Well, other than some of the fans picketing outside the theater merely carrying signs that say JJ raped their childhood. ;)

I have a feeling this movie will have a whiz-bang start, actually. Go straight into the story. Kinda like TUC did. Nothing mystical. No build up. No great amount of exposition.
I also really think Abrams wants the entire theater (not just fans) to think WTF within the first ten minutes.

Abrams said way back that he wanted their to be heoric captains in the movie other than just Kirk. It was in reference to those who say that it has become a bit cliche in Trek that Starfleet seems filled with psychos, traitors, and other types of mal-adjusteds or thugs and plug-uglies.
So, besides Pike, we have Robau. I'd guess, too, that Robau's Kelvin does something to at least partially disable or thwart Nero before it's destroyed. Maybe do something that actually weakened Nero in a way to aid in his defeat later.

I'm guessing this might very well be the first scene...unless Abrams wants to briefly revisit the TNG era/post-NEMESIS time frame for a few minutes to introduce old Spock, Nero and their respective vessels before the 23rd century and Kelvin enter the picture.

^I think someone mentioned older Spock or possibly Nero standing before what looked to be the Senate in the trailer. And we have an image of the Narada partly entering the time rift to the past.

So we're getting a brief 24th century opening. Then maybe a panning shot of the Kelvin, a scene on the bridge before the Narada emerges from the rift dead ahead and all hell breaks loose.

The very first scene I want to see is Riker going into a Holodeck and telling the computer to recreate the attack on the Kelvin, and then that is where the movie starts, full screen.

But then again, hasn't it also been reported that the narration could include different time frames shown via flashbacks? So the fact that we'll see Nero and/or old Spock in the 24th century doesn't mean the movie necessarily has to start with that, doesn't it?

It had been reported early on that the story will unfold in non-linear fashion, so it doesn't necessarily start at the beginning and end at the end, so to speak, and there may be some jumping back and forth, as far as the timeframe being shown is concerned. It was also reported at one time, however, that the movie will begin in the 24th century. So we don't know, really, but the 24th century gets in there somewhere (the bit with Nero in the Klingon prison is believed to belong in that time, as well) and Chemahkuu's proposed scenario could be one way to do it.

M'Sharak...as much as I enjoyed Pulp Fiction.....

Non-linear stuff gives me headaches;)

If this season of LOST is any indication of non-linear story telling....

We're all in for massive headaches ;)

I think the film should start with Badass Captain Robau killing 2 million Klingon warriors with his bare hands.

It's an easy thing to make a confusing mess out of it, no question, but with a little restraint, it can also be done well. I'll have to see how it's handled here.
