Surprised none of the many review sites picked up on this audio problem (or at least made a big deal out of it). I wonder if they got special preview copies that didn't have this problem or something....
Yes, that thought had ocurred to me also. So far as I'm aware - nary a single review has so much as mentioned the errors. My favourite site for Blu-ray reviews, High Def Digest, even talked about the dialogue being front and centre in their appraisal!

Everyone probably thought Farpoint had just been ported over from the sampler and didn't even look at it. I had asked about and Mike Okuda responded that there were no changes in the episode on the season one set.

What did change was the authoring of the disks. It's likely the same contents, but CBS decided to do the season sets in-house, unlike the sampler which they gave to another company. They're authoring must have been flawed, even thought the source files are the same.

But most reviewers probably weren't aware of that change. :techman:

Disc just arrived! Wooooo!

First impressions is that it's a nice look, slim, case. But I agree with some others, the chapter/episode listings really should be on a sleeve or insert or something (a slightly thicker case with another "page" for the disc holders would've freed up room to allow for the episode listings and the Enterprise beauty shot.) But, fuck it, TNG on Blu-Ray!!!!

We should also consider that the model may no longer be in the pristine condition from the pilot. I can clearly see dirt marks on the bottom of the saucer!

I think what may be going on there... and why the ship looks so peculiar in this shot... is that a common miniature photography trick is to dull the model with powder to eliminate either unwanted highlights or reflections of the blue/green screen being used. ILM did this a lot, and is why the iridescent paint job on the 1701 refit in Star Trek III looks so dull and flat.

There's a doc on the STIII Blu-ray that brings this up, I believe.

I encountered some audio issues as well, changing the audio track with the DVD remote "seemed" to fix it. I'm listening through a simulated 5.1 soundbar and in a couple of episodes the audio was very "mono"-sounding as if only coming through one speaker. Pressing the "Audio" button on my remote changed the selection to what it called the "French" selection but the audio instead came through as English only know sounding as if properly coming through the speaker. The other languages seemed to match the title in the HUD of the player, and there was a second "French" selection that also seemed to match. (Near as I can tell at recognizing these various languages.)

So there might be an issue there. Which this is one thing that bugs me about this set, and it goes with pretty much all of Blu-Rays Paramount/CBS has produced is in having to select a language when putting the disc in.

The HUD on the main menu is also terribly plain.

When you shift audio tracks with the remote, do you see the second English audio track? It sounds like your player isn't displaying the correct label on the stereo English track, and is instead labeling it as French.

On "Encounter" and "Naked Now" both English tracks are labeled as such on my player. Do you see the second "French" track on either of those? If not, which episode?

I'll go back and check through it tomorrow. The episode I was watching with the audio problems were "Hide and Q" and "Haven" (I skipped Hide and Q, got to Haven and realized the problem and corrected it before skipping to the next episode.)

Like I said, in those episode the audio was very mono and only seemed to be coming from the center speaker in my soundbar, pressing the "audio" button my remote cycled through the channels, the 2nd channel labeled as "French" was actually a second English channel, this one in stereo.

I'll check it again tomorrow, I'm watching through the special features right now before going to bed. But if you're having audio problems, probably try changing the audio/language channel of your remote.

The plot thickens. Here's the list I've compiled of where dialogue can be heard in the mix (please correct me if I've made a mistake):

"The Last Outpost" - C
"Where No One Has Gone Before" - C

I'll just note that I didn't bother putting my ear next to any of the rear channels to check. The only real troublesome one is the pilot because it is unbalanced and because it differs from the Next Level sampler... but the others in the middle there are strange anomalies as well.

How could they have screwed this up so bad? Unless there was such a rush to get this out, there was no one there to listen to the audio. I'm not going to name names, since I dont know who exactly is at fault, but they show one of the audio engineers in a control booth, in one of the extras. He was doing the mixing. Did they not have anyone else listen and verify the mixes? I mean really, the equipment and editing software should visually show the engineer what tracks include the dialogue.

They do have seperate audio track recordings for the dialogue only, right? It's not like when stereo was first introduced, where they included a mix on the right channel, which could also be listened to correctly with a mono speaker.

From that list, it appears they will have to replace 5 discs in the set. Shouldnt cost them much, since the discs were made in Mexico. Hopefully they will do something, otherwise they will have some angry fans.

Yeah, the discs were made in Mexico. Sad that they would go to the trouble of all the remastering and then let them be made there.

All jokes aside, it doesn't really matter where they were made... it matters where and by whom it was authored... and if they had proper QC at that stage, before it was sent out to be mass duplicated and packaged.

^^ It wasn't a joke. Products made in Mexico are cheaps41t, moreso than China or Taiwan.

Again, this problem did not occur at the mass replication and packaging stage.

Are you 100% sure on that? Couldn't it have been at any point?

How does one go about getting replacements? I've never had to do so before.

Because it's a problem with the sound mix... and that happened here in Los Angeles. As for a replacement, just sit tight and keep an eye out here, blu-ray.com or thedigitalbits.com for further info if a replacement program is started.

Essentially what happens is, you mail only the affected discs in a bubble envelope with your return info to an address that CBS will make known and in about 4-6 weeks (sometimes less), you get the corrected replacement disc(s).

So, I'm definitely hearing an echo on "Haven". Anyone else? It starts at 27:27 when Troi meets Riker on the holodeck and continues until the end of the episode. It's probably occurring because the dialogue in the left and right channel (which isn't supposed to be there in the first place!) goes out of sync with the center channel.

This is the first episode I've heard it on. Here's a new post at TheDigitalBits:

[Editor's Note: There are some reports of audio issues with the Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One Blu-ray set - specifically character dialogue being mixed not just in the center but front left and right channels on some episodes. It's not something I noticed initially (as naturally none of the episodes I've watched thus far are among the problematic ones), but we're looking into it and will post an update as soon as possible. FYI, we're told that CBS is already investigating...]

Well, I just watched Encounter at Farpoint (Just using the TV speakers) and I didn't notice anything. Of course you guys said that I probably wouldn't but if they are having a recall, I might take advantage of it.

Still, I admire the work being done to bring us these sets so to see these being called shit in this thread is a little disheartening, even though I understand the reasons.

Who called the Season One set shit? I mean, Ar-Pharazon made some crack about the general quality of products made in Mexico... but I correctly pointed out to him that the problem we're hearing started before disc replication and happened during the sound mix stage in L.A.

Don't worry. Cooler heads will prevail and we'll probably get this all sorted out eventually. Just enjoy it for now. The quality is still great despite these issues. :)
