Also, excuse the double post, but what strikes me as supremely interesting about TNG-R and as a sort of justification for keeping the original shots that hasn't come up in the debate yet: Basically all of the effects-heavy shows we've gotten to enjoy in HD quality yet, say nuBSG or SGU, were produced in the CGI era (or in the case of TOS-R switched to CGI for their HD remastering). TNG is sort of the first time we're getting a show in HD using photographic effects, and being able to draw upon the strength of those techniques. That makes it quite unique and fresh in a way. Despite all the ways the nuBSG effects shots are brilliants - their dynamism, etc. - you won't find a shot in there that is brilliant in the same way that this one is, due to its lighting and texture. To me this is tremendously exciting.

Yeah it really does give the show a unique look now, and almost feels like an opportunity to watch an entire Trek series with those great, movie-era special effects. Since they pretty much appear to be at that level now.

You know, I think part of the reason I never rewatched TNG is because watching the DVDs never seemed to match up with how it looks in my head. With the Blu-Ray release it is finally matching what I see in my head!

I can't wait to get the first season. I haven't been this excited about Star Trek since I got TVH for Christmas back in 86 and saw the TNG teaser at the beginning!

I cant imagine not having watched STNG in all these years.

^I've tried in recent years but I just couldn't get past the video quality. I think the last time I re-watched any of the episodes was in the mid-nineties.

Needless to say I am stoked to be re-watching the series again. Even my wife wants to watch it with me!

Of course, it helps that I never got TNG on DVD to begin with, so it's not like I'm gonna be dealing with two sets of the same show...

That's my problem too. I tried watching TNG on my 47 inch LCD TV streamed through Netflix, and it looks like absolute crap. TOS-R, on the other hand, looks fantastic.

Yeah... I streamed episodes from my HDD to my 40 inch LCD and it was pretty bad. Season 1-3 episodes were the worst.

Something I noticed before, you can actually see the edges of a mask which was placed directly into the hood of the camera's mattebox (in front of the lens -- usually to prevent lens flares from studio lights) in the screenshot comparison above (mostly in the upper right, but also partially in the upper left... more evidence that in certain shots there is no more usable image beyond the TV area on the film because it's being masked out in-camera, just as Okuda mentioned. See below:

Looking at TrekCore, I was hoping to see an umbilical shot. Sure enough there was one. I can't believe the amount of detail AND that you can make out the people walking through. Not some blobs that I thought were a little cartoonish when this episode aired.

Goes to show ya, not only is Andrew Probert a genius, but also -- since he reportedly HATED the idea of the Enterprise-D docking inside the spacedock / starbase for this episode -- a consummate professional. His departure after S1 was a huge loss for the show.

Bravo, how did you fill in the missing picture info? Guessing you possibly used the photograph from drexfiles somehow, although it doesn't have a particularly high-res even at full size.
